Entrapment and characterization of functional allosteric conformers of hemocyanin in sol–gel matrices

Hemocyanins are giant oxygen transport proteins of molluscs and arthropods, which display high cooperativity and a complex pattern of conformations, generated by hierarchical allosteric interactions of their complex quaternary structure. Prevalence of Listeria spp. and characterization of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from food products in Tetouan, Morocco

A total of 1096 food samples were purchased in Tetouan, North-Western of Morocco, to examine the presence of Listeria spp. Eighty (7.3%) of the tested samples were found positive for the presence of Listeria spp., while L. monocytogenes was detected in 16 (1.5%) samples. L. monocytogenes isolates belonged to clonal complexes CC2 (PCR serogroup IVb) and CC199 (PCR serogroup Ila) and to 8 different combined AscI/Apal pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles. Moral assessment of frozen human embryo adoption in the light of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church

As the number of frozen human embryos continues to rise daily, with numbers not expected to fall, an answer must be found to this dilemma. Four possible solutions have been suggested: a) thaw the embryos and allow them to perish; b) thaw them and donate them for biomedical research; c) thaw them and donate them in adoption; and d) leave them frozen indefinitely. Differentiating cancer cells reveal early large-scale genome regulation by pericentric domains.

Vanillin cell sensor

Our project for iGEM 2006 consisted of designing a cellular vanillin biosensor. We used an EnvZ -E. coli strain as a chassis, and constructed two different devices: a sensor and an actuator, assembled using OmpR-P as a standardised mediator. The sensor device contained a computation- ally designed vanillin receptor and a synthetic two-component signal transduction protein (Trz). The receptor protein was based on a ribose-binding protein as scaffold. The Trz was built by fusion of the periplasmic and transmembrane domains of a Trg protein with an EnvZ kinase domain. AbstractConjugated linoleic acids (CLA) have recently been recognized to reduce body fat and plasma lipids in some animals. This study demonstrated that the steatosis accompanying the fat loss induced by trans-10,cis-12-C18:2 (CLA2) and not cis-9,trans-11-C18:2 (CLA1) isomer in C57BL/6j mice was not due to an alteration of the liver lipoprotein production that was even increased. The 3-fold decrease in plasma triacylglycerol contents and the induction of mRNA expression of low-density lipoprotein receptors concomitantly observed in CLA2-fed mice suggested an increase in the lipoprotein clearance at the level of the liver itself. Abstract This ethnographically oriented study followed the writing experiences of four students on an international masters programme in Finland. Gathering a range of data, the study set out to examine what counts as good writing on a programme with a very diverse student body in which English is used as a lingua franca.
