Les deux faces – objective/subjective – de la mobilité sociale

2006

06062; National audience; How does objective social mobility, traditionally measured with tables of mobility drawn up by sociologists, relate to feelings about mobility, i.e., how individuals perceive, explain and appraise their social trajectory? Using a question from a survey (Insee's Formation, qualification professionnelle), subjective mobility was statistically evaluated so as to bring the two approaches to mobility together and measure the (considerable) frequency of deviations. Subjective mobility was then analyzed qualitatively on the basis of interviews conducted with respondents in the same survey. This helps us account for deviations and identify the bundle of parameters that peo…

Sensibility and taste alterations after impacted lower third molar extractions. A prospective cohort study

2012

Objectives: To determine the incidence, severity and duration of lingual tactile and gustatory function impairments after lower third molar removal. Study Design: Prospective cohort study with intra-subject measures of 16 patients undergoing lower third molar extractions. Sensibility and gustatory functions were evaluated in each subject preoperatively, one week and one month after the extraction, using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments and 5 different concentrations of NaCl, respectively. Additionally, all patients filled a questionnaire to assess subjective perceptions. Results: Although patients did not perceive any sensibility impairments, a statistically significant decrease was detected …

The effects of a startle on awareness of action

2003

The execution of a ballistic movement within a reaction time task paradigm is significantly speeded up when an unexpected startling auditory stimulus (SAS) is delivered together with the imperative signal. Using Libet's clock, we investigated whether acceleration involves also the subjective appraisal of the time of task execution. In trials containing the SAS, reaction time shortened to 68.7% of control values. However, subjective judgment of task execution remained a similar time with respect to the imperative signal as in control trials. The dissociation between task execution and its subjective perception indicates the existence of separate circuits for action execution and action aware…

Effects of mat characteristics on plantar pressure patterns and perceived mat properties during landing in gymnastics.

2011

Shock absorption and stability during landings is provided by both, gymnast ability and mat properties. The aims of this study were to determine the influence of different mat constructions on their energy absorption and stability capabilities, and to analyse how these properties affect gymnast's plantar pressures as well as subjective mat perception during landing. Six mats were tested using a standard mechanical drop test. In addition, plantar pressures and subjective perception during landing were obtained from 15 expert gymnasts. The different mats influenced plantar pressures and gymnasts' subjective perception during landing of gymnasts. Significant correlations between plantar pressu…

Wiki-mediated Collaborative Writing in Teacher Education - Assessing Three Years of Experiences and Influencing Factors

2014

Wikis have been reported as tools that promote collaborative writing in educational settings. Examples of wikis in teacher education are group projects, glossary creation, teacher evaluation, and document review. However, in spite of studies that report on successful stories, the claim that wikis support collaborative writing has not yet been firmly confirmed. Most studies are limited to participants’ subjective perceptions, and do not take into account influencing factors, or the relationships between wikis and the learning environment. In this paper, students’ collaborative writing activities over a period of three years are investigated using a taxonomy of action categories and the w…

Using Wikis to Evaluate Students’ Contributions to Collaborative Writing in Teacher Education

2015

Wikis as collaboration tools may serve various purposes in teacher education such as group project, glossary creation, teacher evaluation, and document review. However, despite their potentialities for collaboration, it is still difficult to determine the extent to which students contribute to collaborative writing. Research studies are mostly perception-based and limited to participants’ subjective views. Recently, a growing number of research studies have used the data log of the wiki that enables the retrieval of students’ contributions to collaborative writing. The data log is inherently more reliable than participants’ subjective perceptions to explore collaborative writing activities …

On the relations between audio features and room acoustic parameters of auralizations

2013

The usual parameters in room acoustics are used to quantify the acoustic characteristics of rooms and their relation to the subjective perception of transmitted signals. Audio features (calculated with MIRToolbox) have been designed to study the relationships between the characteristics of musical audio files and their subjective perception. Both musical characteristics and acoustic parameters are oriented towards acoustic perception. By using auralizations with calibrated models of auditoriums and tools from the MIRtoolbox it is possible to jointly work with the calculation of audio features and room parameters. In this work, the statistical correlations between C80, STI, D50, EDT, RT and …

Automatic speech recognition in the booth

2020

Abstract Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) has been proposed as a means to enhance state-of-the-art computer-assisted interpreting (CAI) tools and to allow machine-learning techniques to enter the workflow of professional interpreters. In this article, we test the usefulness of real-time transcription with number highlighting of a source speech for simultaneous interpreting using InterpretBank ASR. The system’s precision is high (96%) and its latency low enough to fit interpreters’ ear–voice span (EVS). We evaluate the potential benefits among first-time users of this technology by applying an error matrix and by investigating the users’ subjective perceptions through a questionnaire. The …

The Transition from Middle School to High School: The Mediating Role of Perceived Peer Support in the Relationship between Family Functioning and Sch…

2018

The study focused on the transition from middle school to high school and aimed to verify the mediating role that perceived peer support may play in the relationship between family functioning in middle school and school satisfaction in high school. In middle school (Wave 1), participants were 208 adolescents (106 boys and 102 girls) aged 12–13 years (M = 12.56; SD = .61), attending the last classes of two middle public schools located in Italy. One year later (Wave 2), 155 adolescents (76 boys and 79 girls) participated again in the study when they attended the first classes of high school (M = 13.91; SD = .75). Participants completed the Italian Version of Family Assessment Device and the…

Immediate Effects of Vibration Transmitted to the Hand

1981

Summary Three different research projects have been accomplished on the problems: biomechanical behaviour of the hand-arm-system; subjective sensation; physiological changes. Some of the main results were:—the wrist and—with smaller amplifications—the elbow show resonances at low vibration frequencies (10–20 Hz);—with constant acceleration subjective perception decreases with increasing frequency;—application of static grip force—without vibration—causes significant reduction of the skin temperature, which under vibration stress remains at the same lowered level.
