La Palazzina Cinese di Palermo. Tra decorazione e simbolismo
2016

This is the text of a dialogue with Pan Wuyi, the Chinese woman writer author of the novel 《马德里的春天》(Madrid's Spring) translated by me from Chinese into Italian.
Direct evidence for neutrino flavor transformation from neutral-current interactions in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
2002
Observations of neutral current neutrino interactions on deuterium in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are reported. Using the neutral current, elastic scattering, and charged current reactions and assuming the standard 8B shape, the electron-neutrino component of the 8B solar flux is 1.76 +/-0.05(stat.)+/-0.09(syst.) x10^6/(cm^2 s), for a kinetic energy threshold of 5 MeV. The non-electron neutrino component is 3.41+/-0.45(stat.)+0.48,-0.45(syst.) x10^6/(cm^2 s), 5.3 standard deviations greater than zero, providing strong evidence for solar electron neutrino flavor transformation. The total flux measured with the NC reaction is 5.09 +0.44,-0.43(stat.)+0.46,-0.43(syst.)x10^6/(cm^2 s), consi…
Immunohistochemical detection of early myocardial infarction: a systematic review
2017
The postmortem diagnosis of early myocardial infarction is a challenge for forensic pathologists because the routine histology is neither specific. Many authors have suggested the use of the immunohistochemistry to fill the gaps in the histological diagnosis of early myocardial infarction. This review aims to analyse advances of immunohistochemical detection of early cardiac damage due to ischaemia. To this purpose, we reviewed experimental studies that investigated immunohistochemical markers and their estimated timing of expression. The review was performed according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, and a total of 23 studies assessing the immunohistochemical markers for the d…
Sudden death in water: Diagnostic challenges
2016
Abstract The authors report a case of sudden death in a breath-holding diver and highlight the forensic diagnostic difficulties in opining the cause of sudden death in water. The autopsy showed increased thickness of the left ventricular wall with a distinct pattern of concentric hypertrophy, evident particularly in the subaortic interventricular septum. Histological examination revealed diffuse interstitial fibrosis and associated findings of multifocal myocyte disarray especially evident in the subaortic interventricular septum. The analysis and discussion of this case made it possible to attribute sudden death to a lethal arrhythmia following myocyte disarray and hypoxia caused by breath…
Usefulness of DNA quantification in diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathies
2006
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathies (HCM) are a frequent cause of sudden death in both young people and adults. Different cardiomyopathies can be distinguished according to the etiological agent and, although there are morphological differences too, alterations in the quantity of DNA in the cardiomyocytes may play an important role in their pathogenesis and evolution. To understand the characteristics and the behaviour of the DNA index in hypertrophic cardiomyopathies, we have studied thirty cases (10 primaries or essential, 10 hypertensives and 10 toxic) and compared the results with those obtained for 10 macroscopically normal hearts. The results showed that the different cardiomyopathies were …
Dystrophin and metalloproteinase 9 in myocardial ischemia: A post-mortem immunohistochemical study
2021
The presented study evaluated the expression of dystrophin and MMP-9 in cases of sudden cardiac death (SCD) due to coronary atherosclerotic disease (CAD) in order to analyze the characteristics and the chronology of their expression, providing evidence on the possible role in post-mortem diagnosis of myocardial ischemia. The expression of these proteins was also compared to C5b-9 complex and fibronectin expression to evaluate any differences. Two groups of CAD-related SCD, respectively group 1 with gross and/or histological evidence and group 2 with no specific histological signs of myocardial ischemia, were used. A third group formed by cases of acute mechanical asphyxiation was used as a …
Broken heart, tako-tsubo or stress cardiomyopathy? Metaphors, meanings and their medical impact
2016
The cardiac impact of psychological stress historically and socially understood as boundary experiences of human life has long since become an icon. From the aching heart to the sudden death provoked by awe, horror, grief, anger, and humiliation on one side and extreme enchantment, enthusiasm, and excitement on the other, the broken heart has become a globally recognized and powerful metaphor present from folklore to popular culture to high literature and back to everyday communication. In medicine, the "broken heart syndrome" is described as a relatively new nosological entity that has been used synonymously with the term tako-tsubo or stress cardiomyopathy. Among those three terms, howeve…
