Oral verruciform xanthoma : report of 13 new cases and review of the literature

2018

Background Oral verruciform xanthoma (OVX) is a rare lesion. The purpose of the present study is to describe the clinical features of 13 OVXs and review all cases reported in the English literature. Material and Methods Thirteen cases of OVX diagnosed during a 47-year period were retrospectively collected. The patients’ gender and age, as well as the main clinical features of the lesions were retrieved from the biopsy request forms. Pubmed®, Scopus® and Google ScholarTM electronic databases were searched with the key word “verruciform xanthoma”. Only cases of histologically confirmed OVX were included in the study. Results The 13 OVXs represented approximately 0.04% of 35,617 biopsies acces…

Analysis of the upper cervical spine stiffness during axial rotation: A comparative study among patients with tension-type headache or migraine and a…

2017

Abstract Background Many studies reported the implication of the cervical musculoskeletal system in patients with tension type headache and migraine. The objective of this study is to investigate the upper cervical spine stiffness features in axial rotation among headache patients in comparison with a healthy population. Methods 48 subjects including 30 migraine patients with/without aura and 18 patients with tension-type headache, aged between 18 and 60 years (mean 36, SD 11 years) have been evaluated. Stiffness measurements were carried out for passive axial rotation using a torque meter device. The flexion-rotation test was used to emphasize assessment of the upper cervical spine. Findin…

Molecular detection of Helicobacter pylori in oral samples from patients suffering digestive pathologies

2010

Objective: to determine the simultaneous presence of H. pylori in both the oral cavity and gastric mucosal in patients suffering digestive pathologies and to establish the possible association between the presence of H. pylori in the oral cavity and the gingivoperiodontal pathology. Study design: Patients with gastric symptoms (case group) and asymptomatic patients (control group) seen at the Gastroenterology Department of Dr. Julio C. Perrando Hospital (Resistencia, Argentina) were selected. Dental plaque and saliva samples from both groups were obtained. In the case group, gastric biopsy samples were also taken. H. pylori was detected in gastric biopsies by histological stains, and Polyme…

Uncommon oral manifestation of lichen sclerosus: critical analysis of cases reported from 1957 to 2016

2017

Background Lichen sclerosus is a mucocutaneous autoimmune disease which might be initiated by infectious pathogens as Borrelia Bugrdorferi and HPV. This disease shows destructive potential and is rarely diagnosed in oral mucosa. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the characteristics of cases described in literature from 1957 to 2016, looking to provide valuable evidence about clinicopathologic features of this disease. Material and Methods A MedLine search was performed aiming to find oral lichen sclerosus cases in literature and discuss its demographical and pathological characteristics as well as treatment methods performed for these cases. Results 34 oral lichen sclerosus cases wit…

Cardiac arrhythmias in patients with Danon disease.

2016

Aims Different cardiac arrhythmias have been suggested to be associated with Danon disease, e.g. Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome. However, a systematic electrophysiological investigation of patients with Danon disease is lacking thus far. Methods and results Seven patients with Danon disease (4 males, 35.8 ± 10.8 years; 3 females, 51.3 ± 19.9 years) from 3 different families were studied. In all patients, the presence of Danon disease was confirmed by western blot of biopsy material or genetic testing. The patients were characterized by 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), Holter ECG, echocardiography, and serial implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) interrogations (in ICD recipients). Al…

Remission of severe rheumatoid arthritis following liver transplantation.

1993

We present the case of a 32-year-old male who suffered from severe RA from the age of 21 years. After 9 years of active disease and poor response to therapy the patient developed severe hepatitis induced by the NSAID pirprofen. He went into fulminant hepatic failure necessitating emergency liver transplantation. Liver transplantation was followed by clinical and laboratory remission of his RA and he has remained virtually asymptomatic for more than 3.5 years. The possibility that this favourable clinical course was due to the immunosuppressive effect of the liver transplant rather than the ensuing immunosuppressive therapy is discussed.

A retrospective study of 370 patients with oral lichen planus in Turkey.

2012

Objectives: Although several detailed studies concerning the patient profile and clinical features of oral lichen planus have been undertaken all over the world in different populations, a similar study has not yet been conducted in a Turkish population. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of a group of patients with oral lichen planus in Turkey. Study Design: Charts of 370 patients, from the archive of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology Department of Marmara University Faculty of Dentistry (Istanbul, Turkey), with histologically confirmed clinical diagnosis of oral lichen planus in the period 1990-2010 were retrospectively reviewed…
