The financial performance of listed companies in pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)

2021

[EN] Socially responsible companies whose values are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) contribute to creating wealth and long-term economic and social value. This alignment leads to a competitive advantage based on the triple bottom line that enhances financial performance. In this paper, fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is used to identify the configurations of conditions that lead to high or low financial performance (return on equity) for a sample of companies in the IBEX 35. Firms should adopt business models that embrace the SDGs because sustainability-based models can ensure not only the present but also the future of generations…

Information and communication technologies in rural hotels

2010

There is a consensus about the beneficial effects of the applications of information and communication technologies (ICT) in several business contexts. Rural tourism companies have embraced these technological advances that have made a positive contribution to their quick expansion in recent years. Nevertheless, some technologies have received scarce attention from rural accommodation managers. The aim of this paper is to generate a conceptual framework on ICT development in the tourism market and, in particular, in rural accommodations. Thus, we aim at providing an overview of the main technological developments applied in this sector, analysing the level of ICT implementation in Spanish r…

How can we apply the models of the quality of life and the quality of life management in an economy based on knowledge?

2017

The scientific substantiations of quality have been applied to models that pertain to mathematical statistics, the probability theory, the information theory, fuzzy systems, graphic methods, time series, and algebraic and numerical methods. To these, this article aims to present a new method of applying mathematical modelling in an economy based on knowledge, by using the concept of the definite integral, the composite function, and mathematical optimisation. The research methods used in the realisation of this article are bibliographic research, creation of new models, and problem-solving. Mathematical modelling, the simulation of the quality of life, etc. are methods and techniques of bot…

Environmental pollution, sustained growth, and sufficient conditions for sustainable development

2016

Abstract Sustainability and optimality are the two main issues discussed in environmental economics and economic growth theory. This paper studies economic growth in the presence of two environmental externalities. The first one is local and gives account of the marginal damage from the emissions flow. The second one is aggregate, or global, and relates to the extreme damage which may happen if the accumulated stock of pollutants is on the threshold of a worldwide catastrophe. In this context, the decentralized equilibrium is inefficient and economic growth unsustainable. However, we find and completely characterize the socially optimal equilibrium, which shows that sustained growth is feas…

Gastronomic Tourism, an Opportunity for Diversifying the Tourist Offer in the Sibiu Area

1899

In the tourists’ motivation to choose a holiday destination, gastronomy is gaining important insights, which has led to an increasing supply of quality-based local products and a stronger market growth. Gastronomy has become one of the most dynamic segments on the international tourism scene. Gastronomic tourism begins to be viewed as a phenomenon as a new tourist product itself, due to the fact that more than one third of the expenses in the tourist offer of the destination are made food. This shows the importance of gastronomy in the quality of leisure experience. Gastronomic tourism gains more and more importance as motivating the future in choosing the holiday destination. Proof of this…

ICT and tourism impacts in islands

2018

New technologies can represent, for some aspects, both a problem and a precious resource. As we concerns, in tourism sector, ICT can help in managing and promoting destinations in a better way than in the past, especially in those cases where problems linked with the management of tourist flows and the need to manage a sustainable development exists. Monitoring tourism impact at the destination is a fundamental issue in order to respect the right pressure and to avoid negative effects in the destination and with the residents. There are several devices available and useful for different needs, therefore almost each kind of monitoring and analysis can be supported by the right tools. This kn…

Smart Sustainable Development Approach and its Implementation in Engineering Organizations

2014

This paper explores the concept of sustainability in engineering systems and proposes a smart conceptual framework for engineering organization development. Sustainability is a critically complex goal for enterprise activity and development. Sustainability in the engineering area requires a comprehensive and continue approach because, a) engineering activities are ubiquitous in society, b) of the high importance of engineering applications in the development of the companies and of the world, and c) technological support becomes imminent in a dynamic economic environment and sustained in large part by technological advances. This paper aims to provide to the engineering environment a smart …
