Diagnosis of sibling species of Drosophila involved in the colonization of North America by D. subobscura

To determine the effects of the recent colonization of the west coast of North America by the Palaearctic species Drosophila subobscura on the dynamics of the Drosophila populations, the sibling species D. athabasca and D. azteca must be classified unambiguously. We have characterized these two species using three molecular techniques: allozymes, mtDNA and RAPDs. All three techniques allow the classification of any individual as belonging to either species. The study of five localities in northern California and southern Oregon show that the area of overlap is larger than previously described.
Phylogeny of the Drosophila obscura species group deduced from mitochondrial DNA sequences

Approximately 2 kb corresponding to different regions of the mtDNA of 14 different species of the obscura group of Drosophila have been sequenced. In spite of the uncertainties arising in the phylogenetic reconstruction due to a restrictive selection toward a high mtDNA A+T content, all the phylogenetic analysis carried out clearly indicate that the obscura group is formed by, at least, four well-defined lineages that would have appeared as the consequence of a rapid phyletic radiation. The Origin, Location, and Projections of the Embryonic Abdominal Motorneurons ofDrosophila

We have used a retrograde labeling technique to identify motorneurons for each of the 30 body wall muscles of an abdominal hemisegment in the late stage 16Drosophilaembryo. Each motorneuron has a characteristic cell body position, dendritic arborization, and axonal projection. In addition, we have determined the neuroblasts of origin for most of the motorneurons we describe. Orthotrichum anodon (Orthotrichaceae), a new species from California, and its relationships to otherOrthotrichawith puckered capsule mouths

A new Orthotrichum species, O. anodon F. Lara, Garilleti & Mazimpaka, is described. The new taxon is included in subgenus Pulchella (Schimp.) Vitt, and is characterised by its immersed, cylindrical capsules, with eight short exothecial bands that constrict the capsule mouth when dry; the lack of exostome teeth; the endostome having 16 hyaline and papillose segments; and the leaves lingulate to ovate lanceolate, with obtuse apices. Its distinction from and relationships with similar species within the genus, are discussed.
In situ localization of the Antennapedia gene on the chromosomes of nine Drosophila species of the obscura group.

The homeotic Antennapedia gene, cloned from the genomic DNA of D. subobscura, was localized on the polytene chromosomes of nine species of the Drosophila obscura group. In all of them, the probe used hybridized on chromosomes equivalent to the E element of Muller's terminology. These results are consistent with the idea that single copy genes do not move around the genome and that chromosomal elements have conserved their genetic identity during evolution.

Abstract Background Sequences homologous to the gypsy retroelement from Drosophila melanogaster are widely distributed among drosophilids. The structure of gypsy includes an open reading frame resembling the retroviral gene env, which is responsible for the infectious properties of retroviruses. Results In this study we report molecular and phylogeny analysis of the complete env gene from ten species of the obscura group of the genus Drosophila and one species from the genus Scaptomyza. Conclusion The results indicate that in most cases env sequences could produce a functional Env protein and therefore maintain the infectious capability of gypsy in these species.
Distribution of the bilbo Non-LTR Retrotransposon in Drosophilidae and its Evolution in the Drosophila obscura Species Group

The bilbo element is a non-LTR retrotransposon isolated from Drosophila subobscura. We conducted a distribution survey by Southern blot for 52 species of the family Drosophilidae, mainly from the obscura and melanogaster groups. Most of the analyzed species bear sequences homologous to bilbo from D. subobscura. In the obscura group, species from the same species subgroup also share similar Southern blot patterns. To investigate the phylogenetic relationship among these elements, we analyzed eight copies of a short sequence of the element from several species of the obscura group.
