Chemistry of pheromonal and defensive secretions in the nymphs and the adults ofDysdercus cingulatus Fabr. (Heteroptera, Pyrrhocoridae)

59 ref.; International audience; The exocrine secretions from the nymphs and the adults of both sexes in D. cingulatus were chemically investigated. Seven compounds were identified in the anterior glands, and eleven in the median dorsoabdominal glands of nymphs and adults of both sexes. Fifty-five compounds were identified in the defensive glands (34 in posterior dorsoabdominal glands ofnymphs and 21 in metathoracic glands of adults), and six in the sternal glandular epithelium of the males. The biological function of the glandular secretions and of their identified compounds were investigated and are discussed.

Observations on ant-plant interactions in Pachycentria and other genera of the Dissochaeteae (Melastomataceae) in Sabah and Sarawak

Summary In Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysia) ant-plant interactions of Dissochaeteae were studied in the field. Whereas some species of Dissochaeteae show only loose and fortuitous interactions with ants as the result of the provision of pearl bodies and nesting places which are used by ants facultatively, Pachycentria constricta and P. glauca show a complex relationship with ants mediated by other ant plants. Dinosaurian survivorship schedules revisited: new insights from an age‐structured population model

Little is known of dinosaur population biology due to insufficient information on age‐dependent fecundities and mortalities. So far, survivorship curves (SC) of only six dinosaurs (four tyrannosaurs, one ceratopsian, one hadrosaur) have been erected from bone assemblages of aged specimens. They indicate high survival throughout most of their life with presumably higher mortalities after hatching and increasing mortalities towards its end. Evolution of ammonoid morphospace during the Early Jurassic radiation

The morphologic radiation of Early Jurassic ammonites following the near extinction at the end of the Triassic is analyzed from 436 species of 156 genera that form a representative sample of morphs occurring worldwide in the first three stages of the Jurassic (Hettangian, Sinemurian, Pliensbachian: 36 subzones, 24 m.y.). Morphologic diversity is analyzed independently of taxonomy by processing 18 shape parameters using multivariate analysis and clustering techniques. Structural analysis of extensional faults in the Mâconnais Hills shows that low-intensity extensional phenomena occurred back from the passive margin of the Ligurian Tethys, the axis of which lay some 400 km southeast of the study area in Mid-Jurassic times. Storm-induced rip current directions and coral lens positions suggest that the palaeotopography was maintained by early faulting.

Evolution to the extreme: origins of the highly modified apical system in pourtalesiid echinoids

The apical system of the genus Pourtalesia displays a plate architecture that falls so far outside that typical of other echinoids that plate homologies remain problematic. A new approach using the Extraxial–Axial Theory (EAT) that develops homologies for the Echinodermata is proposed. The exploration of apical plate patterns throughout ontogenetic sequences shows that the typical holasteroid pattern found in the youngest specimens undergoes a series of disturbances that result in a multiple disjunction accompanied by isolation or disappearance of certain genital plates.
