The psychology of streaming : exploring music listeners’ motivations to favour access over ownership

2016

Digital streaming represents the most radical development in the way we experience music since the invention of automatic playback technologies two centuries ago. From zero ownership and on-demand access to a virtually limitless library of music via a disconnected financial transaction, streaming services challenge previous conceptions of how music is defined, experienced and consumed. This paper explores streaming from a psychological perspective, and highlights a range of factors that motivate users to favour access over ownership. From removal of responsibilities of ownership to enhanced discovery, nostalgia-fulfilment to augmented emotional engagement, adoption of access-based consumpti…

The access and success in the different higher education tracks in France for female and male youths of North African backgrounds

2016

International audience; Despite their preference for selective vocational programmes, many youths of North African backgrounds, including female youths, are diverted toward academic university programmes. To what extent do successful or unsuccessful applications to a chosen programme determine higher education outcomes and transition to work, particularly for female North African youths? Our results show that unemployment is higher for drop-outs for both North African men and women compared to their French counterparts.

Vertaileva tutkimus nais- ja miesjohtajien uramenestyksestä liikunta-alalla

2018

The purpose of this study is to describe and compare upper-level sport managers’ career success, career success variables and the associations between them. The perspective of gender equality is used. Three indicators of objective and subjective career success are used: pay (objective), career success satisfaction, and the balance between work and family/private life (subjective). The specific variables are divided into five different categories: sociodemographic, human capital, social support, organisational, and sports specific. The data (n=329) for this quantitative cross- sectional study were collected by means of an internet questionnaire sent out to public and non-governmental sports …

Teaching practices in first-year university : description and analysis of their implications on student studies

2014

In France, there is little research on university teaching and focusing specifically on teaching practices. This present research aims to explore this concept in two different ways. The first part focuses on the description of the practices implemented by teachers during first-year university lectures. Using in situ observation of lecture practices of 49 teachers from five programmes, Administration, Sociology, Psychology and English, we first show that teachers’ practices mostly rely on traditional methods as defined by Bru (2006). However, we show a variety of practices among teachers. The second part of this research updates our knowledge of the implications of these practices on student…

Natural acidification changes the timing and rate of succession, alters community structure, and increases homogeneity in marine biofouling communiti…

2017

Ocean acidification may have far-reaching consequences for marine community and ecosystem dynamics, but its full impacts remain poorly understood due to the difficulty of manipulating pCO2 at the ecosystem level to mimic realistic fluctuations that occur on a number of different timescales. It is especially unclear how quickly communities at various stages of development respond to intermediate-scale pCO2 change and, if high pCO2 is relieved mid-succession, whether past acidification effects persist, are reversed by alleviation of pCO2 stress, or are worsened by departures from prior high pCO2 conditions to which organisms had acclimatized. Here, we used reciprocal transplant experiments al…

Personality predicts social dominance in female zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata, in a feeding context.

2011

6 pages; International audience; Although personality has been defined as a suite of correlated behaviours, most studies of animal personality actually consider correlations between a few traits. We examined the repeatability and correlational structure of five potential personality traits (activity, neophobia, exploratory tendencies, risk-taking behaviour and obstinacy), in female zebra finches. In addition, we assessed to what extent personality influenced social dominance in a feeding context in this gregarious species. All personality traits were found to be highly repeatable within individuals. In addition, except for obstinacy, all of them were related to each other, thus defining a b…

Leadership and spirituality in business and public administration: a cross-cultural empirical study comparing the USA and France

2013

National audience; In this discussion we build on previous work on the role of ethics in shaping the behaviour of leaders in business and public administration to investigate the relationship between leadership spirituality, the environment springing from such leadership, and the resulting followers’ attributions of leader effectiveness in the USA and France. Survey data collected from the USA and France were used to test a composite construct of spiritual leadership including (a) accountability, (b) rationality, and (c) honesty. The results of hypothesis tested suggest followers’ attributions of leaders’ positive outcomes increase in proportion with increases in leader’s spirituality. Thes…

Intestinal distribution and fecundity of two species ofDiplostomumparasites in definitive hosts

2005

This paper investigated the intestinal distribution and fecundity of 2 species ofDiplostomumparasites,D. spathaceumandD. pseudospathaceum, in 2 species of definitive hosts, herring gull (Larus argentatus) and common gull (L. canus), using both empirical field data and experimental infections. At the level of individual hosts, the parasite species occupied different parts within the intestine, but the fecundity of the worms, measured as the number of eggs in the uterus, did not differ between the parasite species except in wild common gulls. Interestingly, egg numbers in individual hosts were positively correlated between the parasite species suggesting that some birds provided better resour…

Do highly ornamented and less parasitized males have high quality sperm? - an experimental test for parasite-induced reproductive trade-offs in Europ…

2014

Parasites take their resources from hosts and thus directly reduce available resources for hosts’ own body functions, such as growth and reproduction. Furthermore, parasite infections cause significant indirect costs to their hosts in terms of increased investments on immune defense. In this study, we investigated the impact of parasite infection on the sperm quality and expression of secondary sexual ornamentation (saturation of the red abdominal colouration and number of breeding tubercles) in the Eurasian minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus). We exposed minnows to a high and low dose of common nonspecific fish ectoparasite, the glochidia larvae of duck mussel (Anodonta anatina) and tested whether …
