Is There a Need for a European Institutional Research?

2013

Recent changes in European higher education have accompanied a strong desire and need by national ministries to have comparable data across institutions and a growing recognition from campus leaders that effective planning and decision-making requires reliable institutional data and analyses. This has induced changes and restructuring of duties and roles of administration, administrative staff and academic staff. In North America, internal institutional data analysis is often referred to as institutional research. We examine the roles and functions of institutional research within North America and how the changes within European higher education have created a purpose for institutional res…

The concept of genre within the critical approach to information systems development

2001

Abstract Jurgen Habermas' Critical Social Theory is regarded as a potential approach to information systems development (hereinafter referred to as the critical approach). However, the theoretical promise of this approach has not yet been operationalized in practice. This paper discusses the potential of the genre theory of organizational communication as a conceptual basis for doing so, using two studies that applied genre concepts to analyses and debates on document management. In particular, the paper illustrates the capability of genre concepts in responding to pleas for three types of rationality — communicative, emancipatory, and formal — considered fundamental to any method of inform…

A job resources-based intervention to boost work engagement and team innovativeness during organizational restructuring

2018

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of a job resources-based intervention aimed at proactively increasing work engagement and team innovativeness during organizational restructuring using a person-centered approach. Design/methodology/approach The intervention was conducted in two organizations: two departments served as participants (n=82) and two as controls (n=52). The aim was to first identify sub-groups of employees with different developmental patterns of work engagement, and then to determine whether these sub-groups benefited differently from the intervention with respect to team innovativeness and work engagement. Findings Latent profile analysis …

Understanding stressor-strain relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic : The role of social support, adjustment to remote work, and work-life confl…

2021

This study investigates how the transition to remote work during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic is experienced by employees. We investigate to what extent perceived work stressors relate to psychological strain through perceptions of social support, work-life conflict, and adjustment to remote work. The findings expound the mechanisms underlying psychological strain in the context of sudden organizational change. Specifically, this study shows that both challenge stressors and hindrance stressors have negative impact on adjustment to remote work, whereas hindrance stressors are more strongly negatively related to social support. The study further demonstrates that there is hardly any…

Somatic Symptom Disorder

2016

Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) represents a novel diagnosis that was first introduced in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders . SSD is characterized by at least one persistent somatic symptom accompanied by dysfunctional cognitive, affective, or behavioral reactions. With the exact causes and maintaining factors still being unknown, multidisciplinary theoretical approaches (i.e., biological, psychological, social explanatory) are necessary for understanding the development and maintenance of SSD. Regarding the psychotherapeutic treatment of SSD, modular cognitive behavioral treatment approaches which focus on cognitive restructuring, stress reductio…

Cognitive structuring and placebo effect

2017

Abstract In much of the research concerning the placebo phenomenon, the idea that placebo effects may vary in strength depending on a patient's personal characteristics or traits has been investigated. Findings regarding possible personality differences in placebo response, however, are conflicting and non-systematic. In this article a new theoretical attempt to explain the placebo phenomenon is offered. The authors postulate that the power of the placebo effect is moderated by the extent of use of cognitive structuring, which in turn is influenced by the interaction between the individuals' level of need for cognitive closure and their ability to achieve this state. To test this assumption…

Optoelectronic morphological image processor.

2009

A morphological optoelectronic image processor based on the threshold decomposition concept is described and demonstrated. Binary slices of a gray-scale input image are optically convolved with a binary structuring element of arbitrary size and shape in a noncoherent convolver. The slices are displayed on a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator of 320 × 264 pixels. The kernels are implemented as modifications of the system impulse response. The processor’s convolution patterns are recorded with a CCD camera and fed into a PC by a frame grabber. Subsequent elementary morphological operations are looped. Examples of processing an input image of 256 × 256 pixels and 16 gray levels with kernel…

Ongoing Economic Restructuring in the Wake of the Latest Economic Crisis: A Russian Perspective

2013

Abstract The latest economic crisis has brought into focus long-standing discussions regarding the role played by services in contemporary economies. Whether viewed as a support for the well-established manufacturing sector, or growth engine in its own right, the third economic sector has become a focus point for policy makers worldwide. The paper follows the effects of the crisis on the tertiarization process, with an emphasis on developing economies, where this phenomenon is barely coming of age. The research is centered on the IT market, as this is seen as a comprehensive measure of the maturity and sophistication of the services sector.

Towards a more sustainable process industry: A single case study of restructuring within the Eyde process industry cluster

2018

Due to increased attention on environmental issues, industrial sustainable restructuring is high on the research agenda. The article adds to the literature through an analysis of a restructuring process within a Norwegian process industry cluster. By introducing an analytical framework combining the concepts of entrepreneurial discovery process and path dependency theory, the article offers a deeper understanding of the role of various types of actors in processes of restructuring. The authors categorise the actors as either firm-level entrepreneurs or system-level entrepreneurs on the basis of their motivation. While the former are motivated mainly by firm success, the latter find their mo…
