STRUCTURAL INSTABILITY IN FERROELECTRICS: SUPERIMPOSING HAMILTONIAN AND STOCHASTIC DYNAMICS

2008

ABSTRACT Structural instability of ferroelectrics distinguished by appearance of coexisting phases and spatial inhomogeneity is at variance with the predictions of statistics in the canonical ensemble. A more refined description includes ergodicity breaking which become apparent at critical temperature when the system resides in metastable state and its development lead to one of possible minimum energy states. In this study the domain growth and switching is reproduced within the framework of Fokker-Planck approach. The mathematical technique is developed for empiric Landau Hamiltonians and improved for application to first principles effective Hamiltonians with supercells and elementary l…

Rich dynamics and anticontrol of extinction in a prey-predator system

2019

This paper reveals some new and rich dynamics of a two-dimensional prey-predator system and to anticontrol the extinction of one of the species. For a particular value of the bifurcation parameter, one of the system variable dynamics is going to extinct, while another remains chaotic. To prevent the extinction, a simple anticontrol algorithm is applied so that the system orbits can escape from the vanishing trap. As the bifurcation parameter increases, the system presents quasiperiodic, stable, chaotic and also hyperchaotic orbits. Some of the chaotic attractors are Kaplan-Yorke type, in the sense that the sum of its Lyapunov exponents is positive. Also, atypically for undriven discrete sys…

Dissipative soliton interactions inside a fiber laser cavity

2005

We report our recent numerical and experimental observations of dissipative soliton interactions inside a fiber laser cavity. A bound state, formed from two pulses, may have a group velocity which differs from that of a single soliton. As a result, they can collide inside the cavity. This results in a variety of outcomes. Numerical simulations are based either on a continuous model or on a parameter-managed model of the cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation. Each of the models provides explanations for our experimental observations. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Modulational Instability and Stimulated Raman Scattering in Normally Dispersive Highly Birefringent Fibers

2001

Abstract The nonlinear interaction of two laser beams in normally dispersive highly birefringent optical fibers leads to a large set of fascinating physical effects such as modulational instability (MI) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). These two nonlinear phenomena have a positive role as a mechanism for the generation of short optical pulses and represent a drawback in fiber-optics transmissions. Indeed, we will show that an induced process of modulational instability may be exploited for the generation of THz train of vector dark solitons. The technique of frequency-resolved optical gating is used to completely characterize the intensity and phase of the dark soliton trains. On the …

STOCHASTIC ANALYSIS OF ONE-DIMENSIONAL HETEROGENEOUS SOLIDS WITH LONG-RANGE INTERACTIONS

2011

Random mass distribution in one-dimensional (1D) elastic solids in the presence of long-range interactions is studied in this paper. Besides the local Cauchy contact forces among adjacent elements, long-range forces depending on the product of interacting masses, as well as on their relative displacements, are considered. In this context, the random fluctuations of the mass distribution involve a stochastic model of the nonlocal interactions, and the random displacement field of the body is provided as the solution of a stochastic integro-differential equation. The presence of the random field of mass distribution is reflected in the random kernel of the solving integro-differential equatio…

JEM-X: three years in space

2006

We report on the technical and scientific performance of JEM-X, the X-ray monitor on ESA's INTEGRAL mission. INTEGRAL has now been in orbit for more than three years, and the mission is foreseen to be extended until the end of 2010. Overall, JEM-X performs very well, and can be expected to continue to do so for the duration of the mission. We discuss in some detail the operational experiences and the problems encountered with the microstrip detectors caused by the space environment and give one example of the interesting scientific results obtained. The analysis software is still being improved on, and we discuss briefly the significance of these improvements.

2015

Advanced Astronomy for Heliophysics Plus (ADAHELI+) is a project concept for a small solar and space weather mission with a budget compatible with an European Space Agency (ESA) S-class mission, including launch, and a fast development cycle. ADAHELI+ was submitted to the European Space Agency by a European-wide consortium of solar physics research institutes in response to the "Call for a small mission opportunity for a launch in 2017," of March 9, 2012. The ADAHELI+ project builds on the heritage of the former ADAHELI mission, which had successfully completed its phase-A study under the Italian Space Agency 2007 Small Mission Programme, thus proving the soundness and feasibility of its in…

Manipulating dissipative soliton ensembles in passively mode-locked fiber lasers

2014

International audience; We review our recent experimental and theoretical results addressing the dynamics of large numbers of solitons interacting in presence of a background in passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber lasers. We first characterize experimentally the soliton rain complex dynamics, and then we focus on ordered soliton patterns. We report that, for suitable experimental parameters, a continuous wave can impose harmonic mode locking. Two levels of modeling for a mode-locked laser subjected to the external injection of a continuous wave are developed to support the latter observation. The first one is based on a scalar master equation, while the second one takes into account th…
