Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were conducted for systems in vacuo consisting of n AOT(-) anions (bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate ions) and n+/- 1 or n Na(+) ions up to n = 20. For n = 15, positively charged systems with Li(+), K(+), and Cs(+) cations were also considered. All systems were observed to form reverse micelle-like aggregates whose centre is occupied by cations and polar heads in a very compact solid-like way, while globally the aggregate has the form of an elongated and rather flat ellipsoid. The electrochemical oxidation of maleic acid on tungsten anodes has been investigated. Glyoxal and carbon dioxide were the main products together with tartaric acid and acetaldehyde. Glyoxal is also obtained as the main product from the oxidation ofd-tartaric acid. Under the same conditions succinic acid is completely oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. The anodic dissolution of tungsten and the oxidation of water to oxygen become predominant in the final stages of the electrolyses.

1. Succinic acid is formed in amounts of 0.2–1.7 g/l by fermenting yeasts of the genusSaccharomyces during the exponential growth phase. No differences were observed between the various species, respiratory deficient mutants and wild type strains. 2. At low glucose concentrations the formation of succinic acid depended on the amount of sugar fermented. However, the nitrogen source was found to be of greater importance than the carbon source. 3. Positively charged supramolecular aggregates formed in vacuo by n AOTNa (sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate) molecules and n(c) additional sodium ions, i.e. [AOT(n)Na(n+n(c))](n(c)), have been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for n = 1-20 and n(c) = 0-5. Statistical analysis of physical quantities like gyration radii, atomic B-factors and moment of inertia tensors provides detailed information on their structural and dynamical properties. In an oxystat, the synthesis of the fermentation products formate, acetate, ethanol, lactate, and succinate of Escherichia coli was studied as a function of the O2 tension (pO2) in the medium. The pO2 values that gave rise to half-maximal synthesis of the products (pO0. 5) were 0.2-0.4 mbar for ethanol, acetate, and succinate, and 1 mbar for formate. The pO0.5 for the expression of the adhE gene encoding alcohol dehydrogenase was approximately 0.8 mbar. Thus, the pO2 for the onset of fermentation was distinctly lower than that for anaerobic respiration (pO0.5/= 5 mbar), which was determined earlier. Abstract Chemically modified pullulan was evaluated for its sorption efficiency and selectivity to remove cadmium (Cd) from spiked high-hardness groundwater (GW). Pullulan esterified with succinic anhydride using dimethylaminopyridine showed a fairly high degree of substitution value as confirmed by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Pullulan succinate (Pull-Suc) was converted into the sodium salt (Pull-Suc-Na). The effect of contact time (5–200 min) and pH (2–8) on Cd-uptake by the sorbent (Pull-Suc-Na) was investigated. Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is a sedative drug used in drug-facilitated crimes. Its detection window is very short. ABSTRACT Wild-type Escherichia coli K-12 ferments glucose to a mixture of ethanol and acetic, lactic, formic, and succinic acids. In anoxic chemostat culture at four dilution rates and two different oxidoreduction potentials (ORP), this strain generated a spectrum of products which depended on ORP. Whatever the dilution rate tested, in low reducing conditions (−100 mV), the production of formate, acetate, ethanol, and lactate was in molar proportions of approximately 2.5:1:1:0.3, and in high reducing conditions (−320 mV), the production was in molar proportions of 2:0.6:1:2.
