Fat mass accumulation compromises bone adaptation to load in finnish women: A cross-sectional study spanning three generations

2010

Body weight and lean mass correlate with bone mass, but the relationship between fat mass and bone remains elusive. The study population consisted of 396 girls and 138 premenopausal mothers and 114 postmenopausal grandmothers of these girls. Body composition and tibial length were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and bone traits were determined at the tibia using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) in the girls at the ages of 11.2 ± 0.8, 13.2 ± 0.9, and 18.3 ± 1.0 years and in the mothers (44.7 ± 4.1 years) and grandmothers (70.7 ± 6.3 years). The values of relative bone strength index (RBSI), an index reflecting the ratio of bone strength to the load ap…

Prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma in patients with suspected obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: A cross-sectional analysis of the ESADA database

2015

It has been reported that bronchial asthma is often associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and daytime sleepiness. We analyzed the prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma in 4929 subjects with suspected obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the European Sleep Apnea database (ESADA) Cohort. Patients were studied by respiratory polygraphy (PG: n=1624, 66.6% males) or full polysomnography (PSG: n=3305, 70.4% males), and the clinical characteristics of asthmatic (A) and non-asthmatic (non-A) patients were analyzed according to OSA severity. Significance was at p 2 , p=0.0004) and showed more severe daytime sleepiness (Epworth score: 10.4±5.6 vs 9.5±5.3, p=0.0015) and a trend for worse noctur…

Determinants of high-grade anal intraepithelial lesions in HIV-positive men having sex with men

2018

Background Identifying determinants for histologically proven high-grade anal intraepithelial lesions (hHSIL) in HIV-positive MSM would allow better targeted screening. Methods APACHES is a prospective study of anal HPV and related-lesions in 513 HIV-positive MSM aged ≥35 in six clinics across France. At baseline, participants underwent high resolution anoscopy (HRA) with biopsy of suspicious lesions, preceded by anal swabs for liquid-based cytology, p16/Ki67 immunostaining, and HPV DNA. hHSIL diagnosis was established by histopathological review panel consensus, and determinants assessed by logistic regression. Results Baseline hHSIL prevalence was 10.4% and did not differ significantly by…

P-Wave Indices: Derivation of Reference Values from the Framingham Heart Study

2010

P wave indices constitute an intermediate, phenotype reflecting the impact of ischemic, metabolic and inflammatory insults on atrial electrophysiology and morphology. Measured from the surface electrocardiogram (ECG), they reflect dimensions of atrial depolarization and are modified by conditions that alter atrial conduction, atrial refractoriness, or may result in a proarrhythmic substrate. The P wave indices of duration and dispersion have most commonly been measured. An array of studies have utilized these P wave indices to distinguish subjects with diverse cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular conditions and diseases from healthy reference groups.(1) Computerized software has more recen…

Hypoxic burden and angiogenic factors in patients with myocardial infarction and obstructive sleep apnea

2019

Introduction: The amount and severity of hypoxia have been related to risk of cardiovascular events. Aim: To determine the relationship between nocturnal hypoxic burden and pro- angiogenic factors in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and myocardial infarction (MI). Method: A prospective, observational study in patients with a first acute MI. Eligible patients underwent a polysomnography within 30 days after MI, and a serum blood sample was drawn in order to measure a panel of angiogenic factors by Luminex technology. A hypoxic burden index (HBI) was calculated as the integral area under the desaturation curve (obtained by calculating the integral of the oxygen saturation reduction…
