Host–virus evolutionary dynamics with specialist and generalist infection strategies: Bifurcations, bistability, and chaos

2019

In this work, we have investigated the evolutionary dynamics of a generalist pathogen, e.g., a virus population, that evolves toward specialization in an environment with multiple host types. We have particularly explored under which conditions generalist viral strains may rise in frequency and coexist with specialist strains or even dominate the population. By means of a nonlinear mathematical model and bifurcation analysis, we have determined the theoretical conditions for stability of nine identified equilibria and provided biological interpretation in terms of the infection rates for the viral specialist and generalist strains. By means of a stability diagram, we identified stable fixed…

Desaturase activities are depleted before and after weaning in liver microsomes of spontaneously hypertensive rats

2002

Abstract In the present study, we have investigated the microsomal linoleic acid desaturation steps into arachidonic acid in 10- and 30-day-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), as compared to their normotensive control rats, Wistar Kyoto (WKY). Suckled by adoptive Wistar normotensive female, the SHR and WKY were fed the same diet. Our results show lower Δ6 and Δ5 desaturase activities (the limiting steps in the bioconversion of linoleic acid into arachidonic acid) in the young SHR, as compared to the WKY normotensive rats. The fatty acid composition of liver microsomal total lipids evidences a higher proportion of linoleic acid in SHR than in WKY, in agreement with the partially deple…

Remodelling of biological parameters during human ageing: evidence for complex regulation in longevity and in type 2 diabetes.

2013

Factor structure analyses have revealed the presence of specific biological system markers in healthy humans and diseases. However, this type of approach in very old persons and in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is lacking. A total sample of 2,137 Italians consisted of two groups: 1,604 healthy and 533 with T2DM. Age (years) was categorized as adults (≤65), old (66-85), oldest old (>85-98) and centenarians (≥99). Specific biomarkers of routine haematological and biochemical testing were tested across each age group. Exploratory factorial analysis (EFA) by principal component method with Varimax rotation was used to identify factors including related variables. Structural equation modelling (SEM) wa…

Connectivity percolation in suspensions of hard platelets

2012

We present a study on connectivity percolation in suspensions of hard platelets by means of Monte Carlo simulation. We interpret our results using a contact-volume argument based on an effective single--particle cell model. It is commonly assumed that the percolation threshold of anisotropic objects scales as their inverse aspect ratio. While this rule has been shown to hold for rod-like particles, we find that for hard plate-like particles the percolation threshold is non-monotonic in the aspect ratio. It exhibits a shallow minimum at intermediate aspect ratios and then saturates to a constant value. This effect is caused by the isotropic-nematic transition pre-empting the percolation tran…

Evaluation of Record Linkage Methods for Iterative Insertions

2009

Summary Objectives: There have been many developments and applications of mathematical methods in the context of record linkage as one area of interdisciplinary research efforts. However, comparative evaluations of record linkage methods are still underrepresented. In this paper improvements of the Fellegi-Sunter model are compared with other elaborated classification methods in order to direct further research endeavors to the most promising methodologies. Methods: The task of linking records can be viewed as a special form of object identification. We consider several non-stochastic methods and procedures for the record linkage task in addition to the Fellegi-Sunter model and perform an e…

Real-time flaw detection on a complex object: comparison of results using classification with a support vector machine, boosting, and hyperrectangle-…

2006

We present a classification work performed on industrial parts using artificial vision, a support vector machine (SVM), boost- ing, and a combination of classifiers. The object to be controlled is a coated heater used in television sets. Our project consists of detect- ing anomalies under manufacturer production, as well as in classi- fying the anomalies among 20 listed categories. Manufacturer speci- fications require a minimum of ten inspections per second without a decrease in the quality of the produced parts. This problem is ad- dressed by using a classification system relying on real-time ma- chine vision. To fulfill both real-time and quality constraints, three classification algorit…

Emergence of statistically validated financial intraday lead-lag relationships

2014

According to the leading models in modern finance, the presence of intraday lead-lag relationships between financial assets is negligible in efficient markets. With the advance of technology, however, markets have become more sophisticated. To determine whether this has resulted in an improved market efficiency, we investigate whether statistically significant lagged correlation relationships exist in financial markets. We introduce a numerical method to statistically validate links in correlation-based networks, and employ our method to study lagged correlation networks of equity returns in financial markets. Crucially, our statistical validation of lead-lag relationships accounts for mult…

New Measurements of the Beam Normal Spin Asymmetries at Large Backward Angles with Hydrogen and Deuterium Targets

2017

International audience; New measurements of the beam normal single spin asymmetry in the electron elastic and quasielastic scattering on the proton and deuteron, respectively, at large backward angles and at ⟨Q2⟩=0.22  (GeV/c)2 and ⟨Q2⟩=0.35  ( GeV/c)2 are reported. The experimentally observed asymmetries are compared with the theoretical calculation of Pasquini and Vanderhaeghen [Phys. Rev. C 70, 045206 (2004).PRVCAN0556-281310.1103/PhysRevC.70.045206]. The agreement of the measurements with the theoretical calculations shows a dominance of the inelastic intermediate excited states of the nucleon, πN and the Δ resonance. The measurements explore a new, important parameter region of the exc…

Adiabatic-antiadiabatic crossover in a spin-Peierls chain

2004

We consider an XXZ spin-1/2 chain coupled to optical phonons with non-zero frequency $\omega_0$. In the adiabatic limit (small $\omega_0$), the chain is expected to spontaneously dimerize and open a spin gap, while the phonons become static. In the antiadiabatic limit (large $\omega_0$), phonons are expected to give rise to frustration, so that dimerization and formation of spin-gap are obtained only when the spin-phonon interaction is large enough. We study this crossover using bosonization technique. The effective action is solved both by the Self Consistent Harmonic Approximation (SCHA)and by Renormalization Group (RG) approach starting from a bosonized description. The SCHA allows to an…

The Extinction of Generations in Generation-Dependent Bellman-Harris Branching Processes with Exponential Lifespan

1978

If V is the time when in a Bellman-Harris branching model the k-th generation disappears out of the population, and if all individuals have exponentially distributed lifespans, the asymptotic behavior of the tail of the distribution of the extinction time V , P(V > t), is obtained, even if the distributions of the lifespans and the offspring sizes vary generation-dependent. Furthermore the times of extinction of several successive generations can be specified for the generation- independent case of the Markov branching model in continuous time. If the initial number of individuals and the absolute time grow up appropriately linked, a Poisson limit theorem for generation sizes will be given.
