N-Glycosylamines of 4,6-O-ethylidene-alpha-D-glucopyranose: synthesis, characterisation and structure of CO2H, Cl and F ortho-substituted phenyl deri…
2000
A saccharide based ligand suitable for metal binding (HLCOOH) has been synthesized using 4,6-O-ethylidene-alpha-D-glucopyranose (4,6-O-EGP) and anthranilic acid. A few analogous glycosylamines with chloro and fluoro ortho substitutions have also been synthesized and characterised. Complexes of HLCOOH with Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ have been isolated and characterised fully. The crystal structures of 4,6-O-EGP, the chloro analogue of HLCOOH and the K+ complex of L-COOH are established. The anomeric nature, orientation of the binding core and the co-ordination aspects of K+ have been derived from these structures.
EFFECTS OF SENSITIZED AND UNSENSITIZED LONGWAVE U.V.-IRRADIATION ON THE SOLUTION PROPERTIES OF DNA
1971
— Two types of photoreactions occur in DNA irradiated in aqueous systems with longwave u.v.-light (Λ > 295 nm), namely, (a) thymine dimerization, and (b) single- and double-strand breakage of the sugar phosphate backbone; these two reactions are unrelated. The presence of acetophenone as a photosensitizer caused an increase in dimerization by a factor of 16, and an increase in single-strand breaks by a factor of 4. The number of thymine dimers per single-strand break is about 100 in the sensitized and 25 in the unsensitized reaction. The alteration of the radius of gyration of DNA molecules is that expected by the degradation observed. At the same time the change in hyperchromicity is very …
Hemicellulose hydrolysis catalysed by solid acids
2013
Depolymerising hemicellulose into platform sugar molecules is a key step in developing the concept of an integrated biorefinery. This reaction is traditionally catalysed by either enzymes or homogeneous mineral acids. We compared various solid catalysts for hemicellulose hydrolysis, running reactions in water, under neutral pH and relatively mild temperature and pressure (120°C and 10 bar) conditions. Sulphonated resins are highly active, but they leach out sulphonic groups. Sulphonated silicas are less active, but more stable. They have weakly and strongly bound sites and the strongly bound ones do not leach. Zeolites are moderately active and stable. Among them, H-ferrierite especially, d…
Direct acid-catalysed mechanical depolymerisation of fibre sludge to reducing sugars using planetary milling
2016
Abstract This study performed a direct solvent-free acid-catalysed mechanical depolymerisation of fibre sludge to reducing sugars which involves one step of acid milling in a planetary mill. The common reported ‘solvent-free’ mechanocatalytic depolymerisation of lignocellulose which includes 1) acid impregnation, 2) vacuum evaporation and 3) mechanocatalytic depolymerisation was also performed as a reference. The major converted monosaccharides were determined by capillary electrophoresis and the results of total reducing sugar (TRS) yields were carried out based on the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method. The results showed that the TRS conversion of direct acid-catalysed mechanical dep…
Pretreatment and fractionation of lignocellulosic barley straw by mechanocatalysis
2017
Abstract This study focuses on the mechanocatalytical process combining dilute acid pretreatment and mechanical processing driven by ball milling. Milled and hydrolyzed barley straw samples are subject to reducing sugar analysis by DNS assay and capillary electrophoresis. Optimization of the saccharification conditions was carried out with two different sulfuric acid concentrations, 0.5 mol kg −1 and 1.0 mol kg −1 , and compared. A significant yield of total reducing sugar (53.4%) was obtained from barley straw impregnated with sulfuric acid (1.0 mol kg −1 ) after milling for only 20 min. Glucose and xylose concentrations accounted for 3.5% and 11.3%, respectively. Strikingly, the present s…
Acid-catalyzed mechanocatalytic pretreatment to improve sugar release from birch sawdust: Structural and chemical aspects
2022
Abstract This study examined acid-catalyzed mechanocatalytic pretreatment of birch sawdust without a separate impregnation step. Catalyst amount and pretreatment time were the key variables. Pretreated material was mixed with water for hydrolysis (100 °C, 60 min). The efficient release of total reducing sugars from birch sawdust is significant to the path towards biofuels and biochemicals. Based on the results, the structure and surface of birch sawdust changed as a function of mechanocatalytic pretreatment. Milling time caused significant transformations in birch structure and also increased the yields of reducing sugars. The highest yield of total reducing sugar from pretreated sawdust wa…
Allelic variants of hexose transporter Hxt3p and hexokinases Hxk1p/Hxk2p in strains ofSaccharomyces cerevisiaeand interspecies hybrids
2015
The transport of sugars across the plasma membrane is a critical step in the utilization of glucose and fructose by Saccharomyces cerevisiae during must fermentations. Variations in the molecular structure of hexose transporters and kinases may affect the ability of wine yeast strains to finish sugar fermentation, even under stressful wine conditions. In this context, we sequenced and compared genes encoding the hexose transporter Hxt3p and the kinases Hxk1p/Hxk2p of Saccharomyces strains and interspecies hybrids with different industrial usages and regional backgrounds. The Hxt3p primary structure varied in a small set of amino acids, which characterized robust yeast strains used for the p…
Ferrocenyl-Labeled Sugar Amino Acids: Conformation and Properties
2012
Novel organometallic sugar amino acid conjugates 1–5 have been prepared by amide coupling of O-protected N-acetylmuramic acid and iso-muramic acid (2-[3-amino-2, 5-dihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxan-4-yl]oxypropanoic acid) with 1-aminoferrocene, 1-aminoferrocene-1′-carboxylic acid (H-Fca-OH), or 1, 1′-diaminoferrocene, respectively. The influence of the ferrocenyl moiety and presence of additional remote potential hydrogen atom acceptors and donors at the ferrocenyl core on the conformation and lipophilicity is investigated by TLC, IR, NMR, and CD spectroscopic methods augmented by density functional calculations. Furthermore, the redox potential of the ferrocene/ferrocenium couple is tuned by…

2009
Abstract A polysaccharide isolated after mild acid degradation of the lipopolysaccharide of Vibrio vulnificus clinical isolate YJ016 was found to contain l -Fuc, d -GlcpNAc, 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxy- d -glucose (di-N-acetylbacillosamine, d -QuiNAc4NAc), and 2-acetimidoylamino-2-deoxy- l -galacturonic acid ( l -GalNAmA). The last sugar derivative was confirmed by correlations for nitrogen-linked protons in 2D TOCSY and ROESY spectra measured in a H2O–D2O mixture. The following structure of the polysaccharide was established by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, including 2D ROESY and 1H,13C HMBC experiments: Download : Download full-size image where the degree of 6-O-acetylation of the later…
Characterizing physicochemical, nutritional and quality attributes of wholegrain Oryza sativa L. subjected to high intensity ultrasound-stimulated pr…
2020
Abstract When ultrasonic stimulation is applied to plant seeds it may promote the development of new adaptive characteristics during germination, thus providing an alternative to regulate nutritional and physicochemical attributes of germinated seeds. However, there is rather limited information concerning high-intensity ultrasound (HIU) effects on the germination process of crop seeds as foodstuff. This investigation aimed at examining the effects of a novel processing pattern, which coupled HIU stimulation (28 kHz, 17.83 W cm−2) to a pre-germination stage, on the physicochemical, nutritional and quality changes of wholegrain brown rice (WBR; Oryza sativa L.). Results suggested that HIU st…
