Mācīšanās rezultātu nozīme profesionālās vidējās izglītības vadībā

2014

ANOTĀCIJA Promocijas darba „Mācīšanās rezultātu nozīme profesionālās vidējās izglītības vadībā” mērķis ir izpētīt mācīšanās rezultātu nozīmi profesionālajā vidējā izglītībā un noskaidrot, kā notiek pāreja uz mācīšanās rezultātos balstītu izglītības procesu. Pētījuma ietvaros tika veikta profesionālās izglītības iestāžu audzēkņu aptauja, skolotāju un darba devēju intervijas. Pētījumā secināts, ka skolotāji un darba devēji neizprot mācīšanās rezultātu lomu profesionālajā izglītībā. Skaidri formulēti mācīšanās rezultāti profesionālās izglītības programmās sniedz precīzu informāciju par mācību procesu un tā iznākumu visām iesaistītajām pusēm, līdz ar to vairāk jauniešu var izvēlēties profesionā…

Factors related to study success in engineering education

2005

Recent studies on student learning in higher education have paid attention to the relationships between characteristics of the learning environment and students' study orientations and study success. The purpose of the present paper is to examine these relationships in university level engineering education. The data were collected from Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland, by means of an Internet survey (n=394). Grade point average, credits per semester and students' qualitative evaluation of their learning outcomes were used as indicators of study success. The findings of the study indicate that students' perceptions of their learning environment were related to their study orie…

Reasoning with paper and pencil: The role of inscriptions in student learning of geometric series

2009

The purpose of this article is to analyse how students use inscriptions as tools for thinking and learning in mathematical problem-solving activities. The empirical context is that of learning about geometric series in a small group setting. What has been analysed is how students made use of inscriptions, self-made as well as those provided by text books and teachers, and the role these inscriptions played in the coordination of students’ learning/communication. Through the use of inscriptions (made on the chalkboard and with paper and pencil), the students externalised their thinking while engaging in mathematical reasoning on the topic of geometric series. The inscriptions were significan…

Opinions from teachers in the Fresno area of Central California regarding the influence of mobile technology on their students’ learning

2013

This paper presents the most relevant results of a study in which opinions of the teachers in the area of Fresno (Central California, USA) about the effects of the integration of mobile devices into the teaching-learning process. Among other objectives, this study has tried to analyze the influence of mobile learning over three very important learning factors: affective-emotional (motivation), ethic-social (social skills) and the cognitive one (cognitive skills). In order to carry out this study, a descriptive methodological approach was adopted, using the survey technique as the most adequate method to collect teachers´ opinions in a relatively fast and precise way. Obtained results show a…

Expanding possibilities: Project work using ICT

2005

www.humantechnology.jyu.fi; One of the main findings from the SITES Module 2 study internationally is the increased use of project work connected to the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in many countries around the world. The Norwegian cases presented in this article support these findings, showing that when teachers and students use ICT in school settings, it is most often part of project work. However, there is a need to analyze to a larger degree the project work using ICT. In this article, project work using ICT is analyzed firstly by studying the changes in learning environment that the technology represents or as a catalyst for physical changes in the spaces in…

Assessment On-the-Fly: Promoting and Collecting Evidence of Learning Through Dialogue

2018

International audience; Inquiry activities generate rich opportunities for STEM learning and for assessment. When teachers pay attention to assessment information collected during the course of learning, they are able to interpret and make decisions about such assessment data in a timely fashion that can drive future planning and support student learning, for example through feedback. This chapter focuses on how classroom talk can generate evidence of learning and how teachers can utilise this to enable assessment to guide inquiry learning. It looks at several vignettes from different countries of on-the-fly interactions in inquiry settings and unpacks how teachers organised, facilitated an…

Leadership and student learning in higher education

2014

Motivated by the many schools the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon has from primary, post primary and recently a university, I as a member of the academic family join many to acquire leadership skills useful to the students. The goal to influence the students academically and morally calls for much investment in leadership. More so, as a young university, older universities can serve as lenses for our leadership insight. Hence, the research is done in a Finnish university. The research intends to have an in-depth knowledge of how various leadership roles in a university influence student learning. A qualitative method of research has been considered for these findings, using the semi-structu…

Australian TESOL Teachers’ Cultural Perceptions of Students

2017

ABSTRACTOver the last decade, research in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) has increasingly focused on the relationship between culture and learning. Researchers such as Kumaravadivelu (2003) have been vocal in their opposition to the practice of cultural stereotyping. In the current study, Holliday’s (2005) model of Culturism was used as a theoretical basis. Six Australian TESOL teachers were interviewed to determine the nature and extent of the cultural stereotypes that they held, particularly as they pertained to specific learning-related behaviours. A qualitative analysis of the data revealed that teachers most often grouped students in terms of natio…

The role of academic buoyancy and emotions in students' learning-related expectations and behaviours in primary school.

2019

Background. Academic buoyancy refers to students’ ability to come through ordinary challenges they face in the academic context, and it can positively contribute to students’ beliefs and behaviours in learning situations. Although buoyancy has been found to be related to positive academic outcomes, previous studies have not examined how buoyancy influences academic emotions in learning situations and how these emotions further affect students’ learning-related expectations and behaviours. \ud Aims. This study investigated to what extent academic buoyancy predicts students’ failure expectations, avoidance behaviour, and task-oriented planning in learning situations, and to what extent academ…
