On the basis of the study of c. 1100 herbarium specimens, field observations and molecular (ITS, AFLPs) evidence, Primula sect. The taxonomy, distribution and ecology of the polymorphic Capparis spinosa L. in Sicily are discussed. C. spinosa subsp. rupeslris (Sibth. & Sm.) Nyman , a leathery-Ieaved, pendulous-branched shrub is widespread on carbonate, volcanic and gypsaceous outcrops. Subsp. spinosa, a thorny chamaephyte or hemicryptophyte with creeping branches, is mainly distributed in south-central parts of Sicily, on clay and natric soils under xerophilous conditions. The Arabidopsis arenosa complex is closely related to the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Species and subspecies in the complex are mainly biennial, predominantly outcrossing, herbaceous, and with a distribution range covering most parts of latitudes and the eastern reaches of Europe. In Salicornia, morphology does not provide reliable diagnostic characters supporting the true extent of evolutionary divergence in the genus, and species concepts have been challenged by molecular analyses. Here, we report the results of an analysis of 91 accessions of the S. meyeriana complex from South Africa and Namibia using the measurements of 38 morphological traits and external transcribed spacer (ETS) sequence data. Summary • A survey of chloroplast DNA variation in the circumarctic-alpine plant, Saxifraga oppositifolia, has resolved two highly divergent cpDNA lineages with geographically widespread and mainly allopatric distributions that are largely concordant with those of two subspecies, that is, subspp. oppositifolia and glandulisepala.
