Fitting linear models and generalized linear models with large data sets in R

We present an estimating algorithm to fit linear and generalized linear models not involving the QR decomposition. Some new R functions are presented and discussed. For large data sets, comparisons with respect to the well-known lm() and glm(), as well as to biglm() and bigglm() from the package biglm, show that the proposed functions speed up computation while preserving numerical stability and accuracy

Regularization operators for natural images based on nonlinear perception models.

Image restoration requires some a priori knowledge of the solution. Some of the conventional regularization techniques are based on the estimation of the power spectrum density. Simple statistical models for spectral estimation just take into account second-order relations between the pixels of the image. However, natural images exhibit additional features, such as particular relationships between local Fourier or wavelet transform coefficients. Quantum mechanical settings inspired by RLC circuits

In some recent papers several authors used electronic circuits to construct loss and gain systems. This is particularly interesting in the context of PT-quantum mechanics, where this kind of effects appears quite naturally. The electronic circuits used so far are simple, but not so much. Surprisingly enough, a rather trivial RLC circuit can be analyzed with the same perspective and it produces a variety of unexpected results, both from a mathematical and on a physical side. We present a study of the dimensionality and factorial invariance of religiosity for 26 countries with a Christian heritage, based on the 1998 and 2008 rounds of the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) Religion survey, using both exploratory and multi-group confirmatory factor analyses. The results of the exploratory factor analysis showed that three factors, common to Christian and religiously unaffiliated respondents, could be extracted from our initially selected items and suggested the testing of four different three-factor models using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. The repeatability and reproducibility of calibrating signals generated by Hsu-Nielsen method

During the measurements of the acoustic emission signals taken both in the laboratory and industrial conditions it is necessary to carry out calibration of the measurement paths used. One of the basic calibration methods is the one invented by Hsu-Nielsen, which consists in generating an acoustic signal during breaking a scriber placed in a special head put on an automatic pencil.
