Behavioral and physiological bases of relaxing and stimulating effects of odors and music

This doctoral thesis examines the psychological and physiological mechanisms as well as the factors involved in the relaxing and stimulating effect (emotional activation) of pleasant odors, building on research work from the music domain. In Studies 1a and 1b, we observed that the modulation of the activation induced by odors influenced temporal information processing by speeding-up or slowing-down the rate of the internal clock pacemaker, similarly to what was previously reported using musicalstimuli. Microfluidic Synthesis of Actuating Microparticles from a Thiol-Ene Based Main-Chain Liquid Crystalline Elastomer.

In this article the microfluidic synthesis of strongly actuating particles on the basis of a liquid crystalline main-chain elastomer is presented. The synthesis is carried out in a capillary-based co-flow microreactor by photo-initiated thiol-ene click chemistry of a liquid crystalline monomer mixture. These microparticles exhibit a deformation from a spherical to a rod-like shape during the thermal-initiated phase transition of the liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) at which the particles’ aspect ratio is almost doubled. Synthesis and characterization of redox-sensitive polyurethanes based on L-glutathione oxidized and poly(ether ester) triblock copolymers

Abstract Segmented polyurethanes, based on PCL-PEG-PCL copolymers, 1,4-diisocyanatobutane and l -glutathione oxidized, used as chain extender, were synthetized. Three different reactions conditions were investigated using three different copolymers having ɛ-CL/polyethylene glycol molar ratios equal to 12, 24 and 36 and three different reaction conditions. Nordic Comparison of 75-Year-Olds - Sensory and Psychomotor Functions

Sensory and psychomotor functions were studied among 75-year-old men and women in three Nordic localities (Glostrup in Denmark, Gothenburg in Sweden, and Jyvaskyla in Finland) as part of a comparative study on functional capacity and health. Random samples were drawn from the population registers in Glostrup (n=550) and Gothenburg (n=450), whereas in Jyvaskyla all 75-year-old residents (n=388) were invited to participate in the study. Participation rates varied from 66.8% in Gothenburg to 79.1% in Jyvaskyla. Subcomponent self-assembly, introduced by the Nitschke group,[1] is a process which allow complex structures to be generated from simple building blocks (generally aldehydes and amines). In this bottom-up approach, the building blocks spontaneously self-assemble around templates (usually metal ions) leading to a simultaneous covalent (C=N) and dative (N– metal) bonds formation. In this work, redox-sensitive polyurethane urea (PUU) based electrospun membranes have been exploited to chemically tether a pH-sensitive doxorubicin derivative achieved by linking a lipoyl hydrazide to the drug via a hydrazone linkage. First, the lipoyl-hydrazone-doxorubicin derivative labelled as LA-Hy-Doxo has been syn- thesized and characterized. Then, the molecule has been tethered, via a thiol-disulfide exchange reaction, to the redox-sensitive PUU (PolyCEGS) electrospun membrane.
