Brillouin light scattering study of Co$_{2}$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al and Co$_{2}$FeAl Heusler compounds

2008

The thermal magnonic spectra of Co$_{2}$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al (CCFA) and Co$_2$FeAl were investigated using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy (BLS). For CCFA, the exchange constant A (exchange stiffness D) is found to be 0.48 $\mu$erg/cm (203 meV A$^2$), while for Co$_2$FeAl the corresponding values of 1.55 $\mu$erg/cm (370 meV A$^2$) were found. The observed asymmetry in the BLS spectra between the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies was assigned to an interplay between the asymmetrical profiles of hybridized Damon-Esbach and perpendicular standing spin-wave modes, combined with the optical sensitivity of the BLS signal to the upper side of the CCFA or Co$_2$FeAl film.

Gaussian quantum dots of type II in in-plane electric field

2007

The growing interest is recently focusing on QDs of type II, which contrary to type I QDs attract electrons and repulse holes (or conversely). In such QDs an electron-hole pair (Xexciton) can still be traped due to electron-hole Coulomb attraction, resulting in significantly more complex structure of excitonic states. We consider an X exciton in QD of type II defined by electrostatic focusing in a narrow quantum well, in the presence of additional external in-plane electric field. The dependence of PL spectrum on dot size and in-plane electric field is analysed within the Hartree approach for model planar Gaussian confinement. The exciton ground state and its energy red-shift are found as a…

Laser action in electrically driven quantum dot matrix

2007

A lasing system based on electrically driven quantum dot matrix is proposed, where population inversion of the dot matrix is obtained by rapid (nonadiabatic) switching on of in-plane electric field as a pumping force. Numerical analysis of electron-photon system kinetics is performed for various electric fields and temperatures. For parabolic type of confinement in QDs, a convenient amplification of contribution from several levels is indicated. The relevant analysis utilises an exact solution of Cauchy problem for an infinite chain of linear differential equations.

Orbital origin and matrix element effects in the Ag/Si(111)-()R30° Fermi surface

2007

The Fermi surface (FS) of the Ag/Si(1 1 1)-3×3 reconstruction with an excess of Ag has been mapped by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy with polarized light in a wide region of the reciprocal space and with different detection geometries. In contrast to previous results, a strong polarization dependence is observed. Applying the dipole selection rules, it is found that the surface state at the Fermi level, S1 state, has odd symmetry with respect to the mirror plane of the honeycomb-chained triangle structure, indicating that it is mainly derived from Ag 5px and 5py orbitals. This conclusion is revised in the new frame of a inequivalent-triangle structure for the Ag/Si(1 1 1)-3×3 at …

Properties of the Ising magnet confined in a corner geometry

2007

Abstract The properties of Ising square lattices with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic exchange confined in a corner geometry, are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Free boundary conditions at which boundary magnetic fields ± h are applied, i.e., at the two boundary rows ending at the lower left corner a field + h acts, while at the two boundary rows ending at the upper right corner a field − h acts. For temperatures T less than the critical temperature T c of the bulk, this boundary condition leads to the formation of two domains with opposite orientation of the magnetization direction, separated by an interface which for T larger than the filling transition temperature T f ( h ) …

Fluorescence relaxation in the near-field of a mesoscopic metallic particle : distance dependence and role of plasmon modes

2008

International audience; We analytically and numerically analyze the fluorescence decay rate of a quantum emitter placed in the vicinity of a spherical metallic particle of mesoscopic size (i.e with dimensions comparable to the emission wavelength). We discuss the efficiency of the radiative decay rate and non–radiative coupling to the particle as well as their distance dependence. The electromagnetic coupling mechanisms between the emitter and the particle are investigated by analyzing the role of the plasmon modes and their nature (dipole, multipole or interface mode). We demonstrate that near-field coupling can be expressed in a simple form verifying the optical theorem for each particle …

Potential and energy of some spheroidal charge distributions with azimuthal symmetry

1989

Abstract The Poisson equation is solved for three types of spheroidal charge distributions with azimuthal symmetry, namely, those depending on one cartesian coordinate, on the radial cylindrical coordinate and on the radial spherical coordinate. The energy of such distributions is found for the case of power functions of these coordinates and it has been normalized, computed and plotted for some low values of the exponent.

Calculating thermodynamic properties from fluctuations at small scales.

2011

We show how density and energy fluctuations of small nonperiodic systems embedded in a reservoir can be used to determine macroscopic thermodynamic properties like the enthalpy density and the thermodynamic correction factor. For mixtures, the same formalism leads to a very convenient method to obtain so-called total correlation function integrals, also often referred to as Kirkwood-Buff integrals. Using finite size scaling, the properties obtained for small systems can be extrapolated to the macroscopic system limit provided that the system is sufficiently far from the critical point. As derived in our previous work (Chem. Phys. Lett. 2011, 504, 199-201), the finite size scaling is signifi…

Electric potential and field between two different spheres

1998

Abstract We consider a system of two spheres with different radii embedded in an infinite medium supporting an external uniform electric field. We calculate the electric potential in the whole space and the dipole moment of this system using the bispherical coordinates system. Our method is efficient enough to avoid any simplifying approximation concerning the system geometry, the external field orientation and the conductivity of the spheres.
