Consumer selection of vegetarian food in restaurants
2015
Development, which began from agricultural and industrial revolutions has improved and eased human lives on this planet. But the massive growth of the human population has caused some serious environmental impacts on our planet. Millions of hectares of forests have been converted into arable land, fresh water resources are decreasing and oceans are getting overfished, while the demand for food continues to grow. Agriculture is the most important contributor to the climate change and global meat production sector causes more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere than transport. By reducing the consumption of meat and increasing the proportion of vegetables in human diets, the environmental impa…

Environmental citizenship in geography and beyond
2020
The need for wider action against environmental problems such as climate change has brought the debate about the role of citizen to the political, practical, and scientific domains. Environmental citizenship provides a useful tool to conceptualize the relation between citizenship and the environment. However, there exists considerable variation in the ways environmental citizenship is understood regarding both the aspect of citizenship and the relationship to the environment. In this article, we review the literature on environmental citizenship and investigate the evolution of the concept. Mobilising Consumers for Food Waste Reduction in Finnish Media Discourse
2019
Raippalinna explores how consumers are mobilised for food waste reduction in media discourse. Food waste reduction initiatives are often criticised for putting the responsibility on individual consumers, but little research exists on the mobilisation of consumers in actual contexts. Through critical discourse analysis of media texts, Raippalinna investigates how the food waste problem and consumers are constructed in relation to each other in Finlands leading newspaper Helsingin Sanomat 2010–2017. The analysis demonstrates that the discourses of consumer mobilisation appear mostly as consumer education where the consumer’s role is to manage individual consumption and household practices. Th…

Stationary, Second Use Battery Energy Storage Systems and Their Applications: A Research Review
2021
The global demand for electricity is rising due to the increased electrification of multiple sectors of economic activity and an increased focus on sustainable consumption. Simultaneously, the share of cleaner electricity generated by transient, renewable sources such as wind and solar energy is increasing. This has made additional buffer capacities for electrical grids necessary. Battery energy storage systems have been investigated as storage solutions due to their responsiveness, efficiency, and scalability. Storage systems based on the second use of discarded electric vehicle batteries have been identified as cost-efficient and sustainable alternatives to first use battery storage syste…
