Core-shell polyacrylate and polystyrene-block-polyacrylate stars
2005
The polymerization of p-(iodomethyl)styrene (PIMS) yields well-defined branched polymers with reactive iodomethyl groups. The branched poly[p-(iodomethyl)styrene] was used as the transfer agent in the iodine mediated radical polymerization of vinyl monomers. The polymerization proceeds in a controlled way and yields polystyrene and poly(t-butyl acrylate) star polymers with reactive groups at the end of their arms. Polymers so obtained were also used to prepare stars with block copolymer arms: polystyrene-block-poly(t-butyl acrylate). The characterization of star structures was performed by NMR and gel permeation chromatography with absolute molar mass detection (MALLS). Preliminary characte…
Endgruppenuntersuchungen an isotaktischen Polystyrolen. VII. Mitt.
Epoxidation of Olefins with a Silica-Supported Peracid
2012
Anhydrous [2-percarboxyethyl] functionalized silica (2a) is an advantageous oxidant for performing the epoxidation of olefins 1. Epoxides 3 do not undergo the ring-opening reactions catalyzed by the acidic silica surface, except for particularly activated cases such as styrene oxide. The hydrophilic and acidic character of the silica surface does not interfere with the directing effects exerted by allylic H-bond acceptor substituents. The alkenes 1 carrying hydroxyl groups react with silica-supported peracid 2a faster than unsubstituted alkenes, thus reversing the trend known for reactions with soluble peracids. These results are attributed to the H-bond interactions of substrate 1 with the…
Comparison of an indirect format ELISA on modified graphite and polystyrene surfaces against triazines.
2006
An indirect format enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) on graphite rods (Ø 0.8 mm x 20 mm) and, for comparison, on microtiter plates has been developed against terbuthylazine. For this purpose, a series of 2-aminoalkyl-4-chloro-6-terbuthyl-s-triazine-2,6- diamine ELISA haptens with alkyl spacer lengths of 2, 4, 6, and 8 CH2 groups has been synthesized. The graphite rods or the microtiter plates were covered by a polymerized glutaraldehyde network, and the ELISA haptens have been coupled by imino coupling to the free aldehyde groups of that network. ε-Aminocaproic acid has been used as an agent to block unspecific binding sites. The ELISA was run in a competitive mode, where the immob…
1991
Tracer diffusion coefficients D* of both components were measured in mixtures of polystyrene (PS) and polymethylstyrene (PMS), a random copolymer from 60 wt.-% of m-methylstyrene and 40 wt.-% of p-methylstyrene. The results are interpreted in terms of the free-volume theory which yields master curves even for “asymmetric” mixtures of oligomer and polymer chains, if D* is drawn versus the distance from the glass transition temperature, T–Tg. Whereas D* was measured by the forced Rayleigh scattering technique, we also studied photon correlation spectroscopy in these mixtures and observed “slow modes” with decay constants that correspond to diffusion coefficients 2–3 decades smaller than the i…
Extruded Expanded Polystyrene Sheets Coated by TiO2 as New Photocatalitic Materials for Foodstuffs Packaging
2012
Nanostructured, photoactive anatase TiO2 sol prepared under very mild conditions using titanium tetraisopropoxide as the precursor is used to functionalise extruded expanded polystyrene (XPS) sheets by spray-coating resulting in stable and active materials functionalised by TiO2 nanoparticles. Photocatalytic tests of these sheets performed in a batch reactor in gas-solid system under UV irradiation show their successful activity in degrading probe molecules (2-propanol, trimethylamine and ethene). Raman spectra ensure the deposition of TiO2 as crystalline anatase phase on the polymer surface. The presence of TiO2 with respect to polymer surface can be observed in SEM images coupled to EDAX …
Polyelectrolytes: Intrinsic Viscosities in the Absence and in the Presence of Salt
2008
Intrinsic viscosities were determined at 25 °C for 10 samples of narrowly distributed sodium polystyrene sulfonate (the molecular weights M ranging from 0.9 to 1000 kg/mol) in pure water and in aqueous solutions containing 0.9 wt % NaCl from the slope of ln ηrel versus polymer concentration. In the middle range of M, the [η] values are in the former case almost 2 orders of magnitude larger than in the latter case. In the absence of salt, the plot of log [η] as a function of log M exhibits a sigmoidal shape, which can be approximated within the interval 3 < M (in kg mol-1) < 30 by log[η] = −0.17 + 2.1 log M. In the presence of salt, the following relation holds true in the entire regime: lo…
Cyclodextrins in polymer synthesis: photocrosslinkable films via free radical copolymerization of methylated β-cyclodextrin-complexed styrene with so…
2001
The copolymerization of a methylated-β-cyclodextrin (m-β-CD) 1:1 host-guest compound of styrene (1a) with various molar ratios of sodium 4-(acrylamido)-phenyldiazosulfonate (2) is described. The copolymerization of complex 1a with 2 was carried out in water with 2,2′-azobis(N,N′-dimethyleneisobutyramidine)-dihydrochloride as the free radical initiator at 40°C. Depending on the amount of 2 incorporated in the copolymer, water- or DMF-soluble copolymers of high molar mass were obtained. Irradiation of the copolymers with UV light in solution resulted in rapid decomposition of the azo chromophore, and irradiation of the polymers as films led to crosslinking and thus to insolubility.
Structural Characterization of Glycoconjugate Polystyrene in Aqueous Solution
1999
Maltopentaose-carrying polystyrene was synthesized by the homopolymerization of vinylbenzyl maltopentaose amide. Resulted amphiphilc polymacromonomer was dissolved in 0.1 M urea aqueous solution, and its structure was characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering and molecular modeling. Maltopentaose-carrying polystyrene polymacromonomer was found to be represented by a molecular bottlebrush, composed of a large helix of polystyrene backbone and maltopentaose brushes. The molecular bottlebrush seems to be distributed randomly or many even be broken once or twice in segments with no apparent intersegmental spatial correlation. A large helix of polystyrene backbone is formed by a random seque…
Polyelectrolyte Complexes: Phase Diagram and Intrinsic Viscosities of the System Water/Poly(2-vinylpyridinium-Br)/Poly(styrene sulfonate-Na)
2012
In contrast to all earlier work on that subject, measurements are performed at high dilution up to total polymer concentrations wpol of 0.5 wt%. Aqueous solutions of poly(2-vinylpyridinium-Br) and of poly(styrene sulfonate-Na) are only fully miscible if wpol < 0.02 wt%. Decomposition into two liquid phases is observed upon an increase in wpol, where the extension of the miscibility gap is considerably larger at 60 than at 25 °C. Viscosity measurements demonstrate that the formation of the polyelectrolyte complexes may take hours. The intrinsic viscosity of the polyanion turns out to be 20 times larger than that of the polycation and to be much more sensitive toward the addition of extra sal…
