Abstract An effective predictive technique of the elastic springback in a fully 3D 90° V-punch V-die bending process is presented. This is based on a combined approach in which an explicit finite element code was used to simulate the loading phase of the process whilst an implicit procedure was used to analyse the springback phase. Two different punches with a nose radius of 4 and 8 mm were used. An increase in the springback ratio with the coining load was observed with the lower nose radius. Simultaneous zonation and calibration of pipe network parameters

A procedure for simultaneously zoning and calibrating pipe network parameters is proposed and applied to the determination of pipe resistance coefficients. The methodology is aimed at grouping the parameters of all the pipes into a small number of zone parameters, constrained to keep the difference between the computed and the measured water heads below a given tolerance. It is shown that, in the case of nonlooped networks, the methodology leads to a linear minimization problem where the objective function is a measure of the heterogeneity of the estimated parameters. Why do older drivers reduce driving? Findings from three European countries

The objective of this study was to find out the reasons, which lead drivers to reduce their driving in varying cultural settings. Data on the prevalence of reduced driving, the reasons for and factors associated with reduced driving were obtained from Finnish, German and Italian home-dwelling active drivers (n=710) aged 55 and older. The subjects were interviewed in autumn 1995 at their homes with a standardized questionnaire as a part of the European project Keeping the Elderly Mobile: Technology to Meet Their Outdoor Mobility Needs. Loading hoses in an offshore loading buoy system in the North Sea were investigated with respect to extreme load resistance and fatigue durability. Both experimental work and fatigue life analyses were carried out. The FLS test is based on the principle of a service simulation test according to the American Petroleum Institute (API) 17B guidelines. The test results given in number of endured cycles from the laboratory test are scaled to the in-service conditions. A Ritz approach for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling of stiffened composite panels with through-the-thickness cracks and/or delaminations is presented. The structure is modeled as the assembly of plate elements whose behavior is described by the First-order Shear Deformation Theory and von Karman’s geometric nonlinearities. Penalty techniques ensure continuity along the edges of contiguous plate elements and the enforcement of the restraints on the external boundaries. The paper is devoted to the investigation of seismic response of the masonry structure and describes experiences with modelling of boundary conditions during the test of large heavy model on 6DOF shaking table. The main aim of the research was how to increase dynamic resistance capacity of old masonry buildings including the medium and strong seismic effects. Finite Element Method Analysis of a Spur Gear with a Corrected Profile

The difference between the stress value calculated by a two-dimensional finite element model of spur gears and those obtained by the rules in ISO 6336 was evaluated. Hertz theory, which provides information on the extension of the contact area and the maximum value of the contact pressure, was used to choose the dimensions of the elements. The mesh was created using the stress analytical solution relative to a model consisting of two cylinders in contact. Mathematical modeling of vehicle frontal crash by a double spring-mass-damper model

This paper presents development of a mathematical model to represent the real vehicle frontal crash scenario. The vehicle is modeled by a double spring-mass-damper system. The front mass m1 represents the chassi of the vehicle and rear mass m2 represents the passenger compartment. The physical parameters of the model (Stiffness and dampers) are estimated using Nonlinear least square method (Levenberg-Marquart algorithm) by curve fitting the response of a double spring-mass-damper system to the experimental displacement data from the real vehicle crash. The model is validated by comparing the results from the model with the experimental results from real crash tests available.
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF RIGID AND FLEXIBLE STRUCTURES OF THE ECCENTRIC PRESSES

Abstract The aim of this paper is to make a comparative study of the static behaviour of the eccentric presses, using the finite elements method, on the rigid structure and on the flexible structure, respectively. The finite elements modelling of the component elements of the presses are done in two ways: node by node link type (rigid structure) or using a linking element spring damper type (flexible structure). On these two structures there is successively applied a number of static analyses, in order to determine the strain of working area and the design of the stiffness graph.
