Application of replicated difference testing
2000
International audience; In a recent paper, Brockho and Schlich (1998, Handling replications in discrimination tests. Food Quality and Preference, 9(5), 303±312) proposed a statistically sound way of handling replications in dierence testing. In the present paper, this new test is applied to the data obtained in six experiments on non alcoholic beverages, where triangle tests were intensively replicated (between eight and 60 times) with groups of subjects composed of 12±61 students. The paper aims to estimate in these practical situations the extent to which a group of panelists is heterogeneous towards the ability of detecting a sensory dierence among two products. As the results indicat…
The significance of climate variability on early modern European grain prices
2021
AbstractGrain was the most important food source in early modern Europe (c. 1500–1800), and its price influenced the entire economy. The extent to which climate variability determined grain price variations remains contested, and claims of solar cycle influences on prices are disputed. We thoroughly reassess these questions, within a framework of comprehensive statistical analysis, by employing an unprecedentedly large grain price data set together with state-of-the-art palaeoclimate reconstructions and long meteorological series. A highly significant negative grain price–temperature relationship (i.e. colder = high prices and vice versa) is found across Europe. This association increases a…
Relationship between the acid and limonin content of Washington Navel orange juices
1985
Juice samples of Washington Navel oranges from three groves were analysed for limonin, °Brix and acid during several seasons. A strong correlation between limonin and acid content has been found.
Sister-chromatid exchange in cultured lymphocytes of ewes and their newborn lambs
1984
The incidence of sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) in cultured lymphocytes of ewes and their newborn lambs was determined using the BrdU-Giemsa technique. In all ewe-lamb pairs, the SCE rate in the lambs was less than that of the ewes. The mean SCE frequencies per chromosome of the ewes after lambing and of the newborn lambs were 0.1909 and 0.1581, respectively. The statistical analysis shows that a significant difference exists between SCE in the adult female sheep and their lambs. At the same time, a negative correlation was observed between SCE rate and cell proliferation. The results of this study are compared with those of previous reports on age-dependency of SCE.
Effect of vitrification on human oocytes: a metabolic profiling study.
2013
Objective To evaluate the effect of oocyte vitrification in the metabolomic profile of embryos developed from vitrified and fresh oocytes in our ovum donation program. Design Analysis of the metabolic profiles of spent culture medium samples corresponding to embryos developed from vitrified and fresh oocytes. Setting In vitro fertilization (IVF) unit/metabolomic facility. Patient(s) Oocyte donors between the ages of 18 and 35 years. Intervention(s) Metabolomic profile liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) of spent media samples. Main Outcome Measure(s) Identification of spent media components and metabolites present and absent in vitrified and fresh day-3 embryos. Res…
Gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI of transient hepatic enhancement differences: Another cause of hypointense observation on hepatobiliary phase
2018
Purpose: To retrospectively determine the frequency, natural history and factors associated with the presence of transient hepatic enhancement difference showing hypointensity on hepatobiliary phase images of gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI. Materials and methods: Gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI of 125 patients (91 men; 34 women) with transient hepatic enhancement difference were retrospectively reviewed. Three readers qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated MR imaging features and evolution at follow up. The Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test and Kruskall-Wallis rank test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Transient hepatic enhancement difference were hypointense on hepatobiliary ph…
How angioarchitecture of cerebral arteriovenous malformations should influence the therapeutic considerations.
1995
PURPOSE To evaluate the angioarchitectural criteria of complex cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), concerning the risk of hemorrhage and therapy planing. METHODS The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and neuroangiographic findings of 227 AVMs (223 patients) were retrospectively evaluated. Statistical analysis was used to define the relative frequency of these lesions for hemorrhage in correlation with various parameters (i.e. age of the patient, size, location, associated aneurysms). RESULTS Onset of symptoms was between 21 and 40 years of age in 50% of cases. The ratio of centrally to convexially located lesions was 1:2. Convexial AVMs are classified by MR imaging into sulcal and gy…
Reliability and validity of the Digigraph 100 in orthodontic diagnosis.
2001
Cephalometric analyses of lateral cephalograms allow important statements to be made on diagnosis and treatment planning. Such radiographs should, however, be taken with a considerable reduction in radiation exposure. With the Digigraph 100 (Dolphin Imaging Systems Inc., USA) a cephalometric technique based on distance measurements of emitted sonic signals is now available. This study was aimed at determining the degree to which this procedure can cope with the requirements of reliability and validity in the field of orthodontics. For this purpose 50 volunteers were examined by conventional cephalometry with manual tracing of lateral cephalograms as well as by sonic cephalometry, with Jarab…
Denture-related oral mucosal lesions among farmers in a semi-arid Northeastern region of Brazil
2010
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of denture-related oral mucosal lesions (DML) in São Francisco sertão microregion, in Sergipe State, Northeastern Brazil. Study Design: Data related to gender, age, type of denture, length of denture use, hygiene care, nocturnal denture wear, symptoms, and presence of DML were obtained. Statistical analysis included the Pearson's chi-square and multivariate logistic regression. Results: The global prevalence of DML was 50%, with a significant association between the DML and female gender, age ? 40 years, and length of use ? 5 years. By using the interaction model of logistic regression it was observed that females over 40 …
Oral health-related quality of life in orthodontics: a cross-sectional multicentre study on patients in orthodontic treatment
2019
Summary Objective This study aimed to assess oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in relation to associated covariates in orthodontic patients of different age groups (children, adolescents, and adults) in a cross-sectional study. Methods A total of 898 subjects (50.6% females, 49.4% males; mean age 16.89 years) undergoing orthodontic treatment anonymously completed the German version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-G14) to assess OHRQoL in addition to completing 23 other items. Descriptive, exploratory statistical analysis and multiple linear regression modelling were performed. Results The mean score of the OHIP-G14 was 8.3 for the 6- to 11-year olds, 8.9 for the 12- to 17…
