The interaction between the immune and endocrine systems has long been recognized in vertebrates. In fish, it is known that the prevalence and intensity of such infections are higher in males than in females and probably related to sex steroid hormone levels. In addition, the immune response in the fish gonad tissues is specifically regulated to prevent infertility. This condition is used by some pathogens to colonize the fish gonad, evade the systemic immune response, and so spread to the progeny. Estrogenic activity of zearalenone, α-zearalenol and β-zearalenol assessed using the E-Screen assay in MCF-7 cells

Mycotoxins, including zearalenone (ZEA), can occur worldwide in cereals. They can enter the food chain and cause several health disorders. ZEA and its derivatives (α-zearalenol, α-ZOL and β-zearalenol, β-ZOL) have structural analogy to estrogen, thus they can bind to estrogen receptors (ERs). In order to characterize the estrogenic activity of ZEA, α-ZOL and β-ZOL, the proliferation of ER-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7) exposed to these mycotoxins was measured. After exposure at levels ranging from 6.25 to 25 µM, cell proliferation was evaluated by using the E-Screen bioassay. Objective: To describe the role of biotechnological therapies in patients with tumor necrosis factor receptor associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) and to identify any predictor of complete response.Methods: Clinical, laboratory, and therapeutic data from 44 Caucasian TRAPS patients treated with biologic agents were retrospectively collected in 16 Italian tertiary Centers.Results: A total of 55 biological courses with anakinra (n = 26), canakinumab (n = 16), anti-TNF-α agents (n = 10), and tocilizumab (n = 3) were analyzed. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome affecting patients with liver diseases, mainly those with liver cirrhosis. The mildest form of HE is minimal HE (MHE), with mild cognitive impairment, attention deficit, psychomotor slowing and impaired visuo-motor and bimanual coordination. MHE may progress to clinical HE with worsening of the neurological alterations which may lead to reduced consciousness and, in the worse cases, may progress to coma and death. The metabolites of the genus onopordum (asteraceae): Chemistry and biological properties

Onopordum is an interesting genus belonging to the tribe Cardueae (Asteraceae family), and the species of this genus are used as food and in the popular medicine of several countries. The present paper reviews all the metabolites present in all the species of this genus, reported up to 2009, and several chemotaxonomic consideration have been made. Furthermore, the occurrence in other genus, the spectral data, the synthetic approaches, the chemical modifications and the biological properties of the sesquiterpenes of genus Onopor- dum have been reviewed.

Partial purification and characterization of an NAD-dependent 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase from Clostridium innocuum

In nine strains of Clostridium innocuum, 3 beta-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenating activities were detected. 3 beta, 7 alpha, 12 alpha-Trihydroxy- and 3 beta-hydroxy-12-keto-5 beta-cholanoic acids were identified as reduction products of the respective 3-keto bile acids by gas-liquid chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. One strain was shown to contain a NAD-dependent 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. Enzyme production was constitutive in the absence of added bile acids.
