Abstract HPLC/UV–VIS diode array and HPLC/MS techniques were successfully applied to the analysis of sulfonated molecules present in samples coming from the photocatalytic degradation of the azo dye indicator, methyl orange. The substrate was chosen as a simple model for the study of reactions involving the more complex commercial products used for the dyeing of textile fibers. Unexpected MS fragmentation path was observed, due to the very stable methyl orange molecular structure. Invasive Observation by Atomic Force Microscope of a Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayer of Gramicidin

The properties of gramicidin, a linear antibiotic polypeptide of 15 amino acids, have been studied at the air-water interface. Analysis of the pressure-area isotherm is not able to conclude about the conformational behavior of gramicidin in the monolayer. Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of gramicidin layers onto a mica substrate has been developed for atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations. At high pressure of deposition, the gramicidin monolayer is composed of dimers perpendicular to the surface. The possibility of removing the half upper part of this dimer monolayer with the AFM tip is more in favor of a structure of single-stranded helical dimers.

A CEMS/AES study of the passivation of iron

The passivation of iron and steel (DIN 1623) was studied by integral and depth selective conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Thickness and phase composition of the passive layer formed in sulphate solution and in a phosphate buffer were determined in dependence on the anodic potential and the duration of the passivating procedure. The experimental results lead to the conclusion that not the whole oxidic layer is responsible for the passivity but only a very thin intermediate layer formed between the cubic substrate and the rhombic oxide (γ-FeOOH) cover.

Abstract Molydenum has been deposited at room temperature on (110) TiO2 surfaces with different stoichiometries, roughnesses and crystallinities. Whatever the substrate preparation is, in-situ Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies as well as ex-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and reflexion high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) studies reveal a Stranski–Krastanov growth mode: the completion of three monolayers followed by islands growth is observed in every case. The influence of thin hard coatings on frictional behaviour in the orthogonal cutting process

New knowledge about the tribological response deriving from the interaction of the substrate/coating-chip system, with special attention to the orthogonal cutting process when chatter-free end turning using natural contact tools, is developed. In order to evaluate the frictional behaviour of this process under modified contact conditions, experimental investigations including the contact temperature, the contact loads, friction and the frictional heat flux per unit area were carried out. Abstract The combined effect of ultrasounds and ionic liquids was used to perform the synthesis of aryl azides by nucleophilic aromatic substitution in ionic liquid/[1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium][N 3 ] binary mixtures. The ultrasounds efficiency was analyzed as a function of the substrate and of the ionic liquid structure. In the first case, both 6π and 10π electrons aryl halides were considered. As far as the ionic liquid structure is concerned, both aromatic and aliphatic ionic liquids were taken into account. A generic approach for heterogeneous surface modification of cellulosic materials in aqueous medium, applicable for a wide range of functionalizations, is presented. In the first step, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) modified with azide or alkyne functionality, was adsorbed on a cellulosic substrate, thus, providing reactive sites for azide–alkyne cycloaddition click reactions. In the second step, functional units with complementary click units were reacted on the cellulose surface, coated by the click-modified CMC. Photocatalytic oxidation mechanism of benzonitrile in aqueous suspensions of titanium dioxide

Abstract The photocatalytic oxidation of benzonitrile was carried out in aqueous suspensions (pH 11) of commercial polycrystalline TiO 2 (Merck and Degussa P25) irradiated by ultraviolet light. The rate of decomposition was dependent on the concentration of benzonitrile and followed a pseudo-first order kinetics. The complete mineralization of a 0.70 mM benzonitrile solution was achieved in ca. 8 h by using TiO 2 Degussa P25, whereas the substrate was only partially mineralized even after 14 h of irradiation in the presence of TiO 2 Merck.
