Overcoming Neuroessentialism. Towards an Integral Notion of Subjectivity for Moral Neuroeducation

2019

The aim of this chapter is to underscore a series of significant philosophical flaws encountered in current research devoted to neuroscience and neuroethics, and furthermore to challenge the neuroessentialist paradigm that locates subjectivity within the confines of the brain. Instead I argue for an integral concept of the self that is based within the body, and whose plural character is permeated with values, emotions and feelings, while also being situated within the community of the lifeworld. Research on moral neuroeducation, and neuroscience in general, should develop a more holistic approach towards subjectivity and look at the person as a psychophysical and social being, with a multi…

Ethics and Politics in Spanish Universities. The research assessment as a Technology of Subjectivity

2013

Through our work, we seek to analyse critically the transformation of educational subjectivities produced by discourses and practices within the framework of the current reform process that Spanish universities are undergoing. This transformation is linked to neoliberal government rationales , but we would like to describe it taking into account the local coordination modalities which characterize the context of Spanish universities. To do so, we focus on a technology which structures and feeds on discourses and key practices in the reform process: the six-year research period (sexennium). As a technology of subjectivity , it represents a system of thought involved in the development of mor…

Human Soul, Body and Life Horizons

There are two directions characteristic for the soul – upward and downward. Life horizons are closely connected with life forms, styles of living. It has been described in rather different cultures including post-modern culture. This paper deals with A.-T. Tymieniecka’s ideas about the New Enlightenment and critique of too narrow an explanation of human subjectivity and body and discusses the need for balance between soul’s directions and decreasing of materialistic, consumerism life form, orientations to …

Qualitative Studies of Young People’s Quality of Life in Urban and Rural Areas

2015

The chapter presents a qualitative research conducted with young people from different communities: rural and urban. We sought to recognize and define dimensions that promote life satisfaction in the community, young people perceived in these two geographical areas. While the quality of life refers to both social welfare and psychological well-being, qualitative studies are particularly focused on the latter, as they facilitate the discovery of feelings, perceptions, opinions and emotions about the reality of their quality of life, being these that constitute the research itself, so that subjectivity and inter subjectivity in qualitative methodology is conceived as the ultimate means and to…

The Use of Landscape Indicators in Environmental Assessment

2016

A fundamental characteristic of the Strategic Environmental Assessment procedure is the use of indicator-like tools for measuring effects generated by plans and programmes that affect the environment and landscape. There are many kinds of indicator categories, but this chapter focuses attention on those related specifically to the landscape. Measuring many aspects of reality, by indicators, is easy today—but for landscape and its cultural aspects, the same fails to apply because, differently from water, air, soil and all the biotic and abiotic elements, technicians must consider variables in which the degree of subjectivity is very high. In spite of this reflection, Strategic Environmental …

Intersubjective Parameters of the Life Processes

2002

The problem of the formation of community, communication, mutual understanding is one of the principal themes in contemporary philosophy. The urgency of the problem has probably sharpened due to the openly onesided tendencies of liberalism, individualism, the philosophy of subjectivity and the egology reigning in the last centuries. These philosophies focus on the self-sufficient individual, individual consciousness, Ego, the structures of mind, body, and consider that the basis of human community lies in the inner structures of a self-sufficient individual. The philosophy of subjectivity turns to man himself in the first place and then attempts to show the capacities (understanding, histor…

The Feast of Life or the Feast of Reason – Kierkegaard Versus Plato

2011

The article consists of three sections. The first section “Dialogue at the intersection of literature and philosophy” analyzes the fundamental differences between the two modes of human intellectual activity – philosophy and literature on the basis of Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka’s philosophy. Nevertheless, the intersection is possible in the form of dialogue. The second chapter “Negative existential maeutics” is dedicated to Kierkegaard’s conception of existential maeutics in comparison with the Socratic maeutics. The stress is put upon its negative characteristics – the distance, the interruption, the situation of existential shock. These restrictions are necessary to allow the participants’ s…

Discursive construction of subjectivity in English: when travellers complain through their reviews in TripAdvisor

2017
