Stress-induced cytological and chemical adaptations in Cupressus plants from an urban area of Palermo (Italy)
2004
We studied stress-induced cytological and chemical adaptations in Cupressus pollens and needles from the area of Palermo (Sicily, Italy), in polluted and control sites (unpolluted) of urban and suburban areas. Pollen and needle chemical composition were investigated to provide an indicator of contamination of the trees, which were also examined structurally throughout one year. The concentration of particulate with lead was found to be significantly higher in plants at the polluted traffic site. Lead is one of the worst particulate pollutants in cities, especially in the winter season. In trees from the polluted site, all structural analysis revealed displasies. Structural changes, observed…
Può il restauro essere d'aiuto alle periferie?
2012
The discipline of restoration, besides solving the problems of conservation according to its methodology integrates with other disciplines in order to create those processes of connection, physical and communication, that are essential to re-introduce the suburbs in the formative processes of the city they belong to. Thus new relationships with the surrounding pre-existences and the introduction of new uses functional to the whole city, may be useful devices.
Palermo, quartieri e periferie: “azioni guida” nel palinsesto urbano
2012
The method of choice for the local coordination work led by the Palermo unit interpreted the common requests for the National PRIN on “the upgrading and rehabilitation of the public housing sector”, focusing its attention on the multiple scenarios and using the architectural project as a powerful “working tool”. From the project examination on the specific cases and the theories put forward by the group of designers – considering the different design approaches – it seems possible to extrapolate some recurring actions – on the basis of the results achieved – which might be considered as a reference structure for the definition of those “guidelines” representing the final target of the resea…
The Importance of Participation in Regeneration of Peripheral Urban Spaces: the Experience of “Serpentone Reload”
2015
Suburbs are often very contradictory places. Despite great part of urban population live there, these parts of cities are mostly considered as degradation places. The topic of suburbs regeneration is relevant today. Nevertheless, often expensive interventions implemented by local authorities fail to regenerate their public spaces, increasing the degradation condition. This paper presents the experience of “Serpentone reload”, a workshop based on participatory reactivation of abandoned or underused spaces and buildings in "Cocuzzo/Serpentone" neighbourhood in Potenza (Basilicata, Italy). The workshop particularly focused on the reuse of the "Ship", an underground building with a park coverag…

In-Between ‘Smart’ Urban Growth and ‘Sluggish’ Rural Development? Reframing Population Dynamics in Greece, 1940–2019
2020
Multifaceted demographic dynamics have shaped population growth in Mediterranean Europe, reflecting a metropolitan cycle from urbanization to re-urbanization. To assess the distinctive impact of economic downturns on population dynamics, the present study illustrates the results of an exploratory analysis that assesses urban expansion and rural decline at various temporal scales in Greece, a peripheral country in southeastern Europe. Statistical analysis based on multivariate exploratory techniques outlined the persistent increase of regional populations, evidencing the distinctive role of agglomeration/scale with urbanization and early suburbanization phases (1940&ndash
Changes in the Intra-Metropolitan Location of Producer Services in Ile-de-France (1978-1997) : do information technologies promote a more dispersed s…
2003
Because of their intensive need for face-to-face contacts, producer services have, historically, been found at the core o f CBDs. However, it has been suggested that advances in information technologies could lead to the erosion o f the CBD’s economic base, rendering face-to-face contacts obsolete and enabling producer services to suburbanize. Although a considerable amount o f empirical work has been done on the suburbanization o f these activities in North-America, the same is not true of France. In this paper, we adopt an original methodology to study the role played by face-to-face contacts in the spatial distribution of producer services in the Ile-de-France region between 1978 and 199…
Changes in Spatial and Sectoral Patterns of Employment in Ile-de-France, 1978-97
2006
This paper investigates the spatial distribution of employment in the region of Ile-de-France in 1978 and 1997. Exploratory spatial data analysis is used to identify employment centres and a sectoral analysis of the central business district (CBD) and sub-centres is performed. The results highlight a process of suburbanisation of employment in Ile-de-France between 1978 and 1997. A more polarised space emerges in 1997 than in 1978, with several employment centres specialised in different activities. Moreover, even if the spatial influence of the CBD declines over the study period, the CBD maintains its economic leadership by concentrating a large variety of high-order producer services.

Delineation of the boundary of an urban agglomeration: evidence from Riga, Latvia
2019
AbstractStatistical, morphological and functional approaches have long been used to delineate spatial boundaries of urban agglomerations. This research uses data from the Central Statistical Bureau and the State Revenue Service. The results indicate that morphological and functional approaches are essential when defining the agglomeration, however the outcomes are different. The most relevant consistency was observed in the territorial units adjoining the city of Riga due to the fact that they have a common labour market with Riga and share a strong functional linkage. However, the spatial extent based on the morphological approach confirms and highlights the effects of urban sprawl.
