Control of activated sludge settleability using preaeration and preprecipitation

This paper deals with the addition of a preaeration and a preprecipitation stage to a conventional activated sludge process. The experiments were carried out in a pilot plant using wastewater from the city of Valencia (Spain) as feed. The effect of the F/M ratio and sludge age on sludge settleability was established. In both cases, process stability was observed to increase with respect to the conventional process. Good sludge settleability was thus assured in a greater F/M ratio range. A comparative economic study was also carried out.

Iron enrichment from hypoxic hypolimnion supports the blooming of Raphidiopsis raciborskii in a tropical reservoir.

Occurring worldwide, blooms of Raphidiopsis raciborskii threaten the use of water resources especially in tropical and subtropical waterbodies. Its high flexibility in the uses of light and macronutrients (C, N, P) frustrates any bloom prediction and control based on macronutrients regulation. Abstract Among various types of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), the tension leg platform (TLP) floating wind turbines have relatively small motions due to stiff tendons. Similar to TLP applications in the offshore industry, tendon failure may lead to deteriorated stability and large transient responses, which should be considered as part of accidental limit state (ALS) checks at the design stage of the TLP FOWTs. Nitrification of anaerobically pretreated municipal landfill leachate at low temperature

Abstract Nitrification of anaerobically pretreated municipal landfill leachate (270–1000 mg COD l −1 , 53–270 mg NH 4 –N l −1 ) was studied in laboratory-scale activated sludge reactors without (AS) and with (ASC) the addition of plastic carrier material. The reactors were run at 10°C (149 d), 7°C (21 d) and 5°C (16 d). With a loading rate of 0.027 g NH 4 –N g MLVSS −1  d −1 and a hydraulic retention time of ca. 3 d, at 10°C, complete nitrification was obtained in both reactors. At 7°C, and in loading rate of 0.023 g NH 4 –N g MLVSS −1  d −1 , both reactors appeared to be overloaded and ammonium removal was only ca. 93%. Semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of solid poultry slaughterhouse waste: effect of hydraulic retention time and loading.

Abstract We studied the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and loading on anaerobic digestion of poultry slaughterhouse wastes, using semi-continuously fed, laboratory-scale digesters at 31°C. The effect on process performance was highly significant: Anaerobic digestion appeared feasible with a loading of up to 0.8 kg volatile solids (VS)/m 3  d and an HRT of 50–100 days. The specific methane yield was high, from 0.52 to 0.55 m 3 /kg VS added . The electrochemical oxidation of organics in water was investigated theoretically and experimentally to determine the role of several operative parameters on the performances of the process in the presence and in the absence of sodium chloride. Vapour condensation and moisture accumulation in porous building wall

Simultaneous one-dimensional heat and vapour transfer with condensation in a porous wall is analytically investigated. Spatially steady-state distribution of accumulated moisture, less than the critical content, is described. Closed-form analytical expressions for the temperature, condensation rate and moisture content are obtained. The presented model requires material properties which are relatively simple and easy to determine. The results of the paper are illustrated with an example of multilayer building wall under climatic conditions.

Effect of surface finish on the mechanical behaviour of Dacron© 360 woven

Abstract In the present paper some experimental analyses of Dacron© 360 woven with and without surface treatment are presented to evaluate the effect of this treatment on the constitutive behaviour. This woven, widely adopted in sail manufacturing, is obtained by weaving polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarn and it shows some peculiar features due to the manufacturing process. The experimental tensile tests, clearly show the orthotropy behaviour of the material. The effect of the treatment results in a stiffer behaviour especially along the warp and bias direction and in an increment of ultimate strength in all directions.
