A New Multicast Technique for Video Transmission over ABR Services in ATM Networks

2000

Multicast techniques are the only way to simultaneously provide flows of information from one source to several destinations. The intention of this paper is to study and to evaluate different multicast techniques using a video coder based on an adaptive video compression algorithm with subband coding and a best effort network service like ATM with the Available Bit Rate (ABR) service. This video transmission can adapt faster and easily to changing network conditions. In this way, we present an evaluation process for a determined network configuration. Thereafter we discuss the results obtained by simulation and propose for this video transmission a trade-off between these multicast techniqu…

An RFID framework for multimodal service provision

2009

In recent years there has been a growing interest toward the development of pervasive and context-aware services, and RFID technology played a relevant role in the context sensing task. We propose the use of RFID technology together with a conversational agent in order to implement a multimodal information retrieval service we call SensorMesh. The information acquired from RFID tags about the nearest point of interest is processed by the conversational agent that carries a more natural interaction with the user, also exploiting a common sense ontology. The service is accessible using a multimodal browser on Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs); the browser allows the user to interact with the…

A Data-Driven Architecture for Personalized QoE Management in 5G Wireless Networks

2017

With the emergence of a variety of new wireless network types, business types, and QoS in a more autonomic, diverse, and interactive manner, it is envisioned that a new era of personalized services has arrived, which emphasizes users' requirements and service experiences. As a result, users' QoE will become one of the key features in 5G/future networks. In this article, we first review the state of the art of QoE research from several perspectives, including definition, influencing factors, assessment methods, QoE models, and control methods. Then a data-driven architecture for enhancing personalized QoE is proposed for 5G networks. Under this architecture, we specifically propose a two-ste…

An interest-aware video streaming platform: Shaping its architecture to better suit users' demands

2014

This paper investigates how a p2p television platform can take advantage of the presence of frequent channel viewers to grant them a more satisfying service than to less regular spectators. The idea we explore is to learn beforehand about the users’ interests, in order to cluster them in groups that display different behaviors; then, the video chunk scheduling algorithm of the p2p overlay is altered, with the aim of serving frequent spectators in a privileged manner, providing them with a faster access to the selected channel. An analytical model is developed, to capture the difference in startup delay that the proposed changes introduce; several additional performance metrics are numerical…

A Multimodal Guide for the Augmented Campus

2007

The use of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) with ad-hoc built-in information retrieval and auto-localization functionalities can help people navigating an environment in a more natural manner compared to traditional audio/visual pre-recorded guides. In this work we propose and discuss a user-friendly, multi-modal guide system for pervasive context-aware service provision within augmented environments. The proposed system is adaptable to the user needs of mobility within a given environment; it is usable on different mobile devices and in particular on PDAs, which are used as advanced adaptive HEI (human-environment interaction) interfaces. An information retrieval service is provided that…

Electrical Safety of Resonant Grounding

2019

The resonant grounding is one of the possible methods of system neutral grounding for the medium-voltage distribution. IEEE standards do define this grounding configuration, but important advantages and drawbacks of the resonant grounding might not be fully known, due to its rather uncommon application in North America. On the other hand, resonant grounding in Europe is imposed by the increased requirements for power quality, especially for medium-voltage industrial users, and imposed to electric utilities by Regulatory Authorities, with the purpose to protect the interests of users and consumers. Level of the continuity of the service, magnitude and phase of ground-fault currents, magnitud…

Performance evaluation of differentiated access mechanisms effectiveness in 802.11 networks

2005

The IEEE 802.11e draft specification aims to extend the original 802.11 MAC protocol by introducing priority mechanisms able to manage bandwidth and resource allocation according to the QoS needs of real-time applications. Different strategies based on MAC parameter diversifications, such as contention window limits, contention window updating factor and silence monitoring time, can be pursued in order to provide service differentiation, also in the case of distributed access. In this paper, we investigate on the behaviour of each differentiation possibility under different load conditions and traffic requirements. Our results show that the most powerful mechanisms which provide service dif…

A speech recognition approach for an industrial training station

2021

This paper presents a speech recognition service used in the context of commanding and guiding the activities around an industrial training station. The entire concept is built on a decentralized microservice architecture and one of the many hardware and software components is the speech recognition engine. This engine grants users the possibility to interact seamlessly with other components in order to ensure a gradual and productive learning process. By working with different API’s for both English and Romanian languages, the presented approach manages to obtain good speech recognition for defining task phrases aiding the training procedure and to reduce the recognition required time by a…

Activity typologies as a design model for the ubiquitous detection of daily routines

2018

Emerging technologies open up new visions and business potential for systems design and development in the areas of wellbeing and health. New technologies enable the detection of human performance and early changes in physical and cognitive functioning, making it possible to monitor an older person’s wellbeing. This kind of technology or service sets significant requirements for design, as design concepts must be able to capture the complexity of people’s daily lives in terms of activities and environments. Technology itself is “blind” unless designers can adapt it to human life. There is thus a distinct need for comprehensive design and development models that generate adequate human requi…

Cloud Based Business Processes Orchestration

2014

Abstract As the value concept of the cloud is evolving from a cost-saving mechanism into a growth instrument, more and more organizations are turning to the cloud in an attempt to redesign their core business processes. The opportunity for process innovation is vast, and it will take the disciplined approach of BPM, with the computing understanding and accessibility of the cloud, to make the most of what lies ahead. With the popularity of cloud computing, Platform-as-a Service (PaaS) becomes one of the core technical enablers of enterprises to change the delivery of services to both customers and internal organizations. An application in an enterprise needs to take into account various spec…
