Web 2.0 and the collective intelligence

2008

In this paper, I describe a new form of collective intelligence (CI) on the Internet. It is project-like self-organization of masses of ordinary people on the Internet. These crowds emerge, define the collective problem or task by themselves, solve it, and vanish as entities. I have coined this phenomena to netcrowd ('verkkovoima' in Finnish). I compare netcrowd to other forms of CI and suggest a typology for CI types.

Crowdsourcing Fundamentals: Definition and Typology

2015

Crowdsourcing is a problem-solving and task realization model that is being increasingly used. Thanks to the possibility of harnessing the collective intelligence from the Internet; thanks to the crowdsourcing initiatives people can, for example, find a solution to a complex chemical problem, get images tagged, or get a logo designed. Due to its success and usefulness, more and more researchers have focused their interest on this concept. This fact has shown that the concept of crowdsourcing has no clear boundaries, and although over time the concept has been better explained, some authors describe it differently, propose different types of crowdsourcing initiatives, or even use contradicto…

Washback factors and inference predictors in the Spanish University Examination: The OPENPAU Project (FFI2011-22442)

2012

Background: University Entrance Examinations provide information the student?s opportunities to succeed in their academic university career. However, the current foreign language paper of the Spanish University Entrance Examination does no permit to obtain enough evidence to make academic inferences. Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study was to determine if the new test would serve for these objectives according to the students? needs and expected use of the language. Sources of Evidence: Based on Chapelle (2007) and García Laborda (2010). Analysis and results: Primary findings indicate that the test requires a deep revision in the test items, task typology and, overall, the test defi…

Identifying the Optimum Social Site that Could Serve eLearning Purposes: A Preliminary Analysis

2020

Nowadays, an increasingly attractive research domain is represented by the integration of eLearning systems with the Social Media tools. However, identifying the proper Social Media platform to serve educational purposes could be an extremely hard task, mainly due to the variations from platform to platform. Thus, the first aim of this article is to identify the optimum typology that could be successfully integrated with eLearning systems. Moving forward, a classification of the top 20 most popular Social Media sites at global level in terms of their main objectives will be required in order to asses a specific typology of each of this. Thereafter, we propose a preliminary model of comparis…

A case study of a precision fertilizer application task generation for wheat based on classified hyperspectral data from UAV combined with farm histo…

2013

Different remote sensing methods for detecting variations in agricultural fields have been studied in last two decades. There are already existing systems for planning and applying e.g. nitrogen fertilizers to the cereal crop fields. However, there are disadvantages such as high costs, adaptability, reliability, resolution aspects and final products dissemination. With an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based airborne methods, data collection can be performed cost-efficiently with desired spatial and temporal resolutions, below clouds and under diverse weather conditions. A new Fabry-Perot interferometer based hyperspectral imaging technology implemented in an UAV has been introduced. In this…

Vagueness expressions in Italian, Spanish and English task-oriented dialogues

2017

In this article, we present a corpus-based analysis on the use of Vagueness Expressions (VEs) in Italian, Spanish and English in Task-oriented Dialogues. Following the distinction among informational, relational and discourse vagueness (Voghera 2012), we compare the width of the functional space of the most frequent VEs. In particular we investigate whether and to what extent the VEs cover all the types of vagueness in the three languages. Quantitative and qualitative analysis brings evidence about a high convergence in the vagueness functions expressed by the VEs of the three languages.

Efficacy of augmented reality versus conventional physical therapy for the improvement of balance, gait, upper-limb and dual task in people with mult…

2022

Polyhedrality and decomposition

2018

Abstract The aim of this note is to present two results that make the task of finding equivalent polyhedral norms on certain Banach spaces, having either a Schauder basis or an uncountable unconditional basis, easier and more transparent. The hypotheses of both results are based on decomposing the unit sphere of a Banach space into countably many pieces, such that each one satisfies certain properties. Some examples of spaces having equivalent polyhedral norms are given.

Modālo darbības vārdu mācīšana skolā: mācību grāmatu analīze

2019

Mūsdienās modālie darbības vārdi tiek uzskatīti par vienu no būtiskākajiem elementiem angļu valodā, bet daudziem, īpaši uzdevumu ziņā, tie ir mulsinoši. Šī darba mērķis ir analizēt modālo darbības vārdu saistītas uzdevumu veidus skolas mācību grāmatās, veicot uzdevumu novērtēšanu. Šajā pētījumā izmantota metode ir piecu līmeņu kursu grāmatu sērijas satura analīze - New Opportunities: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate and Upper-intermediate. Rezultāti ir parādījuši, ka katrs uzdevums var tikt iedalīts kognitīvajās, starppersonu, lingvistiskās, emocionālajās un radošajās grupās, pamatojoties uz Nunana (2004) uzdevumu veida klasifikāciju. Tadējādi, visbiežāk sastopamie uzdev…

Komunikatīvo uzdevumu izmantošana modālo darbības vārdu mācīšanā augstskolā

2016

Angļu valodas modālie darbības vārdi studentiem rada ievērojamas grūtības to gramatiskās un funkcionālās dažādības dēļ. Pētnieki un metodiķi uzsver uz konteksta bāzes veidotu komunikatīvo uzdevumu pielietojuma nozīmīgumu efektīvākai gramatisko formu, īpaši modālo darbības vārdu, apguvei un nostiprināšanai. Maģistra darba mērķis bija izpētīt komunikatīvo uzdevumu ietekmi modālo darbības vārdu apguvē un to pielietojumā reālās situācijās.
