Diagnosis of damage to Norway spruce (Picea abies) through biochemical criteria

1995

Bioindication can be carried out at different hierarchical levels, eg. cell, organism, and ecosystem. While the monitoring of damage by visible criteria (e.g. loss of needles) is connected with the organism as a whole, the monitoring of damage by biochemical indicators is above all connected with cell metabolism. The degree of vitality of a tree can be ascertained through the integration of a number of biochemical parameters. Furthermore, a differential diagnosis of a particular stress pattern can be carried out because of the feedback pattern of several biochemical indicators. In order to describe and interpret biochemical or physiological changes that have been caused by a number of facto…

Statistical analysis of noise levels in urban areas

1991

Abstract Environmental noise measurements have been carried out during recent years in different cities and locations of Spain. The noise levels have been continuously sampled over 24 h periods using a noise level analyzer. The data contained in this paper represent a total of 4200 measurement hours. All the information has been used to investigate the time patterns of the noise levels under a wide range of different conditions and to study the relationships between several noise descriptors in urban areas.

Statistical analysis of multilayer perceptrons performances

2002

The paper is based on a series of studies on the learning capabilities of multilayered perceptrons (MLP). The complexity of these nonlinear systems can be varied, acting for instance on the number of hidden units, but we will be confronted with a choice dilemma, concerning the optimal complexity of the system for a given problem. By the mean of statistical methods, we have found that the effective number of hidden units is smaller than the potential size; some units have a "binary" activation level or a time constant activation. We also prove that weight initialization to small values is recommended and reduce the effective size of the hidden layer.

On a new robust workflow for the statistical and spatial analysis of fracture data collected with scanlines (or the importance of stationarity)

2020

Abstract. We present an innovative workflow for the statistical analysis of fracture data collected along scanlines, composed of two major stages, each one with alternative options. A prerequisite in our analysis is the assessment of stationarity of the dataset, which is motivated by statistical and geological considerations. Calculating statistics on non-stationary data can be statistically meaningless, and moreover the normalization and/or sub-setting approach that we discuss here can greatly improve our understanding of geological deformation processes. Our methodology is based on performing non-parametric statistical tests, which allow detecting important features of the spatial distrib…

NMR spectroscopy evaluation of direct relationship between soils and molecular composition of red wines from Aglanico grapes

2010

1H NMR spectroscopy was employed to investigate the molecular quality of Aglianico red wines from the Campania region of Italy. The wines were obtained from three different Aglianico vineyards characterized by different microclimatic and pedological properties. In order to reach an objective evaluation of “terroir” influence on wine quality, grapes were subjected to the same winemaking procedures. The careful subtraction of water and ethanol signals from NMR spectra allowed to statistically recognize the metabolites to be employed in multivariate statistical methods: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Discriminant Analysis (DA) and Hierarchical Clustering Analysis (HCA). The three wines we…

Methodologies for the Statistical Analysis of Memory Response to Radiation

2016

International audience; Methodologies are proposed for in-depth statistical analysis of Single Event Upset data. The motivation for using these methodologies is to obtain precise information on the intrinsic defects and weaknesses of the tested devices, and to gain insight on their failure mechanisms, at no additional cost. The case study is a 65 nm SRAM irradiated with neutrons, protons and heavy ions. This publication is an extended version of a previous study.

Correlation between classical prognostic factors and overexpression of HER2 and HER3 in localized gastric cancer

2012

e14589 Background: Although HER2 overexpression has been identified as a predictive factor for targeted therapy in advanced gastric cancer (GC), little is known about its role in localized GC. Recent studies suggest that not only HER2 but also HER3 might have a role in prognosis in GC. Our study aimed to identify the prevalence of HER2 and HER3 overexpression in a series of localized GC and to describe correlations of these with traditional prognostic factors Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of HER2 and HER3 overexpression in archived tumour samples in pts diagnosed with GC at stage I-III. HER2 was assessed with herceptest, (negative if 0 or 1+, or positive with 2+ or 3+). St…

Comparison of E-Trust and Trust Concepts in Online and Offline Dimensions

2017

Abstract In everyday lives, we more and more use different technology products to make our lives easier and faster. We often do not realise that we are switching our lifestyles to the online platform - we do everything mostly online - meet and communicate with others, watch videos and listen to favourite songs, choose and buy different things. The main question is - can we trust everything that we see on the screen? Is the explanation of “trust” the same in real life and in online sphere? Authors of the paper compare the concept of “trust” in offline trade market with that in online trading. The following methods were used - literature study and analysis, consumer survey and statistical ana…

Statistical analysis when dealing with astigmatism: assessment of different spherocylindrical notations.

2001

Ophthalmic epidemiological studies frequently deal with ocular refractive errors, which are commonly expressed in the form sphere/cylinder x axis. However, this representation has been shown not to be the most suitable one for performing statistical analysis. Although alternative analytical and graphic methods to represent this kind of data have been developed, these formalisms have often gone unnoticed by researchers, despite their usefulness and versatility. Besides, there has been no discussion of how each of them fits in with a particular type of study. In this paper, several mathematical representations of dioptric power are revisited in a comprehensive way. The aim is to encourage res…
