Development of School and Sport Burnout in Adolescent Student-Athletes : A Longitudinal Mixed-Methods Study

2020

We investigated the development of school and sport burnout in adolescent student‐athletes (N Time 1 = 391, N Time 2 = 373) during their first year in upper secondary school using an embedded mixed‐methods design. The questionnaire‐based data were analyzed with growth mixture modeling and four burnout profiles were identified among student‐athletes. From the found burnout profiles, two were typical for the interviewed subsample of elite athletes (n = 17), that is, burnout risk and non risk profiles. We generated rich descriptions of well‐being and ill‐being, showing that elite athletes in two burnout profiles differed in their experienced demands and resources related to individual and envi…

Ethical Decision-Making by Business Students: Factors of Influence

2013

Business and university stakeholders ask what institutions of higher education are doing to improve student ethics. Our research produces a theoretic model offering insight into a comprehesive process of influences to business student ethical decision making, and its implications for the purposeful moral development of students. Using qualitative, grounded theory methods, we asked 27 business juniors and seniors how the university environment influences their ethical decision making in university life. The resulting model reveals five major categories found within this process: internalized ideals and beliefs, institutional expectations, influential stakeholders, university experiences, and…

Student teachers' ways of experiencing the objective of health education as a school subject: A phenomenographic study

2010

Abstract The aim of this phenomenographic study was to identify student teachers' (N = 20) ways of experiencing health education as a school subject, using semi-structured interviews and essays. The findings indicated that the target phenomenon was discussed through the general objective of the subject in five ways: health education as 1) a context for delivering theoretical knowledge, 2) a channel for providing pupils with practical knowledge and skills to contribute to health-related choices, 3) a means to promote pupils' self-regulative knowledge and independent thinking, 4) a context for personal growth, and 5) a means for developing responsible behavior in society. The hierarchically-o…

Critical aspects of student teachers’ conceptions of learning

2011

Abstract The aim of this phenomenographic study was to discover the educationally critical aspects of learning conceptions among health education student teachers (N = 20). The qualitative data consisted of written essays and semi-structured interviews. Six qualitatively distinctive conceptions of learning could be discerned, namely learning as 1) the reproduction of acquired health knowledge, 2) the application of health knowledge, 3) developing personal meanings on health matters, 4) the transformation of individual thinking, 5) personal growth, and 6) collective meaning-making. These qualitatively distinct categories were reflected through three themes, which embodied critical aspects: t…

Finnish students' multiliteracy profiles

2004

Finnish students' multiliteracy profiles are examined from the perspectives of both traditional printed reading and Internet activities in the light of the data collected as a national option integrated into the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2000 study. After reciting some previous findings on reader profiles as revealed by the initial international analyses of PISA data, the perspective is widened to encompass multiliteracy, which is defined according to the sociocultural view. Based on responses to a survey questionnaire, students were grouped by cluster analysis into six distinct clusters according to the frequency with which they read diverse printed materials an…

Persistence and career choices of female Finnish university physics students

2018

Finland is often seen and admired as an equity and education-focused country. They have policies that champion gender equity and a world-renowned K-12 education system, with students ranking among the top on international metrics. However, little is known on whether these policies and early education experiences support gender equity in postsecondary education and beyond, particularly in fields that struggle to support women. The few studies that exist indicate that despite having aptitude and national policy that seeks to create gender equity, women may not pursue physics careers. As part of a larger project, we present findings from a study on Finnish physics students enrolled in Finnish …
