Time scales of adaptive behavior and motor learning in the presence of stochastic perturbations.
2009
In this paper, the major assumptions of influential approaches to the structure of variability in practice conditions are discussed from the perspective of a generalized evolving attractor landscape model of motor learning. The efficacy of the practice condition effects is considered in relation to the theoretical influence of stochastic perturbations in models of gradient descent learning of multiple dimension landscapes. A model for motor learning is presented combining simulated annealing and stochastic resonance phenomena against the background of different time scales for adaptation and learning processes. The practical consequences of the model's assumptions for the structure of pract…
New analytical approach to analyze the nonlinear regime of stochastic resonance
2015
We propose some approximate methods to explore the nonlinear regime of the stochastic resonance phenomenon. These approximations correspond to different truncation schemes of cumulants. We compare the theoretical results for the signal power amplification, obtained by using ordinary cumulant truncation schemes, that is Gaussian and excess approximations, the modified two-state approximation with those obtained by numerical simulations of the Langevin equation describing the dynamics of the system.
Subsignal-based denoising from piecewise linear or constant signal
2011
15 pages; International audience; n the present work, a novel signal denoising technique for piecewise constant or linear signals is presented termed as "signal split." The proposed method separates the sharp edges or transitions from the noise elements by splitting the signal into different parts. Unlike many noise removal techniques, the method works only in the nonorthogonal domain. The new method utilizes Stein unbiased risk estimate (SURE) to split the signal, Lipschitz exponents to identify noise elements, and a polynomial fitting approach for the sub signal reconstruction. At the final stage, merging of all parts yield in the fully denoised signal at a very low computational cost. St…
Cancer growth dynamics: stochastic models and noise induced effects
2009
In the framework of the Michaelis‐Menten (MM) reaction kinetics, we analyze the cancer growth dynamics in the presence of the immune response. We found the coexistence of noise enhanced stability (NES) and resonant activation (RA) phenomena which act in an opposite way with respect to the extinction of the tumor. The role of the stochastic resonance (SR) in the case of weak cancer therapy has been analyzed. The evolutionary dynamics of a system of cancerous cells in a model of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is investigated by a Monte Carlo approach. We analyzed the effects of a targeted therapy on the evolutionary dynamics of normal, first‐mutant and cancerous cell populations. We show how …
Stochastic resonance in a tunnel diode.
1994
We study stochastic resonance in a fast bistable electronic system: a tunnel diode. We investigate the phenomenon in a higher frequency regime than that studied in previous experiments. Detailed measurements of the output signal are reported for two values of the frequency of the periodic signal: ${\mathit{f}}_{\mathit{s}}$=1 kHz and ${\mathit{f}}_{\mathit{s}}$=10 kHz. We observe, in one case (${\mathit{f}}_{\mathit{s}}$=1 kHz), a nonmonotonic behavior characterized by a sharp dip in the output noise level measured at the frequency of the driving signal.
Noise effects in two different biological systems
2009
We investigate the role of the colored noise in two biological systems: (i) adults of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), and (ii) polymer translocation. In the first system we analyze, by directionality tests, the response of N. viridula individuals to subthreshold signals plus noise in their mating behaviour. The percentage of insects that react to the subthreshold signal shows a nonmonotonic behaviour, characterized by the presence of a maximum, as a function of the noise intensity. This is the signature of the non-dynamical stochastic resonance phenomenon. By using a “soft” threshold model we find that the maximum of the input-output cross correlation occurs in the same ra…
Quantum Stochastic Resonance in a Micromaser
1998
We demonstrate that quantum stochastic resonance allows for the noise-controlled synchronization of quantum jumps between the metastable states of the quantized radiation field in a micromaser. Under readily accessible experimental conditions optimal synchronization is achieved at a finite temperature $T\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}500\mathrm{mK}$ of the environment.
Stochastic resonance in a tunnel diode in the presence of white or coloured noise
1995
We study the signal-to-noise ratio, signal and noise output levels in a fast bistable electronic system: a tunnel diode. We observe stochastic resonance when the system is driven by a sum of a small periodic signal and noise. The phenomenon is investigated for values of the driving frequency as high as 10 kHz. This is the highest frequency value used in SR experiments until now. In the presence of «white noise», we observe a nonmonotonic behavior characterized by a sharp dip in the output noise level measured at 100Hz and 1 kHz. A similar behavior is predicated by recent theories. We also present preliminary experimental results of SR in the presence of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise. For the …
Magnetostochastic resonance under colored noise condition
2012
Stochastic resonance (SR) is an amplification of the system output in correspondence of well-defined finite values of the noise strength that is injected into the system [Gammaitoni et al., Rev. Mod. Phys. 70, 223 (1998), Grigorenko et al., IEEE Trans. Magn. 31, 2491 (1995), Mantegna et al., J. Appl. Phys. 97, 10E519 (2005)]. In order to clarify the influence of a colored noise, in this paper magnetostochastic resonance (MSR) in magnetic systems described by the dynamic Preisach model is numerically investigated in the presence of colored noise. In this paper it is shown that: a) noise spectrum affects MSR; b) white noise, 1/f and 1/f(2) noise induce in magnetic systems described by the dyn…
Noise effects on gap wave propagation in a nonlinear discrete LC transmission line
2007
International audience; We report here the results of numerical investigation of noise effects on the propagation in a nonlinear waveguide modeled by a discrete electrical line. Considering a periodic signal of frequency exceeding the natural cutoff frequency of this system, we show that noise can be used to trigger soliton generation in the medium. Besides the classical stochastic resonance signature exhibited by each oscillator of the network, our simulation results reveal in particular that the signal-to-noise ratio remains almost constant in the whole network for an appropriate amount of noise. This interesting feature insures for the generated solitons a quality preserved propagation a…
