A Numerical Method for an Inverse Problem Arising in Two-Phase Fluid Flow Transport Through a Homogeneous Porous Medium
2019
In this paper we study the inverse problem arising in the model describing the transport of two-phase flow in porous media. We consider some physical assumptions so that the mathematical model (direct problem) is an initial boundary value problem for a parabolic degenerate equation. In the inverse problem we want to determine the coefficients (flux and diffusion functions) of the equation from a set of experimental data for the recovery response. We formulate the inverse problem as a minimization of a suitable cost function and we derive its numerical gradient by means of the sensitivity equation method. We start with the discrete formulation and, assuming that the direct problem is discret…
A linear approach for the nonlinear distributed parameter identification problem
1991
In identifying the nonlinear distributed parameters we propose an approach, which enables us to identify the nonlinear distributed parameters by just solving linear problems. In this approach we just need to identify linear parameters and then recover the nonlinear parameters from the identified linear parameters. An error estimate for the finite element approximation is derived. Numerical tests are also presented.
On thermo-mechanical issues induced by irradiation swelling inside the back-plate of the IFMIF target assembly
2011
Abstract Within the framework of the IFMIF R&D program and in close cooperation with ENEA-Brasimone, at the Department of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Palermo a research campaign has been launched to investigate the thermo-mechanical issues potentially induced by irradiation swelling in the threaded connections between frame and back-plate of IFMIF target assembly. The main aim of the research campaign has relied in the assessment of the maximum swelling-induced volumetric strain that may be accepted in order to allow screws to withstand thermo-mechanical stresses and work in safe conditions or to avoid unduly high unscrewing torques during back-plate remotely handled maintenanc…
A solution process for simulation-based multiobjective design optimization with an application in the paper industry
2014
In this paper, we address some computational challenges arising in complex simulation-based design optimization problems. High computational cost, black-box formulation and stochasticity are some of the challenges related to optimization of design problems involving the simulation of complex mathematical models. Solving becomes even more challenging in case of multiple conflicting objectives that must be optimized simultaneously. In such cases, application of multiobjective optimization methods is necessary in order to gain an understanding of which design offers the best possible trade-off. We apply a three-stage solution process to meet the challenges mentioned above. As our case study, w…
On superconvergence techniques
1987
A brief survey with a bibliography of superconvergence phenomena in finding a numerical solution of differential and integral equations is presented. A particular emphasis is laid on superconvergent schemes for elliptic problems in the plane employing the finite element method.
An Automatic Differentiation Based Approach to the Level Set Method
2015
This paper discusses an implementation of the parametric level set method. Adjoint approach is used to perform the sensitivity analysis, but contrary to standard implementations, the state problem is differentiated in its discretized form. The required partial derivatives are computed using tools of automatic differentiation, which avoids the need to derive the adjoint problem from the governing partial differential equation. The augmented Lagrangian approach is used to enforce volume constraints, and a gradient based optimization method is used to solve the subproblems. Applicability of the method is demonstrated by repeating well known compliance minimization studies of a cantilever beam …
Strain gradient elasticity within the symmetric BEM formulation
2014
The symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method is used to address a class of strain gradient elastic materials featured by a free energy function of the (classical) strain and of its (first) gradient. With respect to the classical elasticity, additional response variables intervene, such as the normal derivative of the displacements on the boundary, and the work-coniugate double tractions. The fundamental solutions - featuring a fourth order partial differential equations (PDEs) system - exhibit singularities which in 2D may be of the order 1/ r 4 . New techniques are developed, which allow the elimination of most of the latter singularities. The present paper has to be intended as a resear…
Efficiency of Multisensoric Therapy in Autism Spectrum Disorder Patients
2018
Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the role of various treatment methods for children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). The prospective study was conducted in 2013–2015 at the Children’s University Hospital and Social Pediatric Centre of the University of Latvia. The data analysis included 72 children (2 to 5 year old) with ASD, of whom 38 had infantile autism, 16 had atypical autism, and 18 had other diffuse developmental disorder). 86.1% patients received therapy. The most common treatment was by Montessori method and special pedagogue. Other treatments were dance-movement therapy, animal, sand and one patient received spa treatments. Univariate OR analysis showed tha…
Subsurface treatment of a contact subjected to a hertz pressure
2013
Abstract The study proposes an approach allowing the favorable modification of the stresses field of a structure subjected to a Hertzian contact. It is based on the study of a classic Hertzian contact in the presence of subsurface circular defects. The idea is to limit the field of tangential stresses without large increasing of the global stress (Von Mises) of the system. The location of the defects is made according to the mechanical parameters of the contact (Fn, has, z). The results of the numerical calculations (FEM) are compared with photoelastic measurements and highlight an excellent correlation. The location of the defect on the symmetry axis (x=0) is the dominating parameter for t…
Numerical simulations and experimental measurements of the stress intensity factor in perforated plates
2008
A numerical procedure, which combines two hybrid finite element formulations, was developed to analyse the stress intensity factors in cracked perforated plates with a periodic distribution of holes and square representative volume elements. The accuracy of the method in predicting the stress intensity factor was verified by a comparison with experimental measurements, carried out by a photoelasticity method, and by commercial finite element software. Several simulations were executed by varying both the crack length and the hole diameters, and the effects of the holes on the stress intensity factor are illustrated. The method shows high accuracy and efficiency, as small differences were ob…
