Long-term decrease in Asian monsoon rainfall and abrupt climate change events over the past 6,700 years

2021

Significance The variability of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) is important for the functioning of ecological and societal systems at regional to continental scales, but the long-term evolution and interannual variability of this system is not well understood. Here, we present a stable isotope–based reconstruction of ASM variability covering 4680 BCE to 2011 CE. Superimposed on a gradual drying trend, a rapid drop in mean annual precipitation (>40%) toward persistently drier conditions occurred in ∼1675 BCE. This megadrought caused regional forest deterioration and enhanced aeolian activity affecting Chinese ecosystems. We argue that this abrupt aridification starting ∼2000 BCE triggered wa…

APPLICATION OF UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES FOR GLACIER RESEARCH IN THE ARCTIC AND ANTARCTIC

2019

Unmanned aerial vehicles or drones are nowadays widely used in a broad field of scientific and commercial applications. Despite this, it is quite a new method for glacier mapping in polar regions and has a lot of advantages, as well as disadvantages over more classical remote sensing instruments. Here we examine the main issues associated with the application of drones for glacier research from our experience in Iceland, Greenland and the Antarctic. We use DJI Phantom series drones for the obtaining of aerial photographs and produce digital surface models (resolution of 8 – 16 cm) and orthomosaics (resolution of 2 – 4 cm) for glacier mapping. Several issues related to the ground control poi…

[EN]In Catalonia, the Mediterranean and m…

Sex-specific differences regarding seasonal variations of incidence and mortality in patients with myocardial infarction in Germany

2019

Seasonal variation regarding the incidence and the short-term mortality of acute myocardial infarction (MI) was frequently reported, but data about sex-specific differences are sparse. We analysed the impact of seasons and temperature on incidence and in-hospital mortality of patients with acute MI in Germany between 2005 and 2015.The nationwide sample comprised 3,008,188 hospitalizations of MI patients (2005-2015). The incidence was 334.7/100,000 citizens/year. Incidence inclined from 316.3 to 341.6/100,000 citizens/year (β 0.17 [0.10 to 0.24], P  0.001), while in-hospital mortality rate decreased from 14.1% to 11.3% (β -0.29 [-0.30 to -0.28], P  0.001). Overall, 377,028 (12.5%) patients di…

Trace gas composition in the Asian summer monsoon anticyclone: a case study based on aircraft observations and model simulations

2017

We present in situ measurements of the trace gas composition of the upper tropospheric (UT) Asian summer monsoon anticyclone (ASMA) performed with the High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO) in the frame of the Earth System Model Validation (ESMVal) campaign. Air masses with enhanced O3 mixing ratios were encountered after entering the ASMA at its southern edge at about 150 hPa on 18 September 2012. This is in contrast to the presumption that the anticyclone's interior is dominated by recently uplifted air with low O3 in the monsoon season. We also observed enhanced CO and HCl in the ASMA, which are tracers for boundary layer pollution and tropopause layer (TL) air or stratosp…

Impact of Different Building Materials on Summer Comfort in Low-Energy Buildings

2015

Abstract The aim of the current paper is to analyse thermal comfort and overheating risks in the low-energy buildings in a summer season under Latvian climate conditions both experimentally and numerically. An interior temperature and relative humidity are analysed under free-floating conditions. Two cases are analysed: in one case, the solar influence through the window is taken into account; in the other this influence is omitted. Three different building solutions are observed: two building structures which mainly consist of the mineral wool and wooden materials and one structure from aerated clay bricks and mineral wool. The experiments have been implemented in test stands in Riga, Latv…

Models as Research Tools: Plücker, Klein, and Kummer Surfaces

2018

In the late summer of 1869, 20-year-old Felix Klein made his way to Berlin, where he planned to attend the renowned seminar founded by Ernst Eduard Kummer and Karl Weierstrass. Klein had already taken his doctorate in Bonn and he would soon be recognized as a leading expert on line geometry, a new approach to 3-space launched by his mentor in Bonn, Julius Plucker. Just before Plucker died in 1868, he entrusted Klein to complete the classic monograph, Neue Geometrie des Raumes gegrundet auf die Betrachtung der geraden Linie als Raumelement. Overall responsibility for this project fell to Alfred Clebsch in Gottingen, which was how Klein first came to the prestigious Georgia Augusta. There he …

"Signore, che pazzi questi mortali!" Un percorso intorno al "Midsummer Night's Dream" di Benjamin Britten

2017

Il saggio prende le mosse dal "Midsummer Night's Dream" di William Shakespeare e dalle sue versioni e interpretazioni musicali a partire dal XVII secolo e descrive la genesi, la struttura e lo sviluppo drammaturgico dell'opera di Benjamin Britten, proponendone una dettagliata descrizione musicale.
