Even harmonic pulse train generation by cross-polarization-modulation seeded instability in optical fibers

2012

International audience; We show that, by properly adjusting the relative state of polarization of the pump and of a weak modulation, with a frequency such that at least one of its even harmonics falls within the band of modulation instability, one obtains a fully modulated wave at the second or higher even harmonic of the initial modulation. An application of this principle to the generation of a 80-GHz optical pulse train with high extinction ratio from a 40-GHz weakly modulated pump is experimentally demonstrated using a nonzero dispersion shifted fiber in the telecom C band.

PRELIMINARY ANALYSES FROM A HOSPITAL BASED STUDY ON 3154 WESTERN SICILIAN PATIENTS WITH ORAL MUCOSAL LESIONS

2010

Objectives: Diagnosis of the wide variety of lesions that occur in the oral cavity is an essential part of dental practice. The objective of this study was to explore the demographic and behavioural profiles of patients affected by oral cavity diseases on a wide spectrum. Methods: Demographic and behavioural data of 3154 patients with at least one oral cavity disease among those consecutively visited between 2004 and 2009 at the Unit of Oral Medicine, were recorded: gender, age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, drugs use. Analysis was restricted to the eleven more frequent oral cavity diseases. Firstly, Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was applied as a descriptive tool to geometri…

The variance of the ℓnp-norm of the Gaussian vector, and Dvoretzky's theorem

2018

Let n be a large integer, and let G be the standard Gaussian vector in Rn. Paouris, Valettas and Zinn (2015) showed that for all p∈[1,clogn], the variance of the ℓnp-norm of G is equivalent, up to a constant multiple, to 2ppn2/p−1, and for p∈[Clogn,∞], to (logn)−1. Here, C,c>0 are universal constants. That result left open the question of estimating the variance for p logarithmic in n. In this paper, the question is resolved by providing a complete characterization of Var∥G∥p for all p. It is shown that there exist two transition points (windows) in which the behavior of Var∥G∥p changes significantly. Some implications of the results are discussed in the context of random Dvoretzky's theore…

A spatial origin‐destination approach for the analysis of local tourism demand in Italy

2023

The article assesses the competitiveness of tourist destinations, while accounting for spatial features of tourism and information on both the origin and the destination of tourists. Using a dynamic spatial panel data model with common factors within the origin-destination framework, it explores unilateral inbound tourism flows in 110 Italian regions from 23 European origin countries over the period 2004-2017. The estimation and test results confirm the need to consider this advanced spatial econometric model. In an empirical application measuring tourism resilience of regions based on this model, the results demonstrate the importance of promoting coordinated actions between neighbouring d…

Pulsating B and Be stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud

2008

Context: Stellar pulsations in main-sequence B-type stars are driven by the kappa-mechanism due to the Fe-group opacity bump. The current models do not predict the presence of instability strips in the B spectral domain at very low metallicities. As the metallicity of the SMC is lower than Z=0.005, it constitutes a very suitable object to test these predictions. Aims: The main objective is to investigate the existence of B-type pulsators at low metallicities, searching for short-term periodic variability in absorption-line B and Be stars in the SMC. The analysis has been performed in a sample of 313 B and Be stars with fundamental astrophysical parameters accurately determined from high-res…

Limiting Carleman weights and conformally transversally anisotropic manifolds

2020

We analyze the structure of the set of limiting Carleman weights in all conformally flat manifolds, 3 3 -manifolds, and 4 4 -manifolds. In particular we give a new proof of the classification of Euclidean limiting Carleman weights, and show that there are only three basic such weights up to the action of the conformal group. In dimension three we show that if the manifold is not conformally flat, there could be one or two limiting Carleman weights. We also characterize the metrics that have more than one limiting Carleman weight. In dimension four we obtain a complete spectrum of examples according to the structure of the Weyl tensor. In particular, we construct unimodular Lie groups whose …

Asymptotic Lipschitz regularity for tug-of-war games with varying probabilities

2018

We prove an asymptotic Lipschitz estimate for value functions of tug-of-war games with varying probabilities defined in $\Omega\subset \mathbb R^n$. The method of the proof is based on a game-theoretic idea to estimate the value of a related game defined in $\Omega\times \Omega$ via couplings.

On the regularity of very weak solutions for linear elliptic equations in divergence form

2020

AbstractIn this paper we consider a linear elliptic equation in divergence form $$\begin{aligned} \sum _{i,j}D_j(a_{ij}(x)D_i u )=0 \quad \hbox {in } \Omega . \end{aligned}$$ ∑ i , j D j ( a ij ( x ) D i u ) = 0 in Ω . Assuming the coefficients $$a_{ij}$$ a ij in $$W^{1,n}(\Omega )$$ W 1 , n ( Ω ) with a modulus of continuity satisfying a certain Dini-type continuity condition, we prove that any very weak solution $$u\in L^{n'}_\mathrm{loc}(\Omega )$$ u ∈ L loc n ′ ( Ω ) of (0.1) is actually a weak solution in $$W^{1,2}_\mathrm{loc}(\Omega )$$ W loc 1 , 2 ( Ω ) .

The Calderón problem for the conformal Laplacian

2022

We consider a conformally invariant version of the Calderón problem, where the objective is to determine the conformal class of a Riemannian manifold with boundary from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the conformal Laplacian. The main result states that a locally conformally real-analytic manifold in dimensions can be determined in this way, giving a positive answer to an earlier conjecture [LU02, Conjecture 6.3]. The proof proceeds as in the standard Calderón problem on a real-analytic Riemannian manifold, but new features appear due to the conformal structure. In particular, we introduce a new coordinate system that replaces harmonic coordinates when determining the conformal class in a …
