An unsupervised Learning Algorithm for Fatigue Crack Detection in Waveguides

2009

Ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) are a useful tool in structural health monitoring (SHM) applications that can benefit from built-in transduction, moderately large inspection ranges, and high sensitivity to small flaws. This paper describes an SHM method based on UGWs and outlier analysis devoted to the detection and quantification of fatigue cracks in structural waveguides. The method combines the advantages of UGWs with the outcomes of the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to extract defect-sensitive features aimed at performing a multivariate diagnosis of damage. In particular, the DWT is exploited to generate a set of relevant wavelet coefficients to construct a uni-dimensional or multi-di…

Design of innovative friction damper devices for earthquake-resilient RC frames with Hybrid Steel-Trussed Concrete Beams

2021

This thesis focuses on the design of innovative friction damper devices for earthquake-resilient Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames realized with Hybrid Steel-Trussed Concrete Beams (HSTCBs). These devices fall within the framework of the recently-proposed low-damage design strategy for structures built in earthquake-prone areas, on the basis of which the structures are designed to experience negligible damage when subjected to seismic events. The comprehensive solution proposed aims at introducing a feasible option for building earthquake-resilient RC Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs), having been proposed very few solutions for this structural scheme so far. Innovative solutions are proposed fo…

Targeted steel frames by means of innovative moment resisting connections

2021

Abstract The present paper proposes the use of stepped cross section devices on steel frames aiming at reproducing a pre-established target push-over curve. To this aim a Limited Resistance Plastic Device (LRPD) to be inserted along selected structural members is proposed. The following two main specific features for LRPD are required: any elastic flexural stiffness variation of the original selected member must be avoided; an ultimate plastic bending moment value equal to an assigned percentage of the original limit resistance value must be ensured. Steel frames equipped with LRPD are modeled by means of an extension of a recently proposed Fibre Smart Displacement Based (FSDB) beam element…

Passive and transpassive behaviour of Alloy 31 in a heavy brine LiBr solution

2013

The passive and transpassive behaviour of Alloy 31, a highly alloyed austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08031), has been investigated in a LiBr heavy brine solution (400 g/l) at 25 °C using potentiostatic polarisation combined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Mott–Schottky analysis. The passive film formed on Alloy 31 has been found to be p-type and/or n-type in electronic character, depending on the film formation potential. The thickness of the film formed at potentials within the passive region increases linearly with applied potential. The film formed at transpassive potentials is thinner and more conductive than the film formed within the passive region. These observations…

Inverting Multiple Residual Stress Components from Multiple Cuts with the Contour Method

2007

An extension of the contour method is presented which allows the measurement of multiple stress components by making multiple cuts. In the contour method, a body is carefully cut in two using wire electric discharge machining (EDM). The contours, or shapes, of the cut surfaces are then measured and used to calculate the original residual stress normal to the cut plane using a simple finite element calculation. In the extension presented here, the two pieces from the original body can be cut again in a transverse direction, and the contours of the new cut surfaces are measured. The stresses calculated on the planes of these second cuts have been affected by the first cut. Then a simple inver…

Study Regarding Process of the Electrical Discharge Machining with Magnetic Activation of the Welded Joints of some Materials High Alloy Steel

2021

The scientific paper presents an extensive research on modeling and optimizing the technological parameters of the process for processing by processing electric discharges with massive electrode with and without magnetic activation. Scientific research is based on real data collected from the process of electrical discharges performed on various samples extracted from areas of welded joints of metal components made of high alloy steel. The processing of experimental data was performed both classically and actively, especially the method of the central factorial experiment composed of orthogonal and rotary. The process parameters that were initially modeled and subsequently optimized were ba…

Effect of coatings on long term behaviour of a commercial stainless steel for solid oxide electrolyser cell interconnect application in H2 /H2O atmos…

2014

Abstract K41X (AISI 441) stainless steel evidenced a high electrical conductivity after 3000 h ageing in H 2 /H 2 O side when used as interconnect for solid oxide electrolyser cells (SOEC) working at 800 °C. Perovskite (La 1 − x Sr x MnO 3 − δ ) and spinel (Co 3 O 4 ) oxides coatings were applied on the surface of the ferritic steel for ageing at 800 °C for 3000 h. Both coatings improved the behaviour of the steel and give interesting opportunities to use the K41X steel as interconnect for hydrogen production via high temperature steam electrolysis. Co 3 O 4 reduced into Co leading to a very good Area Specific Resistance (ASR) parameter, 0.038 Ω cm 2 . Despite a good ASR (0.06 Ω cm 2 ), La …

Effect of Temperature on Thermogalvanic Coupling of Alloy 31 in Libr Solutions Studied by Means of Imposed Potential Measurements

2011

[EN] Corrosion resistance of Alloy 31, a highly alloyed stainless steel (UNS N08031) were studied in heavy brine LiBr solutions (400, 700 and 992 g/l) at different temperatures using electrochemical techniques. The mixed potential theory was used to evaluate thermogalvanic corrosion of Alloy 31 in the studied LiBr solutions. Potentiodynamic curves indicate that high temperatures favoured both cathodic and anodic processes, increasing passive current densities and decreasing the pitting potential. Generally, the cold electrode of the pair was the anode of the thermogalvanic cell.

Load carrying capacity of RC compressed columns strengthened with steel angles and strips

2012

Abstract In this paper a comparison between the analytical expressions for the prediction of the load carrying capacity of strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) columns with steel angles and strips is made. Expressions examined consider: the strength contribution due to the confinement effects induced by transverse strips; the composite action due to steel angles and unconfined concrete core; the strength contribution due to the composite actions of angles and concrete core taking into account that steel angles are subjected to axial force and bending moment and concrete core is confined by transverse strips. Design rules given by recent codes for the design of the strengthened columns are …

Review of push-out and shear response of hybrid steel-trussed concrete beams

2018

The hybrid steel trussed concrete beams examined in the present study are comprised of two principal components, i.e., a steel joist with inclined rebars, realized in industry, which is welded to a smooth steel plate and then embedded within the concrete cast in situ. The paper presents first the state of the art on laboratory tests and analytical modeling of the steel-to-concrete stress transfer mechanism investigated by push-out tests. Next, the most relevant scientific contributions currently available in the technical literature regarding experimental investigation on actual shear behavior are summarized and discussed. Lastly codes and analytical models are reviewed.
