DNA structure-specific sensitization of a metalloporphyrin leads to an efficient in vitro quadruplex detection molecular tool

International audience; The search for convenient molecular probes for detecting DNA and RNA quadruplexes in vitro is marked by a rapid pace of progress, spurred on by the multiple roles these higher-order nucleic acid structures play in many genetic dysregulations. Here, we contribute to this search, reporting on a palladated porphyrin named Pd.TEGPy: its efficiency as quadruplex-selective fluorescent dye relies on a structural design that endows it with attractive supramolecular and electronic properties and makes it an efficient turn-on, quadruplex-selective fluorescent stain thanks to a DNA-mediated sensitization mechanism that ensures a high level of specificity.
Superfluorinated ionic liquid crystals based on supramolecular, halogen-bonded anions

Unconventional ionic liquid crystals in which the liquid crystallinity is enabled by halogen-bonded supramolecular anions [CnF2 n+1-I⋯I⋯I-CnF2 n+1]- are reported. The material system is unique in many ways, demonstrating for the first time 1) ionic, halogen-bonded liquid crystals, and 2) imidazolium-based ionic liquid crystals in which the occurrence of liquid crystallinity is not driven by the alkyl chains of the cation. Past, Present and Future Perspectives on Halloysite Clay Minerals

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), clay minerals belonging to the kaolin groups, are emerging nanomaterials which have attracted the attention of the scientific community due to their interesting features, such as low-cost, availability and biocompatibility. In addition, their large surface area and tubular structure have led to HNTs’ application in different industrial purposes. This review reports a comprehensive overview of the historical background of HNT utilization in the last 20 years. In particular it will focus on the functionalization of the surfaces, both supramolecular and covalent, following applications in several fields, including biomedicine, environmental science and catalysis.
Tunable Superstructures of Dendronized Graphene Nanoribbons in Liquid Phase

In this Communication, we report the first synthesis of structurally well-defined graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) functionalized with dendritic polymers. The resultant GNRs possess grafting ratios of 0.59-0.68 for the dendrons of different generations. Remarkably, the precise 3D branched conformation of the grafted dendrons affords the GNRs unprecedented 1D supramolecular self-assembly behavior in tetrahydrofuran (THF), yielding nanowires, helices and nanofibers depending on the dimension of the dendrons. The GNR superstructures in THF exhibit near-infrared absorption with maxima between 650 and 700 nm, yielding an optical bandgap of 1.2-1.3 eV. Ultrafast photoconductivity analyses unveil that …

A Simple System Based on a Thiourea-Modified Fluorescein for ω-Amino Acid Discrimination

A thiourea-modified fluorescein derivative was synthesized by reaction of fluorescein isothiocyanate with 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethan-1-ol. UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy studies demonstrated that this heteroditopic receptor was able to discriminate among linear aliphatic ω-amino acids with different chain lengths.
Rheological modifiers based on supramolecular block copolymers: From weak associations to interconnected micelles

Abstract The rheological spectra of poly(n-butyl acrylate) in the presence of a series of P(nBA-b-HEMA) rheology modifiers show a two-step relaxation process originating from the PnBA matrix and the self-assemblies. The HEMA segments are further grafted with strong, hydrogen bonding UPy groups, which both magnifies and slows down the relaxation of the assemblies. The extents of associations are enlightened by studying thermal transitions in DSC, morphological developments by SAXS, and description of rheological properties using a tube-based model. This report describes the construction of ultrathin films whose structure can be tailored on the molecular scale. The resulting supramolecular film architectures may include functional biological macromolecules such as proteins or polynucleotides. The average distances of two functional layers can be adjusted on the nanometer scale (from less than lnm to several tens of nanometers), with a precision of approximately 0.1 nm. Formation of supramolecular aggregates by hydrogen bonding based on bispyrimidine and bisbarbituric acid

Hydrogen bonds between bispyrimidine and bisbarbituric acid in equal molar ratio can lead to the formation of supramolecular aggregates. This is established by TEM, IR and DSC measurements. Additionally, WAXS pattern showed that the aggregate is of laminar structure. Both the hydrolysis of this system and termination of the aggregate's growth were studied.
Supramolecular Aggregates in Vacuum: Positively Mono-Charged Sodium Alkanesulfonate Clusters

The formation and structural features of positively mono-charged aggregates of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) and sodium methane—(MetS), butane—(ButS) and octane—(OctS) sulfonate molecules in the gas phase have been investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, energy-resolved mass spectrometry and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The experimental results show that the center-of-mass collision energy required to dissociate 50% of these mono-charged aggregates scantly depends on the length of the alkyl chain as well as on the aggregation number.
