Growth processes, dimensional parameters and scaling relationships of two conjugate sets of compactive shear bands in porous carbonate grainstones, F…
2012
Abstract Three main sets of deformation bands are identified in the Lower Pleistocene carbonate grainstones of Favignana Island (Italy). A bedding-parallel set is interpreted to contain compaction bands, based on the lack of evidence for shear. The other two sets are oriented at a high-angle to bedding, forming a conjugate pair comprised of compactive strike-slip shear bands. In this study, we focus on the compactive shear bands documenting their development, as well as analyzing their dimensional parameters and scaling relationships. Single compactive shear bands are thin, tabular zones with porosity less than the surrounding host rocks, and have thicknesses and displacements on the order …
The discovery of a Mycenaean-type tholos tomb in the Bronze Age necropolis of the Gazzi buried floodplain (Messina, Southern Italy): new geological a…
2019
This paper deals with a monument that is, up to this date, unique in Sicily and in the Italian peninsula: the Mycenaean-type tholos tomb of the Gazzi necropolis in Messina. A recent excavation in the alluvial deposits revealed extensive traces of a funerary area with a tholos tomb and several enchytrismos tombs with skeletal remains, presumably dated back to the end of the Early or the initial stage of the Middle(?) Bronze Age. The present multi-disciplinary investigation has been developed to analyse new data related to sediments, building stones and skeletal remains of this funerary area. The stratigraphic succession hosting the necropolis was formed by overbank sediments deposited on the…
Geochronology of the Hout River Shear Zone and the metamorphism in the Southern Marginal Zone of the Limpopo Belt, Southern Africa
2001
Abstract In this paper monazite U–Pb and zircon evaporation dates, stepleaching Pb/Pb results on garnet, staurolite and kyanite, and hornblende Ar/Ar data are presented which constrain the timing of granulite facies metamorphism in the Southern Marginal Zone of the Limpopo Belt and its thrusting onto the Kaapvaal Craton. The Southern Marginal Zone of the Limpopo Belt is considered to be a lower crustal equivalent of the northern Kaapvaal Craton. Granulite exhumation is associated with southward thrusting along the Hout River Shear Zone which is a set of thrust and strike slip shear zones. Zircon ages for the Matok Intrusive Complex which was emplaced within the zone during this thrusting (c…
Archaean granulite-facies paragneisses from central Swaziland: inferences on Palaeoarchaean crustal reworking and a complex metamorphic history
2014
We present a petrographic, petrological, geochemical, and geochronological study (U–Pb/Lu–Hf) on granulite-facies paragneisses of the Mahamba Gneiss Complex in central Swaziland, eastern Kaapvaal Craton. Our data suggest that prograde metamorphism occurred at c . 3.07 Ga. Dating of detrital zircons of a metapelite in combination with geochronological and ambiguous structural relationships with granitoid gneisses suggests two possible scenarios: (1) the time of deposition of the sedimentary protoliths is prior to c . 3.58 Ga; (2) c . 3.58 Ga granitoid crust was the basement for the sedimentary protoliths. Furthermore, enrichment in Ni and Cr in the Mahamba metasediments may originate from er…
Coelobiontic communities in neptunian fissures of synsedimentary tectonic origin in Permian reef, southern Urals, Russia
2007
Sedimentary dykes in the Permian reef complexes of the Russian platform are well preserved and important in providing information about reef growth, the reef biota and, particularly, cavity-dwelling organisms and sediment sources. Two main fissure assemblages are recognized with N80° and N170° (late Asselian-early Sakmarian) and N130°–140° and N60° (Sakmarian-Artinskian) orientations. These contemporaneous orthogonal dyke sets present orientations corresponding to the regional tectonic fabric and a tectonic origin for fracturing associated with the foreland basin development. The largest dykes record eight lithofacies and several stages of fracture opening. Stromatoids and centimetre-thick …
Pre-3000 Ma thermal history of the Archean Kaap Valley puton, South Africa
1992
The Kaap Valley pluton is one of several early Archean (3200-3500 Ma) tonalitetrondhjemite plutons that surround the Barberton Greenstone belt, southern Africa. Precise dating using single-grain 207 Pb/ 206 Pb evaporation of zircon and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar laser step-heating of hornblende and biotite indicates that, in its interior, the Kaap Valley pluton preserves a memory of its initial intrusion and cooling, which spanned a time from 3225 to 3142 Ma. The pluton also records the effect of a low-temperature thermal event at its margin as seen by a 40 Ar/ 39 Ar biotite age of 3035 Ma, which is perhaps related to hydrothermal activity and gold mineralization in the adjacent Barberton Greenstone belt…
Late Archaean foreland basin deposits, Belingwe greenstone belt, Zimbabwe
2001
Abstract The c. 2.65 Ga old sedimentary Cheshire Formation of the Belingwe greenstone belt (BDB), central Zimbabwe, has been studied in detail for the first time to shed some light on the much debated evolution of this classical belt. The Cheshire Formation rests sharply on a mafic volcanic unit (Zeederbergs Formation) and comprises a basal, eastward-sloping carbonate ramp sequence built of shallowing-upward, metre-scale sedimentary cycles. The cycles strongly resemble Proterozoic and Phanerozoic carbonate cycles and might have formed by small-scale eustatic sea level changes. The top of the carbonate ramp is represented by a karst surface. The carbonates are overlain by and grade laterally…
Use of the eggshells in removing heavy metals from waste water - the process kinetics and efficiency
2019
Studies of the efficiency of Ni, Cu and Cd cations removal from water solutions were carried out, with the use of clay limestone, hen eggshells from eggs for consumption and hen eggshells after hatching, which main element is calcium carbonate. Hen eggshells are a waste product, which can be used as a substitute of clay limestone in removing heavy metals from wet flue gas desulphurisation installation. Mixed solutions of Ni, Cu and Cd were used in the research, with the composition similar to the waste water from wet flue gas desulphurisation installation: Ni (0.009-0.053 mmol/dm3), Cu (0.008-0.057 mmol/dm3)and Cd (0.003-0.008 mmol/dm3). The metals were determined by flame atomic absorption…
Induction of Apoptosis and Chemosensitization by the Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Trichostatin in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells: Molecular Analysis…
2011
The mRNA and protein levels of RKIP are reduced and those of YY1 increased in clinical HCC. Loss, mutation, or promoter hypermethylation of the RKIP gene may not account for the downregulation of RKIP in HCC. Histone deacetylation can silence gene expression and play a significant role in hepatocarcinogenesis. The histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACI) trichostatin induced cell growth inhibition and proapoptotic effects in HA22T/VGH and HepG2 HCC cells; it also exhibited synergy with doxorubicin. Treatment with trichostatin caused histone hyperacetylation and down- or upregulated expression of different genes (such as β-catenin, cyclin D1, hTERT, XIAP, and IL-6). These changes might, at leas…
