A comparison of jet production rates on the Z0 resonance to perturbative QCD

1990

The production rates for 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-jet hadronic final states have been measured with the DELPHI detector at the e+e- storage ring LEP at centre of mass energies around 91.5 GeV. Fully corrected data are compared to O(αs 2) QCD matrix element calculations and the QCD scale parameter ΛMS is determined for different parametrizations of the renormalization scale μ2. Including all uncertainties our result is αs(MZ 2)=0.114±0.003[stat.]±0.004[syst.]±0.012[theor.] .

High-precision x-ray spectroscopy of highly charged ions with microcalorimeters

2013

The precise determination of the energy of the Lyman α1 and α2 lines in hydrogen-like heavy ions provides a sensitive test of quantum electrodynamics in very strong Coulomb fields. To improve the experimental precision, the new detector concept of microcalorimeters is now exploited for such measurements. Such detectors consist of compensated-doped silicon thermistors and Pb or Sn absorbers to obtain high quantum efficiency in the energy range of 40–70 keV, where the Doppler-shifted Lyman lines are located. For the first time, a microcalorimeter was applied in an experiment to precisely determine the transition energy of the Lyman lines of lead ions at the experimental storage ring at GSI. T…

Design and Performance of a High Temperature Superconducting Axial Flux Generator

2013

In this paper, a high temperature axial flux (HTSAF) generator is presented. In this generator the excitation of the generator is obtained by using some high temperature superconducting magnets. In order to reduce the negative effects of vibrations, the excitation is located on the stationary part of the generator. Starting, running and endurance tests of the machine are presented.

The energy calibration of LEP in the 1993 scan

1995

This report summarizes the procedure for providing the absolute energy calibration of the LEP beams during the energy scan in 1993. The average beam energy around the LEP ring was measured in 25 calibrations with the resonant depolarization technique. The time variation of this average beam energy is well described by a model of the accelerator based on monitored quantities. The absolute calibration of the centre of mass energies of the off-peak points is determined with a precision of 2 parts in 10(5) resulting in a systematic error on the Z-mass of about 1.4 MeV and on the Z-width of about 1.5 MeV.

In-trap conversion electron spectroscopy

2002

The Penning trap REXTRAP at ISOLDE was used to test the feasibility of in-trap conversion electron spectroscopy. The results of simulations, experiments with solid conversion electron sources as well as first on-line and tests with trapped radioactive ions are presented. In addition to obtaining high-resolution spectroscopic data, the detection of conversion electrons was found to be a useful tool for the diagnostics of the trap operation. The tests proved the feasibility of in-trap spectroscopy but also revealed some potential problems to be addressed in the future.

Hyperfine measurements in a storage ring

1995

Starting with a look at the outstanding role of the hydrogen atom in modern physics, this work reviews aspects of an extension of precision spectroscopy to the ground-state hyperfine structure of highly charged hydrogenic ions. In this connection, the preferences of heavy-ion storage rings are outlined and illuminated by the laser-spectroscopic measurement (the first of that kind) of the 1s hyperfine splitting of 209Bi82+, stored in the heavy-ion storage ring at GSI. The experimental results, including the mean lifetime of the upper 1s substate, are compared with the presently available theoretical calculations. The relevance of studying further hydrogenicc ions in the vicinity of the doubl…

Short-length storage of intense optical pulses in solid by adiabatic passage

2009

We propose a novel scheme of storage of intense pulses which allows a significant reduction of the storage length with respect to standard schemes. This scheme is particularly adapted to store optical information in media with fast relaxations.

A beamline for x-ray laser spectroscopy at the experimental storage ring at GSI

2013

By combining an x-ray laser (XRL) with a heavy-ion storage ring, precision laser spectroscopy of the fine-structure splitting in heavy Li-like ions will be possible. An initial study has been performed to determine the feasibility of a first experiment at the experimental storage ring at GSI in Darmstadt, which also has great potential for the experiments planned for FAIR. We plan to perform a unique, direct and precise measurement of a fine-structure transition in a heavy Li-like ion. Such a measurement will test state-of-the-art atomic structure calculations in strong fields. This endeavour will require that the existing infrastructure is complemented by a dedicated beamline for the XRL. …

Synchronized photonic modulators driven by surface acoustic waves

2013

Photonic modulators are one of the most important elements of integrated photonics. We have designed, fabricated, and characterized a tunable photonic modulator consisting of two 180 degrees-dephased output waveguide channels, driven by a surface acoustic wave in the GHz frequency range built on (Al,Ga)As. Odd multiples of the fundamental driven frequency are enabled by adjusting the applied acoustic power. A good agreement between theory and experimental results is achieved. The device can be used as a building block for more complex integrated functionalities and can be implemented in several material platforms. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

The Performance of Belle II Data Acquisition System in the First Physics Run

2019

The Belle II experiment is a new generation B-factory experiment at KEK in Japan aiming at the search for New Physics in a huge sample of B-meson dacays. The commissioning of the SuperKEKB accelerator was started in 2017 (Phase 1), and then a pilot run with outer detectors was performed in 2018 (Phase 2). From March this year, an operation with the full detector has been started for the physics data taking (Phase 3). The Belle II data acquisiton system (DAQ) is now fully working in the Phase 3 run. The system consists of the trigger timing distribution system, the common readout modules (COPPER) with the unified optical data link to the detector front end, the readout PCs and the network sw…
