Sensory analysis of Burgundy Pinot noir wines: A comparison of orthonasal and retronasal profiling
1999
Thirty Burgundy Pinot noir wines were evaluated by quantitative descriptive profile by nose (BN) and by mouth (BM) separately, by a trained panel composed of 12 judges. A specific vocabulary of 20 terms was developed. Sensory results were analyzed and compared by univariate and multivariate statistical techniques. Principal component analyses of the mean ratings BN and BM were fairly comparable regarding correlation among variables and the position of the wines. However, five sensory characteristics seem to be more intensely perceived BM, against 6 BN. Panel discrimination of the wines and panel repeatability in the measure were found to be slightly better BN than BM. A further canonical di…
Fractal dimension versus density of built-up surfaces in the periphery of Brussels
2007
International audience; This paper aims at showing the usefulness of the fractal dimension for characterizing the spatial structure of the built-up surfaces within the periurban fringe. We first discuss our methodology and expectations in terms of operationality of the fractal dimension theoretically and geometrically. An empirical analysis is then performed on the southern periphery of Brussels (Brabant Wallon). The empirical analysis is divided into two parts: first, the effect of the size and shape of the windows on the fractal measures is empirically evaluated; this leads to a methodological discussion about the importance of the scale of analysis as well as the real sense of fractality…
Infected persons by the fact of a public organism : is a fair compensation by the community realistic ? A graph-theory pproach
1999
The paper focuses on indirectly infected persons (persons infected by a person, infected by a person, etc., itself infected by a public organism, for AIDS, hepatitis C, etc.). It is assumed that fairness implies the national community to indemnify them. Graph theory is used to explain what is indirect infection. The concept of chains of infection, and their length is central. Re-infections are considered also because even individuals that are initially infected by another cause could become later indirectly infected by the public agent. The number of persons to be indemnified is larger than for direct infection, so the cost of compensation is higher, unless if compensation per capita is low…

Stability in Parents' Causal Attributions for Their Children's Academic Performance: A Nine-Year Follow-up
2015
This study investigated the interindividual stability and mean-level changes in parents’ causal attributions for their children’s academic performance across a 9-year period from the first year in primary school (Grade 1, age 7) to the end of lower secondary school (Grade 9, age 16). In all, 212 children participated in the study. The results showed that, after we controlled for the children’s level of academic performance, the parents made fairly similar causal attributions when their children were in the ninth grade as they did in the first grade. Changes in the mean-level happened in only external attributions. Further, the differences between mothers and fathers in the stability of thei…
Statistical methods for adaptive river basin management and monitoring
2018
Decision-making at different phases of adaptive river basin management planning rely largely on the information that is gained through environmental monitoring. The aim of this thesis was to develop and test statistical assessment tools presumed to be particularly useful for evaluating existing monitoring designs, converting monitoring data into management information and quantifying uncertainties. River basin scale monitoring was performed using a wireless sensor network and a data quality control system and maintenance effort was assessed. National-scale, traditional monitoring data and linear mixed effect modelling were used to estimate the uncertainty in two status class metrics (total …
Telerilevamento e GIS per la valutazione e il monitoraggio delle isole di calore in ambiente urbano
2017
The techniques of spatial analysis and Remote Sensing represent an useful tool for the knowledge and the study of the Urban Heat Island phenomenon (English acronym UHI). In this study, among the different causes that lead to the generation of the event, those regarding physical features of the surface and the presence of different land use/cover such as: the high cover of urban areas and the lack of green areas have been examined. The Remote Sensing techniques allow to create maps of the land use/cover, then, in order to estimate the different in temperature due to the distance to the vegetation, the temperature of the bodies already tested have been compared with a thermal map. In detail t…
Double-application of platelet-rich plasma on bone healing in rabbits
2010
Objective: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is considered to enhance bone formation especially at early stages of wound healing, depending on the limited and short life-span of platelets and growth factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficacy of double-application of PRP (DA-PRP) on bone healing in a rabbit calvarial defect model. Study design: Twenty-eight rabbits, each had two surgically prepared calvarial bone defects (10mm diameter), were included in this study and randomly divided into six groups. Defects (n=56) were treated with single-application of PRP (SA-PRP)(n=10), SA-PRP and beta-tricalciumphosphate (SA-PRP+TCP)(n=10), DA-PRP (n=8), DA-PRP and beta-tricalciumphosphate (DA-P…
