Are There Essentially Incomplete Knowledge Representation Systems?

A mathematical model of a knowledge representation system (KR-system) is proposed. Its prototype is the concept of an information system in the sense of Z. Pawlak; however, the model is, in fact, a substantial extension of the latter. In our model, attributes may form an arbitrary category, where morphisms represent built-in functional dependencies, and uncertainty of knowledge is treated in terms of category theory via monads. Several notions of simulation are also considered for such KR-systems. In this general setting, the semiphilosophical problem mentioned in the title, still open, is given a precise meaning.
Modelling systemic price cojumps with Hawkes factor models

Instabilities in the price dynamics of a large number of financial assets are a clear sign of systemic events. By investigating a set of 20 high cap stocks traded at the Italian Stock Exchange, we find that there is a large number of high frequency cojumps. We show that the dynamics of these jumps is described neither by a multivariate Poisson nor by a multivariate Hawkes model. We introduce a Hawkes one factor model which is able to capture simultaneously the time clustering of jumps and the high synchronization of jumps across assets.

Abstract Altered expression of matricellular proteins can become pathogenic in the presence of persistent perturbations in tissue homeostasis. Here, we show that autoimmunity associated with Fas mutation was exacerbated and transitioned to lymphomagenesis in the absence of SPARC (secreted protein acidic rich in cysteine). The absence of SPARC resulted in defective collagen assembly, with uneven compartmentalization of lymphoid and myeloid populations within secondary lymphoid organs (SLO), and faulty delivery of inhibitory signals from the extracellular matrix. Background Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) affects some patients on dialysis after gadolinium contrast agent–enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. It is characterized by progressive skin fibrosis of the extremities, sometimes including the trunk and internal organs. This article reviews the principles of systemic cancer treatment in older individuals. These include: assessment of physiologic age with a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA), adjustment of chemotherapy doses to the patient's renal function, and prevention of myelotoxicity with hemopoietic growth factors. Other complications that become more common with age include mucositis, peripheral neuropathy and cardiomyopathy. Two chronic complications of chemotherapy become more common with age, including myelodysplasia and chronic cardiomyopathy.
