Effects of the indentation process on fatigue life of drilled specimens: optimization of the distance between adjacent holes

2016

The generation of permanent compressive stresses around the holes is recognized as a valuable mean to delay the onset and propagation of the defects and to extend the fatigue life of the mechanical components. In the work, a bilateral indentation process, performed on each side of the component, is widely used in order to create a residual circumferential stress field around the area to be drilled and that persists after the drilling operation. In order to evaluate the process parameters and to identify optimal geometric solutions, several static and fatigue tests are conducted on AW 6082-T6 aluminum alloy specimen where two holes are created. In particular, experimental tests on only drill…

Flexural vibrations of discontinuous layered elastically bonded beams

2018

Abstract This paper addresses the dynamic flexural behavior of layered elastically bonded beams carrying an arbitrary number of elastic translational supports and rotational joints. The beams are referred to as discontinuous for the discontinuities of response variables at the application points of supports/joints. The Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis is assumed to hold for each layer separately, and a linear constitutive relation between the horizontal interlayer slip and the interlaminar shear force is considered. Based on the theory of generalized functions to handle the discontinuities of response variables due to supports/joints, exact beam modes are obtained from a characteristic equation b…

Rutting analysis of different rubberised stone mastic asphalt mixtures: from binders to mixtures

2021

Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) has been broadly used on heavily trafficked roads and motorways in the UK due to its known stability and durability. In this study, several sets of SMA mixtures were produced using different rubberised bitumens, including a Fischer–Tropsch wax pre-treated rubberised bitumen. Properties associated with rutting were evaluated using both linear and nonlinear viscoelastic analyses, using different test methods such as the Strategic Highway Research Programme (SHRP), Shenoy rutting parameter, zero shear viscosity (ZSV) and multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests. The rutting resistance of the resulting SMA mixtures was assessed using the Repeated Load Axial Test (R…

Aging resistance of bio-epoxy jute-basalt hybrid composites as novel multilayer structures for cladding

2017

Abstract Aging resistance of jute reinforced laminates is compared with two jute/basalt hybrid laminates prepared with different stacking sequences (i.e., sandwich and intercalated configuration). To this aim, composites are exposed to cyclic conditions comprising hygrothermal stress and UV radiation to promote an accelerated aging, for a period of 84 days. Specimens of each laminate are tested after 14, 28, 56 and 84 days, respectively. Quasi-static flexural tests, Charpy impact tests and dynamic mechanical tests are performed according to international ASTM and ISO standards. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry are used to evaluate the morpholog…

Tritium distribution and chemical forms in the irradiated beryllium pebbles before and after thermoannealing

2011

Abstract Beryllium pebbles are foreseen as a neutron multiplier in the tritium breeding blanket of the future fusion devices. Tritium inventory in the beryllium as a result of neutron-induced transmutations is a significant safety and technological issue for the operation of the breeding blanket. In this study, beryllium pebbles from 3 different irradiation experiments: BERYLLIUM, EXOTIC 8/3-13 and PBA, performed at High Flux Reactor HFR have been investigated. The distribution of tritium in the bulk of the pebbles and the abundance ratios of chemical forms of tritium T 0 , T + and T 2 have been analysed before and after the different thermo-annealing experiments. In order to determine the …

Salt extraction from lime-based mortars: An experimental study using different poultice formulations

2020

Abstract The extractive capability of soluble salts in poultices treatments currently used in mortar conservation (ArbocelTM plus sepiolite; ArbocelTM, sepiolite and sand; Westox-Cocoon®) were tested to evaluate their efficiency and compatibility with specific mortar substrate. The pore size distribution of the experimental mortar substrate and of the blank dried poultices were preliminarily accomplished by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Desalination tests were carried out on specifically-formulated mortars after capillary absorption of Na2SO4 0.3 M solution. The efficiency of salt extraction was measured by means of electrical conductivity meter and ion chromatography. Among the test…

Analysis-oriented stress–strain model of CRFP-confined circular concrete columns with applied preload

2018

The compressive behavior of FRP-confined concrete is a current issue in the field of structural retrofitting. The available models well predict the stress–strain behavior under monotonic and cyclic loads. However, in the practical applications, columns that need an increasing of bearing capacity are often strengthened under serviceability load conditions, with a stress and strain state that could change the response of the reinforced systems with respect to the case of the unloaded state. In this paper, the compressive behavior of circular FRP-confined concrete columns with preload is analyzed with the introduction of a modified analysis-oriented model. Differently from the classical formul…

Investigation on Application of Basalt Materials as Reinforcement for Flexural Elements of Concrete Bridges

2015

Basalt polymers are rather new materials for civil engineering; therefore, identification of peculiarities and limitations of application of such polymers in concrete structures (particularly bridges) is of vital importance. This paper experimentally investigates deformation behaviour and cracking of flexural elements, which are predominant parameters governing serviceability of the bridges. Unlike a common practice, the present study is not limited by the analysis of concrete beams reinforced with the polymer bars; it also considers effectiveness of basalt fibre reinforced polymer sheets for repairing the beams. The analysis has revealed that a combination of the high strength and elastici…
