The problems presented by the court are very complicated, the main one concerning the question in what form the obligation of paying for a stay in a social welfare home should be settled. 23-hour observation endocrine neck surgery: lessons learned from a case series of over 1700 patients

Although the surgical procedures concerning the thyroid and the parathyroid glands are considered safe, the possible occurrence of complications (mainly hematoma and hypocalcemia) limit the short stay surgery. At our institution a 23-hour-surgery with overnight hospital stay for endocrine neck surgical procedures was introduced since 2004. The present case series analyses the institutional results. Over 1913 endocrine neck surgery procedures, 1730 patients (90,2%) were managed according to this model. Objectives To apply Wolff’s Criteria to hospital discharge records (HDR) in order to detect adverse events worthy of further study. Methods Gynecology and Obstetrics Units of three Sicilian hospitals were considered and HDR regarding ordinary and day hospital admissions in 2008 were collected. A matched case-control study was designed, by random selection of 10 controls at maximum for each case. Abstract. This study develops a screening method for older patients based on nursing procedure to predict complications associated with cognitive impairment during a hospital stay. This multicenter diagnostic cohort study among older hospitalized patients was carried out in eight primary-care hospitals. A 69-year-old man with a history of hypertension and severe pulmonary disease had asymptomatic bilateral common iliac and popliteal artery aneurysms. A bifurcated Talent and two Wallgraft stent-grafts were deployed via open femoral arteriotomies to exclude the aneurysms, respectively. The patient had an uncomplicated recovery, with no transfusion need; the hospital stay was 4 days. After a 5-year follow-up, no complication or endoleak has been detected, with patency of endografts and a mean decrease of 15% in aneurysm transverse diameters. Background The aim of our study was to clarify the indications for operation in invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. Methods Nineteen patients with hematologic malignancy, in whom invasive pulmonary aspergillosis developed during the course of neutropenia, had operations. Neutropenia lasted 28 days (range, 15 to 45 days). The preoperative diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis was based on computed tomographic scan findings (halo or air crescent signs). We describe our experience using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) as an adjunct to the surgical management of Pancoast tumors. Between March 2004 and November 2009, 13 patients with Pancoast tumors were included in this study. Surgery was performed by positioning the patient to allow either an anterior or a posterior thoracotomy. VATS was employed to explore the pleural cavity, to optimize the surgical access and as an assistance during surgical resection.
