Toisen kielen kehityksen tasoja on tutkittu jo vuosikymmenien ajan ja kysymyslauseet ovat olleet yksi alan keskeisimpiä tutkimuskohteita. In research on learner language complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF), syntactic complexity is often studied with quantitative measures based on words, clauses, sentences, and T-units. The findings have been mixed, but segmenting learner language into these units of measure has seldom been problematised, even if the need for accurate coding is well known. Guiding and assessing development of L2 writing process : the role of peer collaboration

This study, informed by Vygotskian notion of mediation and reporting on a partnership between a researcher (the first author) and a teacher (the second author), aims at exploring how peers’ comments can inform teacher assessment and guidance of learners’ L2 (second/foreign language) writing. The participants were 19 L2 English learners in an upper secondary school in Finland. We largely focus on the notes that one pair of learners made on each other’s essays and how they responded to peer assistance. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan suomenoppijoiden mielipiteenilmauksia ja niiden kehittymistä sinä aikana kun oppijoiden kielenkäyttäjän rooli vaihtuu vieraan kielen oppijasta toisen kielen oppijaksi. Mielipiteenilmauksia ei ole tutkittu kovin paljoa, eikä suomi toisena kielenä -oppijoiden kirjoitetussa kielessä lainkaan. Myöskään tapoja ilmaista mielipidettä suomen kielellä ei ole kartoitettu. The present dissertation focuses on the fluency of second and foreign language (L2). Second and foreign language use is often assessed by its fluency. However, the connections between language proficiency and fluency are far from clear. The fluency reasearch has tried to establish these connections, but results are varied. In the current thesis, this question is explored within the theoretical framework of Norman Segalowitz’s division of three types of fluency: cognitive, utterance, and perceived fluency. Influencing through language : university students' argumentation strategies

This article investigates university students’ argumentation skills in their efforts to infl uence fellow students through language. The project was implemented at the University of Kuopio and the subjects, both Finnish and foreign university students, spoke English as a lingua franca. The students were required to argue in roles either ‘for’ or ‘against’ in videotaped debates. The aim was to determine how well they managed and what problems arose. In this demanding speech situation the students applied collaborative strategy, repetition, rephrasing and topic negotiation.
