Employment Density in Ile-de-France: Evidence from Local Regressions
2009
In recent decades, cities have experienced a particularly intense phase of urban sprawl. Urban growth has been characterized by the spatial concentration of population in urban areas and the concomitant extension of those urban areas (Nechyba and Walsh 2004). Urban sprawl has also been accompanied by major reorganizations of urban areas with regard to the location choices of households and firms. More specifically, most cities in developed countries have experienced several waves of suburbanization of economic activities: “an economic definition of suburbanization is a reduction in the fraction of a metropolitan area’s population or employment that is located in the central city (correspond…
Suburban Fertility and Metropolitan Cycles: Insights from European Cities
2021
Being largely diversified along the urban–rural gradient, fertility gaps have demonstrated to fuel metropolitan expansion, contributing to natural population growth and social change. In this direction, population dynamics and economic transformations have continuously shaped urban cycles in Europe. Assuming suburban fertility to be a relevant engine of metropolitan growth, the present study investigates and discusses the intrinsic relationship between fertility transitions and urban expansion, focusing on European metropolitan regions. An average crude birth rate referring to the last decade (2013–2018) was estimated from official statistics at 671 Functional Urban Areas (FUAs, Eurostat Ur…
“Ricomincio da tre”: continuare la città recente a partire da una scuola d’infanzia
2020
In the academic year 2015-2016, at the University of Palermo, a third-year architectural design course was dedicated to the theme of the kindergarten in Villaggio Peruzzo (Agrigento). Villaggio Peruzzo is an urban unit within an extensive system between the Valley of the Temples and San Leone; it is located near the confluence of the two rivers (S. Anna and San Biagio) in the Canale di San Leone (ancient Greek port); it is surrounded by farmland and made of public residential blocks around a square on which a church rises. Behind the parish, a school complex will be built. It is an opportunity to explore a settlement where a public neighbourhood, detached houses, agricultural fields shape a…
Exploring the deviations from scale-invariance of spatial distributions of buildings using a Geographically Weighted Fractal Analysis. An application…
2018
In the early twentieth century a handful of French geographers and historians famously suggested that mainland France comprised two agrarian systems: enclosed field systems with scattered settlements in the central and western France, and openfield systems with grouped settlements in eastern France. This division between grouped and scattered settlements can still be found on the outskirts of urban areas. The objective of this paper is to determine whether the shape of urban areas varies with the type of built patterns in their periphery. To this end, we identify and characterise the local and global deviations from scale-invariance of built patterns in metropolitan France. We propose a new…

Le non-public à l'oeuvre. Ethnographie d'une sortie au musée du Quai Branly avec le centre social
2014
Photographic exhibitions are organized today outside to attract those who do not attend museums and galleries. I studied the "non-public" (Ancel & Pessin, 2004) : the absents, those to whom they are intended, but that do not attend. What are the factors hindering the encounter with the works despite their urban exposure mode ? The article seeks to explore representations of culture that are forged by the respondents (migrants from popular classes) during outings organized by a social center. Using a case study (a visit to the Musée du Quai Branly), it shows how certain non-public meetings with high culture, far from abolishing the symbolic distance, on the contrary contribute to anchor or t…
La mise en image du « problème des banlieues » au prisme de la division du travail journalistique
2008
Our article aims to reconstitute the image- and speech-making process regarding the “suburbs” through the filming of a documentary on “how young people on the high-rise estates perceive the war in Iraq”. We followed the post-shooting process and the comments and remarks made during the editing for national TV in March 2003. The reconstitution of the different phases of production (especially the impact of how the work involved was split up between those in editorial positions and the journalists “allotted” to the suburbs) reveals a mode whereby successive forms of categorisation are applied to the young people interviewed and what they say, so as to embody a so-called “point of view from th…
