We have obtained a molecular phylogeny of the subfamily Aphidiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) by sequencing the 18S rDNA in 37 aphidiine taxa. Approximately 1857 nucleotides were sequenced in each species. Evolutionary relationships were established by comparing the results of maximum-parsimony, maximum-likelihood, and distance analyses. The most variable region of this gene, V4 (approx 403 nucleotides), was employed to establish the basality of the tribe Ephedrini within this subfamily. Abstract Sesuvioideae (Aizoaceae) form a small subfamily of drought-tolerant plants exhibiting leaf succulence, halophytic ecology, and the C4 photosynthetic pathway. Sesuvioideae are sister to the species-rich subfamilies Ruschioideae, Mesembryanthemoideae and Aizooideae that contain many CAM lineages. This close relationship of CAM and C4 taxa identifies the Sesuvioideae as an important clade to address hypotheses of photosynthetic pathway evolution. Mitochondrial 12S and 16S rDNA sequences of five species of Dinidoridae Stål, 1868, a largely Paleotropical family, and 16 other shield bugs (Pentatomoidea) were studied. This was the first molecular examination of the systematic position of this family within the superfamily Pentatomoidea using more than a single dinidorid species. Phylogenetic trees obtained from the Bayesian inference of 12S and 16S sequences of these mitochondrial DNA, identified Dinidoridae as the monophylum and a sister group to the Tessaratomidae. A revision of the Anacharitinae material from Australia and New Zealand deposited in the Natural History Museum of London and material from Papua New Guinea deposited in the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle of Paris was conducted. The ranges of the previously known described Anacharis zealandica Ashmead and Xyalaspis victoriensis New are expanded. A new Australasian species of Anacharis Dalman, Anacharis tasmaniae sp. nov., is described, and the genus Aegilips Haliday is cited for the first time in the region, with the description of Aegilips papuensis sp. nov. The biology and distribution patterns of Australa- sian anacharitines are discussed.

We took advantage of the massive amount of sequence information generated by the Caenorhabditis elegans genome project to perform a comprehensive analysis of a group of over 100 related sequences that has allowed us to describe two new C. elegans non-LTR retrotransposons. We named them Sam and Frodo. We also determined that several highly divergent subfamilies of both elements exist in C. elegans. It is likely that several master copies have been active at the same time in C. elegans, although only a few copies of both Sam and Frodo have characteristics that are compatible with them being active today. Protein kinases C (PKCs) comprise closely related Ser/Thr kinases, ubiquitously present in animal tissues ; they respond to second messengers, e.g., Ca2+ and/or diacylglycerol, to express their activities. Two PKCs have been sequenced from Geodia cydonium, a member of the lowest multicellular animals, the sponges (Porifera). One sponge G. cydonium PKC, GCPKC1, belongs to the ''novel'' (Ca2+-independent) PKC (nPKC) subfamily while the second one, GCPKC2, has the hall-marks of the ''conventional'' (Ca2+-dependent) PKC (cPKC) subfamily. Diagnoses of the genus and included species I. blantoni Carvalho and Sailer and I. penicillus, n. sp., are given; a color adult habitus photo of both Isometocoris species, male genitalic drawings of Isometocoris penicillus n. sp., and scanning electron micrographs of selected structures of I. blantoni are provided; and an identification key is given to help distinguish the two included species. Ochetostethomorpha secunda sp. nov. from Namibia, the second species of the South African endemic genus is described, illustrated, and compared with O. nollothensis Schumacher, 1913. The new species is the third of the subfamily Sehirinae known from Namibia. Moreover, a DNA barcode sequence was generated for this new species (827 bp of cytochrome oxidase I) and was deposited in GenBank.

Two new species are described: Acanthaegilopsis hemicoriaceus Mata-Casanova & Pujade-Villar sp. n. and Xyalaspis subsaharica Mata-Casanova & Pujade-Villar sp. n. Diagnostic characters are illustrated and data about biology, distribution and morphological variability are discussed.
