Performing Pan American Airways through coloniality : an ANTi-History approach to narratives and business history

2018

This paper centers on the role of narratives in business history from an ANTi-History perspective. We focus on the networked processes through which narratives are told of, for, and by multi-national companies embed the development of ‘new imperialism’ and coloniality. We set out to achieve this through a discussion and application of ANTi-History to a study of Pan American Airways and particularly its performance as a maturing multi-national company and its relationship to postcoloniality. In the process, we also hope to contribute to recent calls in business history for more explicit accounts of the methods used in the development of historical accounts. We are concerned to encourage ‘a n…

‘World-class’ fantasies : A neocolonial analysis of international branch campuses

2018

In this article, we build on postcolonial studies and discourse analytical research exploring how the ‘world-class’ discourse as an ideology and a fantasy structures neocolonial relations in international branch campuses. We empirically examine how international branch campuses reproduce the fantasy of being so-called world-class operators and how the onsite faculty members identify with or resist this world-class fantasy through mimicry. Our research material originates from fieldwork conducted in business-school international branch campuses operating in the United Arab Emirates. Our findings show the ambivalent nature of mimicry towards the world-class fantasy to include both compliance …

Barriers to export: the power of organisational factors

2013

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the export strategy of international business by explicitly comparing exporting firms with the non‐exporting ones, given that they supposedly differ due to the presence of organizational export barriers.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses a database with more than 55,000 registered enterprises from all commercial sectors to demonstrate that two strategic groups really exist: exporters and non‐exporters.FindingsThe findings support the existence of both groups, which differ significantly regarding three kinds of organizational factors that act as mobility barriers constraining migration of non‐exporting enterprises to the exporting group: size (to…

Refinement and validation of a comprehensive scale for measuring HR practices aimed at performance-enhancement and employee-support

2019

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to refine and validate a Human Resource practices (HRP) scale to measure employees' perceptions and test a two-tier model structured in eight practices and two bundles. In a sample of 554 employees, an EFA (Exploratory Factor Analysis) offered six factors that explained about 70% of the variance. Then, with 1647 employees (from 41 Spanish organizations), first- and second-order models were tested with Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The former encompasses eight practices. The latter grouped the practices in two bundles, one on enhancing performance and the other on supporting employees. The Cronbach's alpha, Rho coefficient (Composite Reliability Co…

Personality Types and Applicant Reactions in Real-life Selection

2013

The study aimed to determine if an applicant's personality type is associated with his/her reactions (fairness perceptions, face validity perceptions, and predictive validity perceptions) to the selection process. The participants (N = 258) were real-life applicants for admission to a vocational school. A person-centered approach was applied to find subgroups with similar personality profiles. Latent profile analysis found four personality types: Resilient (45%), Overcontrolled (13%), Undercontrolled (10%), and Bohemian (32%). The Resilient and Bohemian personality types had more favorable perceptions of test fairness than the Overcontrolled type. Personality type did not affect face validi…

Converging Analysis of the Concept of Strategic Group in the Spanish Lighting Industry

2008

Strategic group literature does not seem to offer strong enough theoretical bases to state the very existence of strategic groups and their effects on firm’s conduct and performance. The empirical validation of the existence of strategic groups has been usually done trying to contrast their predictive validity in relation to performance, obtaining conflicting evidence. Other papers have decided to contrast the convergent validity of the strategic group concept using different definitions and measures of this construct. Our work belongs to the second type of studies. It tries to make progress in the development of a theoretical model, able to state the industry features which affect the prob…

How to reduce energy and water consumption in the preparation of raw materials for ceramic tile manufacturing: Dry versus wet route

2017

Abstract Dry and wet routes in the ceramic tile manufacturing process refer to two different technologies for preparing the raw materials for the forming stage. Both result in a granulated solid ready for use in the pressing stage, but with different characteristics. The dry route was the first to be developed. As quality standards and tile sizes increased, the wet route was developed and introduced successfully into the manufacturing process. Since 1990, the wet route has been the most used around the world to prepare ceramic tile body raw materials. The powder produced by the wet route has finer particles and higher flowability, which has allowed the production of higher quality ceramic t…

Proces selekcji kandydatów partii politycznych w wyborach Prezydenta RP – motywacje, dylematy, strategie

2022

Porusz…

Pride or Embarrassment? Employees’ Emotions and Corporate Social Responsibility

2013

This study explores how the employees of a financial firm use emotional arguments to construct different views of their employer's corporate social responsibility (CSR). It is theoretically based on the recent literature regarding employee perspectives of CSR, and especially on the role of emotions in CSR. Furthermore, the study utilizes rhetorical theory as a framework for data analysis. A qualitative study, based on face-to-face interviews, was conducted among 27 employees in a Finnish financial firm. The study identifies six categories of emotional arguments the employees used to construct views of where their employing organization's CSR is derived from. These categories relate positive…
