Antioxidant Activity of All-trans-retinol in Homogeneous Solution and in Phosphatidylcholine Liposomes
1993
A kinetic quantification of the lipoperoxyl radical-scavenging activity of all-trans-retinol has been carried out in homogeneous solution, when radicals were produced from the oxidation of methyl linoleate in methanol, initiated by the lipid-soluble 2,2′-azobis (2,4-dimethyl-valeronitrile) (AMVN) as well as in a soybean phosphatidylcholine membrane model, in which peroxidation was induced either by AMVN or the hydrophylic 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane)hydrochloride (AAPH). The physical microenvironment contributes to the determination of antioxidant efficiency of all-trans-retinol. In homogeneous solution the kinetic constant kinh is 3.5 × 105 M-1 s-1 and appears of the same order of magnitu…
Changes in Levels of a-Tocopherol and Ascorbate in Spruce Needles at Three Low Mountain Sites Exposed to Mg2+-Deficiency and Ozone
1994
The main objective of this study was the com parison of changes in levels of α-tocopherol and ascorbate in needles of spruce trees with various degrees of damage at three low mountain sites. The ascorbate content in needles of spruce trees with various degrees of dam age differs in the course of seasons as well as in the absolute level. The antioxidant status was affected mainly during summer. The content of ascorbate in needles of dam aged trees was significantly increased compared to that of undamaged trees. Despite seasonal and daily fluctuations, the level of ascorbate seems to be a good indicator for the degree of dam age in the case of symptoms described as montane yellowing. Together…
Green sulphur bacteria as a component of the photosynthetic plankton community in small dimictic humic lakes with an anoxic hypolimnion
2013
High bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) concentrations in the anoxic water layers of some humic lakes have indicated that green sulphur bacteria (GSB) may be ecologically significant. The abundance and spatial distribution of GSB were therefore addressed in 13 small humic lakes using fragment analysis and sequencing of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA genes. GSB were detected from lakes where the photosynthetically active radiation was at least 1.1 µE m 2 s 1 at the oxic anoxic boundary layer. In these lakes, 13 to 42% of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of the anoxic water column were assigned to GSB. The spatial distribution of GSB was tightly correlated with the spectrophotometrically measured BChl concentr…
A modelistic approach showing the importance of the stagnant aqueous layers in in vitro diffusion studies, and in vitro-in vivo correlations
1991
Abstract The present study deals with the role of the aqueous diffusion layers on the in vitro penetration of xenobiotics across artificial lipoidal membranes, and their ability to reproduce biophysical absorption models when in vivo results are to be simulated from the in vitro tests. The aqueous boundary layers which are invariably formed on artificial lipoidal membranes can be optionally preserved or disrupted, according to the type of absorption site which should be simulated, a condition which could reasonably lead to a better correspondence between in vitro and in vivo results; in practice, disruption of water layers can be easily achieved by a synthetic surfactant solution at its cri…
A Fast Imaging Technique Applied to 2D Electrical Resistivity Data
2014
A new technique is proposed to process 2D apparent resistivity datasets, in order to obtain a fast and contrasted resistivity image, useful for a rapid data check in field or as a starting model to constrain the inversion procedure. In the past some modifications to the back-projection algorithm, as well as the use of filtering techniques for the sensitivity matrix were proposed. An implementation of this technique is proposed here, considering a two-step approach. Initially a damped least squares solution is obtained after a full matrix inversion of the linearized geoelectrical problem. Furthermore, on the basis of the results, a subsequent filtering algorithm is applied to the Jacobian ma…
Characterization and intercomparison of global moderate resolution leaf area index (LAI) products: Analysis of climatologies and theoretical uncertai…
2013
products (R 2 >0.74), with typical deviations of<0.5 for nonforest and<1.0 for forest biomes. JRC-TIP, the only effective LAI product, is about half the values of the other LAI products. The average uncertainties and relative uncertainties are in the following order: MODIS (0.17, 11.5%)<GEOV1 (0.24, 26.6%)<Land-SAF (0.36, 37.8%) <JRC-TIP (0.43, 114.3%). The highest relative uncertainties usually appear in ecological transition zones. More than 75% of MODIS, GEOV1, JRC-TIP, and Land-SAF pixels are within the absolute uncertainty requirements ( 0.5) set by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), whereas more than 78.5% of MODIS and 44.6% of GEOV1 pixels are within the threshold for relat…
Hyperspectral response of agronomic variables to background optical variability: Results of a numerical experiment
2022
Understanding how biophysical and biochemical variables contribute to the spectral characteristics of vegetation canopies is critical for their monitoring. Quantifying these contributions, however, remains difficult due to extraneous factors such as the spectral variability of canopy background materials, including soil/crop-residue moisture, soil-type, and non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV). This study focused on exploring the spectral response of two important agronomic variables (1) leaf chlorophyll content (Cab ) and (2) leaf area index (LAI) under various canopy backgrounds through a global sensitivity analysis of wheat-like canopy spectra simulated using the physically-based PROSAIL …
A Two-Dimensional Autoregressive Model for MIMO Wideband Mobile Radio Channels
2008
In this work, we propose the multichannel two- dimensional (2D) autoregressive (AR) model for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wideband mobile wireless channels. The parameters of the proposed model can be estimated from the real- world measurement data. For this purpose, we suggest using a straightforward extension of the prediction error minimization (PEM) algorithm. We also address the problem of possible instability of the multichannel 2D AR model. A model stabilization procedure based on numerical optimization techniques is proposed. The performance of the multichannel 2D AR model has been evaluated based on the synthetic data generated using two different channel simulators.
Inverse problem for tripotential measures in the study of buried cavities
1996
This paper presents a solution to the inverse electrical problem for the interpretation of apparent resistivity anomalies due to empty buried cavities of quasi-spherical shape when tripotential measures are carried out. The anomalies of the apparent resistivities ra,rb andrg, and the composed resistivitiesrmand rt were previously calculated for a sufficient class of spherical models of resistivity anomalies. Then, for the whole class of models, some functionals of spatial distribution of the apparent and composed resistivity were identified and analyzed. They represent the average characteristics of the anomalies and, depending in a simple way on the fundamental parameters of the sources of …
Synthesis of aryl azides: A probe reaction to study the synergetic action of ultrasounds and ionic liquids
2011
Abstract The combined effect of ultrasounds and ionic liquids was used to perform the synthesis of aryl azides by nucleophilic aromatic substitution in ionic liquid/[1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium][N 3 ] binary mixtures. The ultrasounds efficiency was analyzed as a function of the substrate and of the ionic liquid structure. In the first case, both 6π and 10π electrons aryl halides were considered. As far as the ionic liquid structure is concerned, both aromatic and aliphatic ionic liquids were taken into account. Among aromatic cations, the effects due to different ability in giving hydrogen bond or π–π interactions were considered. The use of a geminal ionic liquid having an aromatic spacer …
