Field-induced tip–sample oxygen transfer in scanning tunneling microscopy on TiO2(110) (1 1).

International audience; A study on the field-induced tip–surface oxygen transfer at room temperature and its influence on the tunneling conditions for stable STM imaging of the TiO2(110) (1 1) surface is reported. A simple model of field-induced transfer is applied to tungsten and platinum–iridium tips. The oxygen transition rates from the sample to the tip or from the tip to the sample depend on the oxygen desorption barriers formed at tunneling distance. For stable imaging the applied bias voltage has to balance the oxygen transfer probabilities in both directions. Stabilizing spin spirals and isolated skyrmions at low magnetic field exploiting vanishing magnetic anisotropy

Skyrmions are topologically protected non-collinear magnetic structures. Their stability is ideally suited to carry information in, e.g., racetrack memories. The success of such a memory critically depends on the ability to stabilize and manipulate skyrmions at low magnetic fields. The non-collinear Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction originating from spin-orbit coupling drives skyrmion formation. It competes with Heisenberg exchange and magnetic anisotropy favoring collinear states. Isolated skyrmions in ultra-thin films so far required magnetic fields as high as several Tesla. Carbohydrate-Mediated Biomolecular Recognition and Gating of Synthetic Ion Channels

Nanochannel-based biosensing devices have been proposed for selective detection of protein analyte molecules. However, the design and miniaturization of reusable channel-based biosensors is still a challenge in nanoscience and biotechnology. We present here a reusable nanofluidic biosensor based on reversible lectin-carbohydrate interactions. The nanochannels are fabricated in heavy ion tracked polymer membranes. The channel walls are functionalized with p-aminophenyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside (APMP) monolayers through carbodiimide coupling chemistry. Heterogeneity at the Glass Transition:  Translational and Rotational Self-Diffusion

Self-diffusion coefficients, D, have been measured in the glass forming liquids salol, glycerol, phenolphthaleine dimethyl ether (PDE), cresolphthaleine dimethyl ether (CDE), and ααβ-trinaphthylbenzene (TNB) in the supercooled regime. The NMR static magnetic field gradient technique was applied where D >10-14 m2 s-1 can be attained. The results are similar to previous diffusion experiments where an enhancement of translational diffusion was found in comparison with rotational diffusion and shear viscosity. Various models of spatial heterogeneity are related to a phenomenological environmental fluctuation model in view of recent diffusion and relaxation data close to the glass transition.

Surface Self-Diffusion and Mean Displacement of Hydrogen on Graphite and a PEM Fuel Cell Catalyst Support

International audience; Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) measurements together with equilibrium molecular dynamic (EMD) simulations have been performed to investigate the surface interaction between hydrogen molecules and a carbon material commonly used in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), called XC-72. Half a monolayer of molecular hydrogen was adsorbed on to the carbon material at 2 K. QENS spectra were recorded at the time-of-flight spectrometer IN5 at 40, 45, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 K. A voltammetric e-tongue tool for the emulation of the sensorial analysis and the discrimination of vegetal milks

[EN] The relevance of plant-based food alternatives to dairy products, such as vegetable milks, has been growing in recent decades, and the development of systems capable of classifying and predicting the sensorial profile of such products is interesting. In this context, a methodology to perform the sensorial analysis of vegetable milks (oat, soya, rice, almond and tiger nut), based on 12 parameters, was validated. Experimental results are reported showing that the photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic compounds containing an electron-donor group (EDG) gives rise mainly to ortho- and para-monohydroxy derivatives while in the presence of an electron-withdrawing group (EWG) all the monohydroxy derivatives are obtained.

A surface can be harsh and raspy, or smooth and silky, and everything in between. We are used to sense these features with our fingertips as well as with our eyes and ears: the exploration of a surface is a multisensory experience. Tools, too, are often employed in the interaction with surfaces, since they augment our manipulation capabilities. “Sketch-a-Scratch” is a tool for the multisensory exploration and sketching of surface textures. The user’s actions drive a physical sound model of real materials’ response to interactions such as scraping, rubbing or rolling.
